.SYNOPSIS...
A storm system will bring widespread snow across the region tonight
and tomorrow, one that will mix with sleet and freezing rain south
of the Thruway. Behind this system lake effect snow will develop
southeast of the Lakes Friday Night, shifting to east of the Lakes
Saturday and Sunday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Surface high pressure centered over Northeastern Ontario will drift
east into Quebec Province today. On an northeasterly flow, light
snow showers and flurries will continue in a weakening state through
much of the day along the south shoreline of Lake Ontario...but
accumulations will be minimal. Maximum temperatures will range from
the low 20s across the North Country to the mid to upper 20s across
most of western NY, low to mid 30s across the western Southern Tier.

A shortwave trough will track across the Northern Plains and steer
surface low pressure along the Appalachians towards western NY
tonight. A secondary area of low pressure will develop off the Mid
Atlantic coast and eventually phase with the primary low off the
southern New England coast Friday afternoon. A dual jet structure
with enforce strong dynamics with deep layer ascent and moisture
advection across the Ohio Valley, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast tonight
through Friday. Widespread accumulating snow is expected with some
mixed precipitation across western NY tonight through Friday.

Beginning this afternoon, warm air advection will cause clouds to
increase from south to north across western and north central NY. A
strong surface high to the north will maintain a cold northerly feed
at the surface into tonight. As moisture increases, snow will move
into the western Southern Tier this evening and spread across
western NY through midnight. Easterly flow in the mid levels will
increase moisture while a low level jet noses into Pennsylvania.
Snow will spread into the North Country after midnight with snowfall
rates increasing across western NY as the surface low moves close to
the NY/PA border adjacent to the western Southern Tier. Warm air
will nose into the region and thermal profiles suggest snow changing
over to sleet across the Southern Tier into far southern Erie,
Wyoming and Livingston counties early Friday morning. Snow and sleet
will likely change to freezing rain for a short time across Allegany
county as the low tracks overhead towards Central NY by Friday
morning. Cold air advection will quickly cause any mixed
precipitation to change back over to snow Friday with snowfall rates
increasing across the Finger Lakes and North Country. Northerly
winds will increase Friday morning with gusts up to 35 mph south of
Lake Ontario.

By Friday afternoon, widespread snow will taper off from west to
east with heavy snow continuing across the Finger Lakes to North
Country. Northwest flow with 850mb temperatures falling to -14C will
introduce lake enhancement behind the departing system and snow
showers will continue east of Lake Erie while the synoptic snow is
ongoing east of Lake Ontario Friday afternoon.

Snow accumulations will average 4 to 8 in across western NY with
lower amounts across the western Southern Tier as they mix with
sleet and freezing rain Friday morning. Ice accumulations of up to a
tenth of an inch is expected for the Southern Tier. Higher snow
amounts expected to the east with 8 to 12 inches expected across the
North Country. There remains a small spread in the track of the
850mb and surface low as it tracks to the south and east. While most
of the region will be cold enough for snow, if a northern jog in the
track of the low occurs some sleet may mix in further north
across western NY including the Finger Lakes and reduce snowfall
amounts. Winter Headlines are in effect for the entire region
as listed below.

Temperatures will fall to the teens to low 20s across western NY to
the low teens across the North Country tonight. These minimum
temperatures will likely be reached the first part of the night
across the Southern Tier. High temperatures will reach the low 30s
across the southern Tier Friday morning. Elsewhere, temperatures
will rise to the mid to upper 20s by Friday afternoon.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
Cold advection on northwesterly flow starts the period out with lake
responses being the biggest player in the forecast. While inversion
heights are far from impressive, saturation within the dendritic
layer and unstable lapse rates are likely to allow for efficient ice
nucleation. This will result in decent coverage of snow showers to
the SE of both lakes on Friday night. Better fetch and more open
water over Lake Ontario will yield a better response there, however
there is ample open water on Lake Erie to allow for a response there
too. It seems model guidance is far overplaying ice cover on
Lake Erie and minimizing latent heat flux as well as moisture
flux off the lake as a result. As usual, only the Canadian model
really has any handle at all on this, and it was heavily leaned
upon for the forecast.

Flow turns from northwesterly to westerly and eventually WSW as cold
advection ebbs Saturday into Saturday night. This allows for
minimal lake response to continue in the form of very light
accumulating snow showers as lake bands lift northward and
become more disorganized. This results in further impetus for
lake responses to become less robust by Saturday night, as 850
hPa temperatures start to increase from -16C to around -10C,
reducing lake-induced instability, especially over Lake Erie, as
modest warm advection starts to take hold ahead of the next
system to affect the area in the long term forecast.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Heading into Sunday a large positively tilted trough will span
across much of the Contiguous United States, with its axis lying
from Quebec to New Mexico. Said upper level feature will support a
surface low and associated cold front over Quebec and Ontario
Canada. Meanwhile, a broad area of surface high pressure will lie to
the south of the CWA across the Ohio Valley. As the day progresses,
the trough aloft will sag southeast across the region, which in turn
will push the cold front across the region Sunday afternoon. Overall
this means the lingering lake effect northeast of the lakes Sunday
morning will get engulfed by the frontal passage Sunday afternoon.
Then despite the limited moisture associated with the front, a wind
shift to northwesterly flow and a drop in 850mb temperatures will
reinvigorate lake snows south/southeast of both lakes Sunday night.
Otherwise despite the lake snows, the other noteworthy impacts
Sunday night will be dropping temperatures aloft will support a
rather chilly night, and with the brisk winds, wind chills will drop
below zero for much of the CWA.

Upper level ridging Monday will introduce warmer, dry air and
subsidence into the region, thus a combination of these factors
will start to erode the lake effect south of the lakes.

Flow aloft turns more zonal Tuesday and supports a shortwave to pass
across the Great Lakes, which in turn will push a weak clipper
system across the region Tuesday night and bring back chances of
snow.

Cold air behind the clipper will support lake snows east of both
lakes Wednesday. Then as high pressure inserts more dominance across
the region Thursday expect lake snow to seize with a drier day on
tap.

.AVIATION /20Z THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
For the 18Z TAFS VFR flight conditions are predominate...with just a
few patches of MVFR and flurries along the southern Lake Ontario
shoreline.

A storm system will bring a period of snow across our region later
tonight and through Friday. This will lower flight conditions to IFR
or lower. Conditions will improve slowly across KBUF/KIAG after 15Z
and then later in the afternoon for KJHW/KROC/KART.

Sleet and perhaps freezing rain is likely for KJHW. There will
remain a low chance that sleet could reach as far north as KBUF and
KROC. Precipitation will remain all snow for KART.

As the surface low tracks across the Southern Tier tomorrow morning,
northeast winds tonight will quickly back around to northwest by
late tomorrow. Gusts behind the surface low to 25 knots tomorrow
will be possible.

Outlook...

Friday Night...Returning to VFR, though localized IFR in lake effect
snow showers to the southeast of the Lakes.

Saturday...Mainly VFR with localized IFR in lake effect snow showers
east of the lakes.

Sunday...MVFR/IFR flight conditions likely...within lake effect snow
to the northeast and east of the Lakes and then region wide with a
passing cold front.

Monday...A few lake effect snow showers southeast of Lake Ontario
early, otherwise mainly VFR.

Tuesday...Mainly VFR.

Gentle to moderate northeasterlies this morning will freshen late in
the day and tonight. Low pressure approaching from the Tennessee
Valley will pass by to the south and likely support another round of
marine headlines tonight through Friday. Widespread snow expected
with some sleet possible across Lake Erie Friday morning.

Winds weaken Friday night before southwest winds and waves ramp up
on Saturday.

Following latest RFC guidance warnings remain up for the Black
Creek at Churchville, Tonawanda Creek at Rapids and Oatka Creek
at Garbutt. Though the creek level at Rapids is falling at
