near the shoreline of Presque Isle County. Expecting snow showers
to continue to percolate at times today with locally 1-2"/hr
snowfall rates and significantly reduced visibility at times.
Steering flow increases and transitions more west-southwesterly
this evening into tonight leading to a more purely banded lake
effect event. Will be focusing afternoon headline decisions on
WSW flow targeted areas for additional snowfall and impacts from

High Impact Weather Potential...High where heavy lake effect snow bands
set up leading to hazardous travel in some areas.

Continued extremely challenging forecast for today into tonight.
Sharp long wave trough as well as abundant moisture and excellent
over lake instability remain across the Great Lakes through the
near term (and beyond, see below). In addition, relatively light
winds fields continue to produce mesovortices across the "warm"
Great Lakes. There have been a minimum of three of these features
thus far. The one across Lake Huron that brought Rogers City
several inches of snow yesterday has dissipated for the most part.
The one over northern Lake Michigan that pounded parts of
northwest lower with upwards of a foot of snow yesterday into
early this morning has weakened some but it's still producing
heavy snow across parts of Antrim, Charlevoix and southern Otsego
counties at this hour. Lastly, the third one across southeastern
Lake Superior is sinking southward across the central upper
peninsula at the moment. Outside of that, generally light lake
effect snow showers are scattered across northern Michigan. The
big questions for today is how much longer these mesovortices will
hold together, what their movements will be and what impacts they
will possess.

So at least through this morning it will be assumed that the
mesovortex across Lake Michigan will hold together and continue
to produce heavy snow (possibly 1 to 2 inches per hour) across
parts of Antrim, Charlevoix and Otsego counties leading to perhaps
local whiteouts and hazardous travel. Therefore, the warnings
will remain in place for now with several more inches of snow
possible. The mesovortex currently across central upper will have
to be monitored as it likely continues to sink slowly to the south
perhaps impacting parts of northwest lower at some point later
this morning. Meanwhile, general westerly flow lake effect will
continue to impact much of the remainder of northwest lower so the
advisories will remain up through the day for another 2 to 4
inches of accumulation through the day. Elsewhere, snow showers
are expected to increase through the day with an inch or two of
accumulation possible.

The mean steering flow then increases while further backing into
the southwest tonight leading to a more pure lake effect snow
setup. This should shift the bands to closer to the Lake Michigan
shoreline. This will likely necessitate another set of at least
advisory level snow headlines tonight targeting the tip of the
mitt and perhaps spilling into parts of Mackinac county (potential
for at least 3 to 5 inches of accumulation). Elsewhere, snow
shower activity is expected to diminish/tapper off tonight.

Highs today in the low and mid 30s. Lows tonight in the colder mid
teens to around 20 with brisk southwest winds making it feel much
colder.

High Impact Weather Potential: High. Continued heavy snowfall and
travel impacts expected across portions of northern Michigan.

Pattern Synopsis:

An impressive, sharp trough will pivot over the Great Lakes Saturday
and Saturday night as an associated cyclone treks across Ontario and
the upper Great Lakes. As this system slides east of the region,
subsidence provided by split flow aloft will help drive surface high
pressure across the Mississippi/Ohio Valley that looks to nose up
into the area by Sunday afternoon.

Forecast/Details:

As has been well-advertised in previous forecast cycles, heavy
snowfall will continue across portions of northern Michigan Saturday
and Sunday. Southwest low-level winds in place Saturday morning will
help generate heavy snowfall across the Tip of the Mitt and far
eastern upper with additional activity expected across northwest
lower. As has been the case since the beginning of this long-
duration event, forecast soundings display a very impressive
environment in place. Steep lapse rates and deep saturation through
the troposphere will combine with delta-Ts near 20 C and enhanced
forcing ahead of the advancing front to produce snowfall rates of 1-
2"/hour at times with more concentrated banding. The best chances
for these snowfall rates to materialize will be Saturday afternoon
and early evening. Several inches of snow is expected across
northwest lower Michigan through Saturday where those in the Tip of
the Mitt/far eastern upper have the best chance to see totals
approach/exceed 12 hour warning criteria. Quick accumulations on
roads and rapid drops in visibility will create even more hazardous
travel across areas that will have likely already experienced double-
digit event totals by the start of the short term period.

After the front passes late Saturday afternoon, NW/WNW flow will
spread across northern Michigan Saturday night into Sunday. While
this will bring the region its coldest air of the season, forecast
soundings continue to display an environment primed to support
additional heavy lake effect snow. Activity is expected to become
disorganized in the hours following the frontal passage with more
dominant banding setting up overnight when diurnal influences are
absent.

Two primary differences will exist with this activity when compared
to previous days: cold temperatures and strong winds. Air surface
temperatures in the teens will create impressive over-lake
instability and moisture flux when combined with strong winds to
support deep lake effect cloud depth with organizing activity
overnight. While efficient crystal growth is still expected due to
forcing through the DGZ, stronger winds may lead to some shredding
of flakes and colder surface temps will make it less likely for
falling flakes and fresh snowfall to stick together. This is
important for expected impacts heading into Sunday morning as strong
wind gusts approach 35-45 mph near the lakeshores. Should this
materialize as anticipated, whiteout conditions at times and
blowing/drifting snow would cause significant disruptions to traffic
on area roadways where snow bands set up. Even areas away from the
lakeshores with wind gusts of 25-35 mph could see these disruptions
with easily blowable snow. Activity finally looks to subside by
Sunday evening as winds back and dry air works in with
aforementioned high pressure. Otherwise, cold temperatures and
strong winds will drop wind chills into the single digits overnight
and the teens during the day, giving this weekend a true mid-winter
feel as we head towards Thanksgiving.

High Impact Weather Potential: Low for now

Strong troughing will continue to slide from New England over the
Atlantic Sunday night a second wave embedded in the large-scale flow
punches across the northern Great Lakes on Monday. Favorable forcing
aloft will help drive surface pressure falls along a strung-out
front swinging across southern Canada. Relatively meager low-level
moisture in place should be sufficient to support a round of light
lake effect snow showers across the typical NW snowbelts Monday and
Monday night. After this, a period of quiet weather is anticipated
through the middle of the week before long range guidance hints at
the next round of activity arriving by the end of the week.
Otherwise, highs in the mid 30s are anticipated through much of the
week with lows in the upper teens and 20s.
