.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure weakens today with low pressure moving up the
eastern seaboard. Expect redeveloping rain across the area, but
not until late in the day over eastern MA, with periods of
heavy rain tonight and overnight. Behind the departing low,
Friday should feature mainly dry and mild weather. Trending
cooler over the weekend, especially Sunday. A disturbance will
bring a period of showers Sat morning, and a few showers are
also possible Sunday but not a washout. Mainly dry weather for
early to middle of next week, along with a warming trend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
410 AM Update:

While we are still dealing with distant/residual effects of a
coastal low well offshore, the main surface weather feature of
interest is a surface high pressure ridge extending from the ME/NH
seacoast SSW to the NYC metro area. This has brought considerable
clearing to most of Southern New England early this morning. The
exception is a return flow of stratus on the SE periphery of the
surface ridge in low-level east flow, which is seen on nighttime
microphysics satellite imagery from southern Worcester County
southeastward across much of RI and SE MA. Finally across most of
northern CT to the Berkshires, overcast skies continued, though a
band of rain showers seen on radar imagery was moving into the
Berkshires. It's definitely been a mishmash of conditions which
frankly have not been handled particularly well in forecast guidance
for what's otherwise a pretty synoptically salient pattern. That's
also reflected in current temps which range from the mid 30s across
the Merrimack Valley, the lower 40s across areas along and south of
the Mass Pike, to the upper 40s to near 50 across the Berks.

For today, expect the ridge to shift SE and allow for an
increasingly easterly onshore component. Other than a few light
showers across western MA early this morning, expect generally dry
weather today with rain seen across most of NY state moving more
north than east amid 500 mb height rises over New England. However
expect more clouds than sun when taken as as whole, tending to be
the lowest from a Westfield to Providence line on eastward to Cape
Cod. There may be some brief periods of sun early this morning
between filtered high clouds towards NE MA and the Boston area this
morning. But the overall message is for onshore breezes and more
clouds than sun. Daytime highs in the 40s to lower to mid 50s, but
calendar-day highs in several if not most locales occur tonight.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM FRIDAY/...
410 AM Update:

Tonight:

* Cold front brings heavy downpours tonight with embedded
  thunderstorms. Low prob of urban and poor drainage flooding.

* SE winds increase and become gusty tonight, especially RI and
  coastal eastern MA.

Strong 500 mb height falls take place tonight, while a surface cold
front trailing from NY into the mid-Altantic and a mesolow riding
along the boundary focus an area of heavy showers moving
northeastward. These rains are expected to be enhanced by a
strengthening SE low level jet of 65 kt that rides along the
coastline. This will set up a feed of Atlantic moisture resulting in
rising dewpoints and elevated PWAT values. Besides quite strong
moisture convergence and rising dewpoints overnight, rising mid-
level lapse rates associated with a surge of lower-level temps will
bring at least modest elevated instability values (MUCAPE around 100-
500 J/kg). This will support the potential for some embedded
thunderstorms, reflected in high HREF 1-hr probabilities of thunder
centered between 01-08z. Despite the strong winds, low level
profiles will be too stable to promote any strong to severe storms,
with the core of the instability found above a strong thermal
inversion around 800 mb. Expect at least a period of heavy rain
tonight into the overnight hours with the greatest chances for
thunder occurring across CT-RI into much of eastern MA. I did
include rain falling heavy at times wording in the zone forecast,
and if it falls in the wrong spot (urban areas, areas which don't
drain well) it could lead to localized street flooding. However we
can still take quite a bit of water and we're not expecting rainfall
totals to reach flash flood guidance. Thus it's best described as a
lower probability outcome, but it isn't a zero chance either.
Greatest rain totals are against the east slopes of the Berks and
into western Hartford County with amounts up to one and a half
inches there, with amounts between two thirds to an inch elsewhere
into central/eastern CT and MA as well as RI. Rain tapers off into
western and central MA into RI toward daybreak, but may still be
ongoing across eastern MA toward the commute Friday.

Temps and dewpoints are expected to rise into the lower 50s given
warm and moist advection. Given this, highs may occur in some
locations tonight versus the daytime. SE winds may gust near the
eastern MA coastline to 35 to 40 mph, falling short of Advisory
levels.

Friday:

A much quieter Friday is in store, as surface low moves NE towards
coastal ME early Friday morning. This will bring significant drying
and winds becoming SW during the day. By mid to late morning, full
sun is expected with developing shallow cumulus clouds. A few models
generate some precip underneath these but soundings show well mixed,
dry PBL so opted for mainly dry weather. Friday could actually prove
to be a really nice day as SW winds downslope and push temperatures
into the mid 50s to lower to mid 60s!

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Highlights...

* Scattered to numerous showers Sat morning
* A few showers possible Sunday and cooler, but not a washout
* Mainly dry early to middle of next week along with a warming trend

Friday night through Sunday...

High amplitude mid level trough moves slowly east from the Gt Lakes,
passing across New Eng during Sunday. A series of shortwaves will be
rotating around the trough, the strongest of which lifts northward
across western New Eng Sat morning. Modest forcing for ascent, deep
moisture and cold temps aloft will will bring a period of showers
Sat morning, especially to the interior where a wet morning is
possible. Total totals increase into the mid 50s with this shortwave
with SWI getting close to zero with steep mid level lapse rates 7-
7.5 C/km so perhaps even an isolated t-storm. The shortwave lifts to
the north in the afternoon with some drying so improving conditions
are anticipated through the afternoon with partial sunshine. Temps
slightly above normal.

Then on Sunday the mid level trough and accompanying cold pool aloft
with 500 mb temps around -30C swings through. Forcing is less than
on Sat so just a few showers expected with the trough passage,
otherwise a mix of clouds and sun with breezy NW winds and temps
close to seasonable.

Monday through Wednesday...

Mid level trough axis E of New Eng will move farther E with rising
heights Mon as ridging approaches from the west. Monday will be the
transition day to a warmer pattern with highs reaching upper 50s to
lower 60s. Broad upper ridge develops over the Gt Lakes to New Eng
Tue/Wed but multiple shortwaves rotating around the periphery of the
ridge will make SNE vulnerable to frontal passages and cooler temps.
Ensemble guidance indicates a warmer pattern appears likely for
Tue/Wed but the extent of warming is uncertain. Latest ensemble
guidance has trended cooler with 850 mb temps with lower probs for
MaxT 70+ as true warm sector airmass may remain to the SW. So we
followed NBM guidance with highs well into 60s Tue and potential for
some lower 70s Wed.

Leaning toward dry forecast for Tue/Wed but will have to watch
potential for a few showers either Tue or Wed with any surface or
mid level frontal boundaries nearby.

.AVIATION /08Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Low - less than 30 percent.
Medium - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

06z TAF Update:

Through 12z Thursday: Moderate confidence.

MVFR, possible IFR at BDL, PVD and the Cape airports as stratus
returns landward and moves generally W to WNW. The question is
on how far north will the stratus advance. Less confident on
stratus making it to ORH-BOS, and kept these TAFs mainly VFR.
Light NE to ENE winds.

Today: Moderate confidence.

Generally SCT-OVC VFR N/E of an approximate BAF-PVD-FMH line.
South of that line, expect MVFR to IFR stratus to continue but
periods of VFR cant be ruled out for these TAFs. Should be
generally dry with a better chance for showers BDL-BAF after
00z.

E/ESE winds increase to 10-15 kt, with gusts 20-25 kt.

Tonight: Moderate confidence.

Generally MVFR to IFR with improvement after frontal passage.
Cold front will bring a period of heavy showers with embedded
thunderstorms. Best chance of thunder from CT-RI into eastern
MA, with approximate timing between 00-09z. Included a short
period of VCTS and a CB group in this period but kept the timing
to no more than 3 hrs. Confidence in the occurrence and timing
of thunder is moderate. While strong storms are not expected,
rain could fall heavy at times and reduce visibility to IFR
levels for a period of time.

Strengthening SE low-level jet to 45 to 55 kt will cause SE gusts
to increase to 25-30 kt from the SE.

Friday: High confidence.

VFR. Thinking dry weather prevails but a spotty light shower
can't be ruled out with upper low nearby. Winds become SW 5-10
kt, gusts 18-20 kt across Cape Cod and Islands.

KBOS TAF...Moderate confidence in TAF.

KBDL TAF...Moderate confidence in TAF.

Expect the worst conditions to take place tonight as southeast low
level jet of 65 kt brings SE gusts to 35 kt tonight, with up to 40
kt across the eastern waters. In addition, given the enhanced fetch,
seas will become increasingly shorter-period and rough tonight, and
could build as much as 15 ft near the northeast MA coast with 7-10
ft seas across the southern waters. We will see potential for
thunderstorms on the waters during the overnight hours, with
visibility briefly reduced to as low as one mile at times.

Gale warnings will need to be converted to SCAs into Friday with
winds becoming SW and decreasing.
