High Impact Weather Potential: Locally heavy lake effect snow
continues to lead to significant accumulations and treacherous
travel in spots.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast: Little change to the overall pattern this
afternoon-tonight with longwave troughing anchored across the
eastern half of NOAM. Sharp trough axis centered to our west this
afternoon begins to pivot southeast across the far western Great
Lakes tonight, eventually crossing the area Saturday into Saturday
night, but not before shortwave troughing slides across northern
Michigan this evening, aiding to provide an uptick in steering flow
out of the west-southwest. Ample over-lake instability and moisture
will continue to produce impactful lake effect snow through
tonight...especially across those typical west-southwest flow
snowbelts of northwest lower and eastern upper MI.

Primary Forecast Concerns: Locally dangerous travel conditions
continue through tonight as evolution to a more true banded lake
effect event unfolds. Increasingly gusty winds by late tonight.

The last 12-24 hours have certainly been dominated by lake aggregate
troughing processes with multiple mesolows that have produced
remarkably heavy snow, especially across parts of Antrim county,
along with the Lake Huron shoreline of Cheboygan and Presque Isle
counties. Some semblance of this continues early this afternoon,
albeit in a slightly more disorganized fashion. None the less,
pockets of heavy snow remain the rule with 1-2"+/hr snowfall rates
at times.

Heading through this evening, expecting an uptick in winds out of
the west-southwest in association with a passing shortwave, which
will continue overnight and well into the day Saturday. This should
allow for the evolution to a more true banded lake effect event
(already seeing the beginnings of this out across northern Lake
Michigan). Natural convergent flow along the lakeshores will allow
for well-developed convection to persist through much of this time
frame, targeting west-southwest flow snowbelts will the heaviest
snow. More snowfall rates of 1-2"+/hr along with pockets of near-
zero visibility are expected with the highest likelihood of those
snowfall rates occurring across portions of Emmet and Cheboygan
counties, along with parts of eastern Mackinac/Chippewa. Snow
showers will also continue farther south across portions of
northwest lower, just in somewhat of a less impressive manner.

In addition to falling snow, those west-southwesterly winds will
increase through the night with the highest gusts gusts of 25-30 mph
expected near the lakeshores. This will only exacerbate visibility
issues with blowing snow becoming likely in some locations.

With respect to accumulations and headlines, went ahead and
reoriented the map to focus on snowfall potential this
evening/tonight through Saturday morning. Winter Weather Advisories
extended along the Lake Michigan shoreline, despite marginal new
snow amounts, but given increasing winds and warnings up to our
south (for Saturday's snow), felt it was prudent to continue
messaging hazardous travel conditions. New Winter Storm Warnings for
eastern Mackinac/southeastern Chippewa counties for a general 4-10"+
of snow & increasing winds. Given potential for heaviest snow across
the tip of the mitt (5-10" locally 12"+ possible), new Winter Storm
Warning for Emmet/Cheboygan counties -- again borderline 12-hour
warning snowfall criteria for most, but increasing winds will lead
to blowing snow concerns. Headlines will most certainly need to be
extended beyond their current expiration (reorienting in more
typical west-northwest flow locales), and perhaps upgraded in some
locations given the gusty winds beyond Saturday morning.
