.SYNOPSIS...
Wind chill issues continue across the Interior this morning in
higher terrain along highways and through the Tanana Valley south
of Fairbanks. Strong northeast winds continue out west, where
temperatures have warmed into the single digits below zero.
Blizzard conditions are forecasted to develop along the eastern
Arctic Coast as low pressure moves south from the high Arctic will
cause west winds to increase through tomorrow. Areas of 30s to 50s
below will become more isolated over the next couple of days as
the cold Arctic airmass retreats eastward into Canada.

.DISCUSSION...
Strong ridging aloft will keep a stronghold over northern Alaska
over the next several days as the center of this feature rotates
and meanders over the Chukchi Sea. An upper level closed low
centered over the East Siberian Sea will move east through tonight
across the high Arctic as this feature rolls along the ridge. This
closed low will then dive south to near Banks Island by Wednesday
night, with a shortwave associated with this feature near
Demarcation Point. This closed low will bring another strong
shortwave across the North Slope on Thursday night, causing the
ridge to retreat to the west and creating northerly flow across
the state again by Friday morning. Models remain in good agreement
of the position and strength of these features going into the
weekend before diverging with the trough evolution over northern
Alaska on Saturday.

Strong surface high pressure near 1058 mb in the Yukon Territories
will keep dry and cold conditions across the Central to Eastern
Interior over the next several days. This surface high pressure
will weaken over the next several days as low pressure moves from
the high Arctic to the Queen Elizabeth Islands by Thursday night.
A weather front will move across the North Slope today,
increasing chances for snow from Utqiagvik east through Wednesday.
No other major weather features are expected to impact northern
Alaska going into the weekend.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Eagle Summit continues to have warning level wind chills this
morning, but conditions are expected to improve by this evening.
Other areas along highway summits and through the Tanana Valley
south of Fairbanks are experiencing advisory level wind chills
through today. The coldest temperatures in the 40s to 50s below
zero continue for the Yukon Flats and areas south and east of
Fairbanks this morning, but are expected to see a warming trend as
the coldest air retreats into Canada over the next couple of days.
Valley winds expected to increase near Eagle, so wind chill issues
will become a factor today due to the deep cold persisting
through tomorrow.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Quiet weather conditions this morning across the Arctic Coast,
with temperatures in the 30s to 40s below zero east of Utqiagvik
and single digits below to the 20s below from Utqiagvik west.
Temperatures expected to warm as a weather front moves across the
North Slope, bringing chances for snow from Utqiagvik east
beginning today. West winds will increase and bring blizzard
conditions to the Eastern Beaufort Sea Coast beginning tonight,
with gusts to 45 mph lasting into tomorrow night. The warming
trend will reach its peak by tomorrow before cooling back into the
20s below zero by the end of the week.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Strong northeast winds continue this morning, with some areas
gusting up to 45 mph at times along Norton Sound and south into
the Lower Yukon Valleys and the Yukon Delta. Winds are expected to
decrease through today as high pressure centered over the Seward
Peninsula weakens. Offshore flow will persist through most of the
week as high pressure in the Chukchi Sea and low pressure in the
southern Bering develops.
