Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Light snow have moved into the Interior this afternoon, with mixed
precipitation limited to the Alaska Range Passes. This front will
continue moving north, with Fairbanks being primarily snow free
by late this afternoon due to the chinook pattern intensifying.
Blizzard conditions continue along the Bering Strait Coast due to
snow and blowing snow due to strong northerly flow. Otherwise,
warning level winds in the Alaska Range, advisory level winds
gusting to 55 mph along the Tanana Valley through Delta Junction,
and snow and blowing snow issues across the Interior expected to
persist into tomorrow. This chinook pattern looks to persist
through the weekend for the Interior, with on and off snow out
west.

.DISCUSSION...
A persistent pattern of ridging across most of northern Alaska and
a deep closed trough in the Bering Sea will last through the
weekend. A series of shortwave troughs will rotate north of Alaska
Range during this time period, with surges of warmer air seen at
850 mb today through tonight, tomorrow afternoon through tomorrow
night, and again on Monday. This will cause areas out west to see
chances for freezing precipitation at times through this time
period from tonight through Monday. Model uncertainty remains on
the surge of warm air on Monday, but temperatures into the low
30s does not seem out of the question for areas out west.

A strong trough digging across the northern Pacific on Sunday will
move north into Bristol Bay by Sunday night. This trough will then
gradually break down the ridge going into early next week,
beginning the transition to what looks like some version of colder
and drier temperature going through the end of the week.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Snow showers are making their way north of the Alaska Range this
afternoon, with portions of the Tanana Valley receiving a couple
tenths of an inch accumulations. This front will continue to move
north, with chinook conditions intensifying this afternoon. This
will keep areas to the immediate north of the Alaska Range to
Fairbanks snow free through tonight. Areas further north will see
snow accumulations from 1 to 3 inches, with localized amounts up
to 5 inches for areas of the Lower and Upper Koyukuk, and Middle
Yukon Valleys through tomorrow. Warm temperatures into the mid-30s
in the Alaska Range caused us to up the ice accumulations up to
one tenth of an inch through tonight due to areas in the ALaska
Range already receiving rain. Strong winds gusting to 75 mph
through Alaska Range Passes into tomorrow afternoon are expected
as southerly flow strengthens this afternoon. A Tanana Valley Jet
is also causing gusty east to southeast winds to 55 mph west of
Tok to Delta Junction into tomorrow morning. Additionally, strong
winds causing blowing snow issues for highway summits across the
Interior continue through tonight. The southerly flow pattern is
expected to persist through the weekend, so expect temperatures to
remain in the 20s and low to mid 30s in the Alaska Range and
temperatures reaching the upper 20s to low 30s by Monday.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
East winds have increased across the North Slope, resulting in
blizzard conditions across the Western Arctic Coast and the
Eastern Beaufort Sea Coasts this afternoon. These strong winds
gusting from 45-55 mph in these areas are expected to persist into
tomorrow afternoon before subsiding. The Northern Arctic Coast and
the Central Beaufort Sea Coast will see gusty winds 30-35 mph with
blowing snow issues down to a half mile during this time frame as
well. Strong southerly winds through Brooks Range Passes will
persist through tomorrow causing blowing snow issues as well.
Cold temperatures in the 20s to 30s below zero will quickly warm
as southerly flow erodes the Arctic airmass currently in place
across the North Slope over the next couple of days. Temperatures
are expected to be above normal by Sunday to the single digits
above along the Arctic Coast and the 10s to 20s above along the
Arctic Plains.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Blizzard conditions through the Bering Strait continue this
afternoon as strong northerly flow persists through tonight.
Otherwise, light snow continuing across portions of the West
Coast and Western Interior through tonight, with areas seeing 3 to
6 inches. Ice accumulations are possible up to one tenth of an
inch across the Upper Kuskokwim Valley through tomorrow night.
Another push of snow across portions of the Western Interior looks
to occur late Saturday night ahead of a stronger low bringing
more widespread snow to the area by Monday morning. Attention on
this system will continue as time draws nearer to the event due to
the potential for heavy snow and the possibility for freezing
precipitation Monday into Tuesday. Above average temperatures
associated with the current system out west will moderate to near
normal going through the weekend before a stronger push of warm
air into the area is expected on Monday.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

Extended Days 4 to 7...
Monday looks to be stormy out west as a strong weather system
moves in from the south. At this juncture, looks like a good bet
for heavy snow out west from the Brooks Range south. The
potential for freezing precipitation reaching to the southern
portions of the Western Interior and West Coast cannot be ruled
out as a possibility at this point. Then there looks to be a
transition in the weather pattern as chinook conditions in the
Central and Eastern Interior weakens Monday into Tuesday,
resulting in increasing chances for snow from the aforementioned
winter storm from out west Tuesday into Wednesday. A cooling
trend looks likely beginning Tuesday through the end of next week
as an Arctic airmass settles in across northern Alaska.
