.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure builds south from the maritimes tonight, providing
mainly dry and seasonably cool weather. Low pressure then tracks up
the eastern seaboard Thursday, with rain redeveloping across the
area, but not until late in the day over eastern MA. Then periods of
heavy rain Thursday evening and overnight. Behind the departing low,
Friday should feature mainly dry and mild weather. Trending cooler
over the weekend, especially Sunday along with a few afternoon
showers each day, but a washout is not expected. Mainly dry weather
for early to middle of next week, along with a noticeable warming
trending.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
1025 PM Update:

Adjusted sky cover across central MA/eastern CT eastward to the
MA coast to match current observations and envisioned near-term
trends.

Surface ridge with axis from the ME/NH seacoast SW through
central MA and into the NYC metro area is resulting in a drier
NE flow (surface winds around 10 mph) with dropping dewpoints
into the 30s across eastern MA and portions of northern RI. This
is also contributing to considerable clearing of cloudiness
across these same areas; at the same time, overcast persists
closer to and in the lee of the the Berkshires. Most guidance,
even the hourly-updating types, are not handling this sky cover
pattern well at all. Probably will see some clouds try to make
it back eastward but there should be considerably less
cloudiness across eastern MA/RI than further westward.

Ridge will tend to sag S/SE as the night wears on, which will
slacken the NE gradient and should bring an easing to winds by
daybreak. It's possible that we could see mist or fog develop
toward predawn/daybreak where skies have stayed clear but it's
not a strong confidence prospect, and it likely won't happen any
earlier than then as drier air filters in.

Didn't make any changes to temps with values in the upper 30s to
low 40s.

Previous discussion:

Drier air continues to advect in from the northeast, behind the
departing offshore low. Dew pts down into the 30s across
northern MA into VT/NH/ME, along with higher cloud bases in this
region, all an indication of dry air deepening northward-
northeastward. Thus, mainly dry weather overnight, perhaps some
patchy fog. Otherwise, quiet/tranquil weather with temps about 5
degs above normal. Although, NE winds will make it feel cooler
especially near the chilly ocean.

&&

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM FRIDAY/...
Tomorrow

Broad cyclonic flow over the eastern half of the US will support the
development of a new surface low pressure system over the Mid
Atlantic states tomorrow. This will result in winds gradually
transitioning from east/northeast to southeast in southern New
England throughout the day tomorrow. Should generally be a dry day
for most of the region at least through the early afternoon hours.
At that time we may start to see some showery ahead of a warm
front that will be lifting through the region with an approaching
low pressure system. Skies will remain mostly cloudy which will
again limit afternoon high temperatures to the upper 40s and
low 50s.

Tomorrow Night

Potential for some heavy rainfall tomorrow night, especially over
the western areas as a low-pressure system passes over southern
New England. PWATs surge to 1 to 1.3 inches in response to
strong integrated water vapor transport over the region. PWATs
of this magnitude are 2.5 to 3 standard deviations above normal
with respect to climatology. Thus it comes at no surprise that
average precipitation accumulations from the HREF model are
anywhere from 1- 2 to inches across southern New England, with
the highest amounts focused west of the I-495 corridor. Maximum
precipitation accumulations from the HREF are as high as 2-3
inches. Should those accumulations come to fruition, there could
be a risk for some urban/poor drainage type flooding.

Periods of moderate to heavy rainfall may also be associated with
some convective elements. Hi-res model guidance suggests there will
be enough instability to support convection. HREF MUCAPE values
ranging from 100-500 J/kg coupled with strong deep layer shear and
strong synoptic forcing for ascent would certainly support a few
thunderstorms. At this point it would be a  bit of a surprise if any
storms became severe given the unimpressive low-level lapse rates.
However, fairly steep mid-level lapse rates (6.5 to 7.5 C/km) may
setup over southeastern MA, the Cape, and Islands. Should this
happen, wouldn't be surprised to see some small hail/graupel develop
in any of the strong storms that develop. As far as timing goes,
expecting the heaviest rainfall to begin around/after-midnight
and end right around the beginning of the morning commute. Given
the time of day the heavy rainfall is expected to occur, would
expect minimal impacts to travel at this time.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Highlights...

* Improving trend Fri, drier & mild
* Scattered showers this weekend, but not a washout
* Mainly dry early to middle of next week along with a
  significant warming trend

Precipitation...

Dry slot overspreads the region Friday, yielding good column drying
per rapidly decreasing PWATs and K indices. Thus, any early morning
rains will give way to a drying trend by late morning into the
afternoon. Can't rule out an isolated afternoon shower, given
trailing short wave energy pivoting across the region. Although
coverage should be isolated given mid level drying. Then for the
weekend, large amplitude trough advects across New England. Cyclonic
flow and cold pool aloft (-28C to -29C) will result in any morning
sunshine both days giving way to lots of diurnal clouds (may be
overcast at times) and daytime instability low top scattered
showers. Not a washout, but definitely scattered afternoon showers
around. FWIW, both GFS and EC suggest S/WV and deep layer moisture
move across the region Sat morning, then drier in the afternoon. But
low confidence on this timing at this time range. Regarding early to
middle of next week, dominate feature will be building east coast
ridge. Should yield mainly dry weather.

Temperatures...

Cloudy/dreary early Friday morning, but a mix of sun and clouds
thereafter will yield low to mid 60s per model soundings, with
mixing AOA 850 mb. Breezy with WSW winds gusting up to 30 mph at
times. For the weekend, Sunday the cooler and breezier of the two
days, but both slightly above normal (highs low to mid 50s)
especially Saturday. Monday will be our transition day into a
significant warming trend. A chilly start Monday morning but a mild
finish with highs around 60. Then both GFS and EC ensembles have a
warm pattern here much of next week, with large amplitude east coast
ridge and warm westerly flow at 850 mb. Both ensemble systems
offering 850 mb mean temps of +8C to +10C by Wed. Both deterministic
GFS and EC offering multiple days of 70+ and possible a one day near
80 day as well. Even GFS and EC ensembles offering up to 60%
probability of temps exceeding 70 Wed. Although, as we know this
time of year in SNE, we need to watch any short waves riding over
the top of the ridge, that can drop a backdoor front into SNE and
bring an abrupt end to spring warmth. Nonetheless, multiple days
next week of much warmer than normal.

.AVIATION /06Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...

High - greater than 60 percent.

06z TAF Update:

Through 12z Thursday: Moderate confidence.

MVFR, possible IFR at BDL, PVD and the Cape airports as stratus
returns landward and moves generally W to WNW. The question is
on how far north will the stratus advance. Less confident on
stratus making it to ORH-BOS, and kept these TAFs mainly VFR.
Light NE to ENE winds.

Today: Moderate confidence.

Generally SCT-OVC VFR N/E of an approximate BAF-PVD-FMH line.
South of that line, expect MVFR to IFR stratus to continue but
periods of VFR cant be ruled out for these TAFs. Should be
generally dry with a better chance for showers BDL-BAF after
00z.

E/ESE winds increase to 10-15 kt, with gusts 20-25 kt.

Tonight: Moderate confidence.

Generally MVFR to IFR with improvement after frontal passage.
Cold front will bring a period of heavy showers with embedded
thunderstorms. Best chance of thunder from CT-RI into eastern
MA, with approximate timing between 00-09z. Included a short
period of VCTS and a CB group in this period but kept the timing
to no more than 3 hrs. Confidence in the occurrence and timing
of thunder is moderate. While strong storms are not expected,
rain could fall heavy at times and reduce visibility to IFR
levels for a period of time.

Strengthening SE low-level jet to 45 to 55 kt will cause SE gusts
to increase to 25-30 kt from the SE.

Friday: High confidence.

VFR. Thinking dry weather prevails but a spotty light shower
can't be ruled out with upper low nearby. Winds become SW 5-10
kt, gusts 18-20 kt across Cape Cod and Islands.
