Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.Synopsis...
The cold and relatively dry weather over North Alaska will
transition to a warmer and wetter pattern over the weekend.
Winds will increase through tonight over most areas from the
Brooks Range south, and cause very cold wind chill over the
Northern Interior and West Coast. These winds will cause blowing
snow with low visibility starting today over Interior Highway
Summits and over portions of NW Alaska and the Brooks Range
passes.

A weather front moving north over the Interior Fri and Fri night
will bring 2-4 inches of snow to the Western and Northern
Interior Fri into Sat. This front will bring strong chinook winds
across the Alaska Range Fri and Fri night into Sat, with and just
a brief period of light snow over the SE Interior. Temperatures
will warm to near or above freezing late Fri and Sat over the
southern Interior and usher in a chance of freezing rain.

ALoft...
The long wave pattern consists of a deep trough stretching from
the North Pole south over Alaska and into the North Central
Pacific, with a ridge over the Eastern Pacific and Western Canada.
Short wave energy dropping down into the long wave trough causes
it to deepen and retrograde through the weekend while the ridge
builds north over Eastern Alaska and Northwest Canada. This causes
southerly flow to develop over Alaska on Fri, with southerly flow
increasing over the weekend. This will push warm air north over
all over Northern Alaska and cause surface temperature to rise
well above normal over all of Northern Alaska this weekend and
into early next week. Expect warmest conditions Sun and Mon.

Surface...
A trough of low pressure from Prudhoe Bay north will
move to MacKenzie Bay northeast by 3pm Thu, then continue moving
east. Strong high pressure over NE Russia will build east across
the North Slope today and tonight behind this trough. This will
cause West winds of 15 mph and cold wind chills over the Beaufort
Sea Coast to continue today, then weaken tonight.

A 1005 mb low over Eastern Norton Sound will persist into Thu
night. This feature will cause light snow over the West Coast and
Western Interior south of Buckland to continue into Fri with
another 1-2 inches accumulation.

A strong low south of the Alaska Peninsula will move into
the southeast Bering Sea Fri, and to the Yukon Delta as a 980 mb
low on Sat. An occluded front associated with this low will move
to along the Alaska Range by 3am Fri, to Bethel to Fairbanks to
Eagle by 3pm Fri, to the YK Delta to Kotzebue to Arctic Village by
3am Sat, and then weakening along the West Coast and Arctic Coast
on Sat PM. This will bring 2-4 inches of snow to the Western and
Northern Interior Fri into Sat, and cause increasing east winds
and blowing snow across the Arctic Coast Fri PM into Sat. May need
to issue either an advisory or watch for blowing snow along the
Arctic Coast for Fri PM into Sat.

.DISCUSSION...
Models verify well aloft at 00Z, and show similar solutions aloft
through 3pm Fri. Fri night and Sat the GFS begins to diverge from
other models in strength and speed of short waves. The other
models push warmer air and chance of liquid and freezing
precipitation further west than the GFS on Fri night and Sat.

With precipitation, models show similar areal coverage through
Sat, with slight differences in coverage and amounts. Will use a
blend of the GFS, ECMF and NAM for precip areal coverage and
amounts.

A the surface models verify well at 06Z, and show similar
solutions through 3pm Fri. On Fri night and Sat models diverge on
location and strength of surface lows moving north. The ECMF
solution has the low further NW than the other models, while the
GFS and NAM have the feature in further SE than the ECMF on Fri
night and Sat. At this time will use a blend of the NAM and ECMF
for surface features and winds.
