Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

An upper level long wave trough remains south of the Aleutians
while an upper level ridge is in place over Central Alaska.
A vertically stacked low pressure system anchoring this trough
continues to meander south of Aleutians where overcast conditions
are observed from Shemya to Dutch Harbor, with embedded light
rain showers and spotty small craft winds through the favored
gaps.

Further east, another vertically stacked low resides in the
Western Gulf of Alaska. Satellite trends have this system moving
to the northwest toward the southern Alaska Peninsula. Middleton
Island radar shows a band of rain impacting Kodiak Island as the
occluded front approaches. Meanwhile, King Salmon radar shows that
steadier rain remains over Bristol Bay as an upper level short
wave moves through. A tightening pressure gradient between this
low and high pressure to the north is producing small craft and
low-end gale conditions from the Western Gulf of Alaska to Bristol
Bay.

An axis of high pressure along the north Gulf coast combined with
afternoon heating/lower pressure inland and some instability
is causing gap winds to pick up in Southcentral as the afternoon
wears on. This includes Turnagain Arm into Anchorage, the Knik
River Valley into Palmer, and the Copper River.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Models are in reasonably close agreement through Sunday. Larger
differences then develop Sunday night through Tuesday with
handling of a pair of upper level short-waves, one dropping
southward across mainland Alaska and into Southcentral and another
over the Gulf of Alaska lifting northward toward Southcentral.
Models vary on the track of these short-waves and extent of
phasing of the troughs. On the 12Z model cycle the GFS seems to
be the biggest outlier with a much farther east track of the
mainland Alaska short-wave, just clipping the Copper River Basin,
where the rest of the solutions track the short-wave further west
solidly into Southcentral. The model differences make it difficult
to nail down the precipitation forecast. However, there is enough
agreement to have confidence in cooler and cloudier weather
across the region.

.AVIATION...

PANC...The pattern for today is very similar to Friday, with a
surface ridge along the north Gulf coast and a thermal trough
and inland. THus, expect a similar wind forecast, with gusty
southeasterly Turnagain Arm winds bending into the airport this
afternoon and evening, then dying down overnight. On Sunday, a low
will lift northward across the southern Gulf, nudging the surface
ridge farther north into Southcentral. The ridge and associated
pressure gradients also look weaker than today. As a result,
expect standard light sea breezes to hold in longer on Sunday.
A southeasterly Turnagain wind will still likely move in by
evening, but would expect these winds to be quite a bit lighter
than today.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3;
Tonight through Tuesday afternoon)...

Hot, dry, and windy conditions are expected to continue across
much of Southcentral through the remainder of today as the area
remains under the influence of an upper level ridge. Gusty
southeasterly winds through the Turnagain Arm, Knik River Valley,
Western Kenai Peninsula, and Copper River Valley are expected to
diminish as we head into the overnight hours tonight. A gale force
frontal system over the Gulf will continue moving northwestward
overnight that is expected to lead to an increase in cloud cover
especially across the Kenai Peninsula with perhaps a few showers
in the mountainous terrain around Homer. As we head into Sunday,
expect decreasing clouds with another mostly sunny day expected
across much of Southcentral as the region remains sandwiched
between an upper level shortwave dropping south from north of the
Alaska Range and the upper level low over the southern
Gulf/Northeast Pacific. Southcentral can expect Sunday to be yet
again hot and dry, though, winds are not expected to be nearly as
strong as previous days. Also, expect the similar Southeast
direction for any wind in the afternoon.

The upper level shortwave dropping southward from north of the
Alaska Range on Sunday may cause some showers for areas mainly
northeast of Mentasta Lake. There is the slight risk one of the
these showers could produce a lightning strike or two, though,
better chance for this on the northern side of the Alaska Range.

This same upper level shortwave will virtually stall across the
AlCAN border from Monday into Tuesday keeping especially the
Copper River Basin unsettled. This shortwave will also act to help
draw moisture from the Gulf of Alaska upper level low north into
the are resulting in a cooler, cloudier, and wetter regime during
this time. Further west across the Cook Inlet region and the Mat-
SU Valleys, expect increasing clouds during the day on Monday
with Monday night and Tuesday being fairly cloudy across the area.
As a result, expect a fairly cool day on Tuesday with
temperatures struggling to reach 60 degrees. It will all depend on
if we can squeak out any sunshine on Tuesday or not.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3: Tonight
through Tuesday)...

Blustery easterly winds will hang on a while longer before
diminishing early on Sunday as a potent easterly wave moves along
a front from the western Gulf into the eastern Bering Sea through
Sunday morning. Areas of rain showers will remain possible this
evening north of the front and passing low pressure wave across
parts of Bristol Bay. However, the preceding warm/dry air mass
combined with downslope drying off of the Alaska Range will
prevent most rainfall from reaching the ground, and most of the
outlook area will remain dry throughout the next few days.
Increased cloud cover and slightly cooler air advecting in with
the east/southeast flow should keep things a tad cooler for
Sunday, with highs in the low 60s across Bristol Bay to upper 60s
over the Middle Kuskokwim Valley and Kuskokwim Delta.

By Monday, a shortwave ridge moving down into Southwest from the
Norton Sound area will turn prevailing flow more northeasterly and
offshore, ushering in another warm, dry and increasingly clear
day. Highs on Monday for all but higher elevations will once again
soar into the 60s, with a few low 70s possible along and near the
Kuskokwim River. A weak northerly shortwave will move into the
Kuskokwim Delta by Monday night, increasing cloud cover once more
and sending isolated showers across the Kuskokwim Delta and
Kilbucks. Ridging will weaken and flow will shift to more easterly
again by Tuesday, cooling high temperatures back down a few
degrees.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3:
Tonight through Tuesday)...

Overall benign conditions will continue for the next few days,
with a retrograding low expected to arc west across the Bering
between tonight and Sunday night. Rain and southeast winds along
the Alaska Peninsula will diminish by early Sunday as the low
moves west, with areas of rain showers spreading into the eastern
Aleutians and Pribilofs through around midday Sunday. Rain and
northerly winds around 30 kt will develop across the western
Aleutians as the low continues to pinwheel southwest, diminishing
by Monday as the system drifts out into the open North Pacific.
High pressure ridging will expand back over most of the Bering by
Tuesday, yielding few impacts to the region aside from the
persistent marine stratus.

&&.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Tuesday through Thursday)...

Gulf of Alaska: A weak area of low pressure will move southward
into the North Pacific by Wednesday. An area of high pressure
will build over the Gulf through Thursday. Expect winds less than
35 kts and seas less than 20 ft for the Day 3 through 5 period.

Bering Sea: An area of high pressure over the Bering Sea will
maintain winds less than 35 kts and seas less than 20 ft for
the Day 3 through 5 period.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Wednesday through Saturday)...

There is general model agreement with the synoptic scale pattern
for the extended forecast period, with a broad upper level ridge
of high pressure extending across the Bering Sea to mainland
Alaska. Models vary on the short-waves transiting around the
ridge, but this will lead to generally quiet weather across
southern Alaska, the Bering Sea, and Aleutians. With the pattern
would expect abundant low clouds and fog across the Bering and
Aleutians. For southern Alaska, a thermal trough will form
underneath the ridge and this will serve as the focus for
afternoon/evening convection. While it's a long way out, stability
parameters look weak to moderate at best, so we're probably
looking at showers and little in the way of thunderstorms. In
addition, snow melt in the hills and mountains is still ongoing
and until the mountain slopes are snow free, that will continue to
limit instability and thunderstorm potential. Barring any other
forcing mechanisms outside of airmass instability, any convection
that does form will likely be focused near mountain ranges while
valleys will stay mostly dry. Temperatures will cool down from the
very warm temperatures of recent days to closer to normal as we
head through next week.
