.SYNOPSIS...
A strong arctic front is moving east this morning, with colder
temps settling in over the Mainland. Snow showers will track
across the eastern Brooks Range into the Arctic Coast today and
tonight, with blowing snow and cold wind chills. More snow returns
to the southern Interior late Friday into this weekend.

.DISCUSSION...

Upper Levels and Analysis...
There is a 498 closed arctic upper level low centered over the
Yukon Valley. The arctic front has already pushed across the
Eastern Interior into Canada. Bitterly cold 850 temps are pretty
much now encompassing the entire Mainland and North Slope, with
values of -25 to -33C. Light snow showers and blowing snow
continue over the Eastern AK Range, Upper Tanana, and the eastern
Brooks Range and Arctic Slope. A series of lows are moving into
the eastern Bering Sea from the NPAC. These will play a larger
role heading into the weekend.

Model Discussion...
Numerical models are in very good agreement. Little difference
between them, with the usual bias of the Canadian RGEM being the
strongest with winds over the eastern Arctic. We favored that
model and bumped winds up which will likely mean blowing/drifting
snow and wind chill concerns again later today and tonight.

Central and Eastern Interior...
The arctic front has shifted into Canada with high pressure
building into the Central Interior. West winds continue to blow
across the higher elevations and near the ALCAN, thus the blizzard
warning will remain in effect for the Dalton Highway Summits
through today. Quiet weather otherwise with temps dropping as
skies partially clear and high pressure builds in. The Alaska
Range will see increasing south winds and snow showers as a
weakening fronts from the Gulf crosses over the Range through the
weekend. Increasing snow threats develop for the Interior late
Friday through the weekend as a broad southwest flow develops from
the Bering Sea.

West Coast and Western Interior...
North winds along the coast quickly weaken today thus all current
chill advisories will end this morning. High pressure builds back
in briefly but more north winds develop Friday and Saturday and
will become rather blustery over Norton Sound and along the Bering
Coast. This should push wind chill values back into that -40 to
-50 F range for those areas. More light snow shifts into the Lower
Yukon and Middle Kusko Valley, as well as eastern Norton Sound
and the Yukon Delta this weekend.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Light snow shifts over the Arctic Coast today, bringing a quick
shot of 1-2" of snowfall before exiting tonight. The low track
will compress the flow enough along the Brooks Range to ramp west
winds up into the 25-35 mph range, gusting into the low 40 mph
range over Barter Island. This will create more bitter cold wind
chills and blowing and drifting snow. West winds die off Friday,
and cold high pressure builds in thereafter with north drainage
winds through the Brooks Range.

Extended Forecast Days 4-7...
The extended period forecast begins Sunday with an arctic trough
over the Mainland and a southwest flow and active storm track over
the Gulf of Alaska and Eastern Aleutians. Light snow shifts east
over the Interior with the aforementioned trough, then exits on
Monday. Thereafter, it looks like a possible prolonged period of
rather benign weather as the storm track remains south, and strong
arctic cold high pressure remains in Canada. Light snow threats
will be relegated to the southeast Interior and Eastern AK Range.
Temps looks quite seasonal over most of the forecast area.
