.SYNOPSIS...
Our main focus for today is on a developing storm that will cross
the Chukotsk Peninsula on Wednesday. This system will bring
strong winds to western Alaska and significant storm surge to the
Chukchi Sea Wednesday night through Friday.

.DISCUSSION...
The models are in decent agreement with the next system that will
affect the northwest Arctic. This system is currently associated
with a 992 mb low over the Sea of Okhotsk. This low will deepen
as it moves northeast over the Chukotsk Peninsula. This system
will move to the north and will rapidly deepen as it moves into
the Chukchi Sea. By Thursday morning.
Arctic Coast and Brooks Range.. Scattered snow showers will move east across
the area tonight reaching the Alcan Border on Wednesday
afternoon with winds shifting from south west. Strong southerly
winds and precipitation will start to push into the western Arctic
Coast on Wednesday afternoon and will continue into Friday. We
upgraded the high wind watch for the Western Arctic coast on to a
High Wind Warning with gusts of 65 to 75 mph possible. A high wind
watch has also been posted for areas near Utqiagvik where the
winds pick up a little bit latter, with gusts up to 60 mph
possible Thursday afternoon into Friday.
West Coast and Western Interior...Strong southerly winds and rain
will start to push into the coastal areas on Wednesday afternoon,
with winds becoming more southwesterly on Thursday. High wind
warnings for gusts to 60 mph or higher have been issued from St
Lawrence Island north to Point Hope. Winds will die down somewhat
on Friday; however, it will remain breezy into the weekend.
Central and Eastern Interior...Partly to mostly cloudy and dry the
next couple of days. The exception will be some rain and snow
showers moving east across the Brooks Range Tuesday night. Southerly
gap winds gusting 30 to 40 mph will develop through Alaska Range
passes Wednesday night. Patchy fog is expected to develop in
valleys the next couple of nights as well.
Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...A strong low moving
across Chukotka to Wrangel Island by Thursday morning will bring
strong south to southwesterly gales to near storm force winds to
Norton Sound, the Chukchi Sea, and Western Arctic. There continues
to be elevated potential for coastal flooding north of the Bering
Strait and high surf to the south. Several Coastal Flood Warnings
have been issued for north of the Bering Strait with High Surf
and Coastal Flood Advisories to the south.
