.SYNOPSIS...
A late season winter storm will bring an accumulating snowfall to
the region tonight into Tuesday with most areas picking up one to
three inches of accumulation, mainly on grassy and elevated
surfaces. More significant accumulations will be found across some
of the higher terrain of the Southern Tier and particularly east of
Lake Ontario. Warmer weather returns mid week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY/...
...Winter Weather Headlines In Effect for Parts of the Region...

The focus for this period will be on the out of season winter
storm lasting into Tuesday morning. Weak surface low currently
over the lower Ohio Valley. Clouds and precipitation spreading
rapidly into the region from the southwest ahead of the low.
Regional radars and observations indicating that precipitation
has already reached southwest portions of the area which is
in fairly good agreement with lastest hi-res simulated
reflectivity. Precipitation for the most part is rain, with a
mix or change to wet snow across interior and higher elevation
areas.

The mid level low associated with this system closes off over the
Great Lakes into the evening, with decent the better frontogentic
forcing line up across far portions of the area with some
indication of banding developing later tonight into early Tuesday
morning roughly along the I-81 corridor. Snowfall rates in excess of
1 inch per hour are possible in this area, mainly impacting the Tug
Hill Plateau and western Adirondacks, although while the highest
snowfall totals by Tuesday morning will focus across the higher
terrain, even lower elevations will be able accumulate snow.

The low propagates north of the region late tonight into early
Tuesday morning with the steady snow taper off over far western
New York. Cold air advection eventually takes hold with wrap
around precipitation and some lake enhanced/upslope snow
developing Tuesday. Additional accumulation for lower elevations
looks minimal due to diurnal effects, but higher elevations
could see an additional accumulation of a few inches of wet
snow.

&&

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
A progressive upper level ridge shifts into the Great Lakes region
Tuesday night, with expansive surface high pressure building over
the Mid-Atlantic. Snow and rain showers will come to an end from
west to east as skies clear across the area overnight, with maybe
just a few lingering light snow showers east of Lake Ontario by
daybreak Wednesday. Fair and dry weather can then be expected
through the day, with temperatures beginning their climb into warmer
territory through the long term. Highs on Wednesday will generally
top out in the low to mid 50s across the lower terrain, with upper
40s up on the higher terrain.

Cloud cover will begin rolling back in from the west late Wednesday
evening as a mid level trough advances through the Great Lakes
region. A warm front extending from the associated surface low will
bring chances for rain for areas generally west of the Genesee
Valley after midnight. With extra insolation and warm air advection
courtesy of the approaching front, lows will range from the mid 40s
across far western NY to the upper 20s east of Lake Ontario where
skies will remain clearer overnight.

The main surface low will weaken as it runs up against the offshore
ridge and takes a northeastward turn over James Bay on Thursday. In
terms of sensible weather, showers will spread eastward across the
area through the morning as the warm front traverses the lower Great
Lakes, with lower chances for showers for far eastern portions of
the area. Showers quickly come to an end from west to east Thursday
evening as a moisture starved lagging cold front quickly swings
through in the wake of the warm front. High temperatures Thursday
will be in the upper 50s and low 60s, some 10 degrees warmer than
those found on Wednesday.

&&

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
A stout upper level ridge of high pressure will begin to build
across eastern CONUS moving into Friday, with an omega block pattern
by next Sunday. This will bring day to day warming, with
temperatures into the 70s by early next week.

Friday will remain dry with high pressure across the region. There
will then be chances for rain showers Friday Night and into Saturday
as a warm front passes through. There are some suggestions that this
warm front could stall near the North Country Sunday, under the
western influences of an upper level trough over Atlantic Canada.
This will bring uncertainty for how warm it will become Sunday, with
ensemble member support of both the ECMWF and GFS keeping the North
Country a bit cooler. For now will have widespread 70s across WNY,
with lower 60s east of Lake Ontario. If this warm front does push
through we likely will have widespread 70s, and perhaps a few 80s
for next Sunday.

.AVIATION /19Z MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Conditions will continue to deteriorate through this afternoon and
into early this evening as a swath of precipitation shifts
northeast across the area. A steady rain initially will change
quickly over to wet snow late in the afternoon and this evening
with IFR conditions developing during this time.

Widespread snow with IFR cigs can be expected tonight.

Outlook...

Tuesday...MVFR/IFR with rain and snow showers.
Wednesday...Mainly VFR.
Thursday...Restrictions likely with showers likely.
Friday and Saturday...Mainly VFR.

Southeast winds on Lake Erie this evening will become southwesterly
overnight while strengthening to an average of 20 knots. This will
likely lead to small craft advisory conditions after midnight while
persistent easterly winds will be found on Lake Ontario.

As a strong coastal low moves up the Hudson valley into New England
during the day Tuesday, fresh to strong westerlies will be found on
both Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. This will likely lead to an
additional issuance of small craft headlines.

High pressure will bring diminishing winds for mid week.

...Snow Spreads Across Southwest New York State...

This mid afternoon snow continues to expand northward across the
Southern Tier and into southern Erie county and Wyoming county.

This snow will lower visibility to a half mile or less at times.
Initially snow will melt on pavement, but as the sun lowers in the
sky later this afternoon and evening we will begin to see
accumulations on roads in addition to grassy and elevated surfaces.

Any snow covered road will contain slippery spots and if traveling
later this afternoon or tonight be sure to allow extra time to
reach your destination.

...Rain and Snow to Spread across the Lake Plain this Late
Afternoon...

A mixture of rain and snow is spreading across the Lake Plain as
we head into the late afternoon hours. As this area of
precipitation continues into the evening hours snow will become
the dominate precipitation type.

Though any snow is melting on road surfaces this afternoon, the
deeper into the evening we go there will be potential for snow to
accumulate on bridges, overpasses and higher terrain in the Finger
Lakes area.

Snow will reduce visibility to a half mile or less at times, and
if traveling this evening be sure to allow extra time to reach
your destination due to poor visibility, and later in the evening
possible slippery spots.
