Southwest to westerly flow aloft, along with a deepening lee side
trough, will result in strong to damaging wind gusts peaking this
afternoon. Gusts to between 40-50kts will be common this afternoon
with locally 60-70kts over the western and central mountains. An
Airport Weather Warning at KABQ will be required this afternoon
and evening. Smoke from nearby wildfires will drop vsbys to MVFR at
KLVS this morning. Areas of blowing dust are likely across western
into central NM this afternoon and will impact area terminals, but
vsbys should remain mostly VFR, with brief MVFR conditions possible.
Otherwise, VFR conditions will continue. Another mountain wave will
set up tonight over the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and the east
slopes with strong west, downslope winds likely at KLVS, KAXX and
KRTN.

...EXTREMELY DANGEROUS LONG DURATION CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER EVENT
CONTINUES...

.SYNOPSIS...
Persistent strong winds combined with very dry airmass will continue
the potentially historic critical fire weather event through Monday,
though critical fire weather concerns will persist through at least
Thursday. Wind gusts between 50 and 60 mph will be common areawide today,
with gusts up to 75 mph possible tonight along the east slopes of the
Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Strong winds will return Monday as well,
though generally not quite as strong as today. Winds will lessen
further on Tuesday, but will ramp back up on Wednesday and Thursday.
Precipitation chances are bleak, but the best chances will be across
eastern New Mexico Wednesday afternoon and evening. Severe weather
may accompany any storm.

.DISCUSSION...
SHORT TERM...(TODAY THROUGH MONDAY)...
A deepening upper level trough over the west coast will develop a
closed low late Monday near the northern CA coast. This will keep
the winds aloft quite strong through Monday with 700mb speeds from
40 to 50 knots common, and locally 60 knots on the peaks and to the
lee of the central mountain chain and 70 knots in northwest NM
tonight, when the strongest winds move overhead. Winds will diminish
some throughout the day Monday. The airmass will continue to be
exceptionally dry. Temperatures will drop a little today and Monday,
but remain above normal.

We will continue as is with all the wind highlights through tonight.
Wind advisories will be needed Monday.

LONG TERM...(MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY)...
Winds should decouple Monday evening providing some relief to the
long duration strong winds of today through Monday. That said, 7H
winds are still around 35 kts Monday night, thus breezy to locally
windy conditions will persist at mtn top.

The good news is that winds on Tuesday will not be as strong as
Sunday or Monday, but, breezy to windy conditions are still expected
areawide which will continue fire weather concerns. 7H winds during
peak heating should only be around 25-30kts, and the surface low over
southeast CO should not be as deep as Monday, so we should escape
without any wind highlights Tuesday afternoon. But again, it will be
breezy to windy and it will remain exceptionally dry. Gulf moisture
will attempt to return to the far east central plains Tuesday and
Tuesday evening, but it looks like the best moisture and thus,
chances for storms, will remain east of the border. However, outflow
from any storms to the east of NM combined with backing flow due to
an approaching upper level low, will allow Gulf moisture to make a
better return to the eastern plains Tuesday night into Wednesday
morning. Strong south to southwest flow will try to mix out much of
this moisture Wednesday afternoon. However, it looks like there will
be enough remaining moisture to allow for a few strong to severe
storms across far eastern NM Wednesday afternoon and evening.
Elsewhere, the wind will be the bigger story once again. Winds on
Wednesday will certainly be stronger than on Tuesday due to the
approaching upper low and strengthening winds aloft. This will also
mean better chances for blowing dust as well.

The aforementioned upper low, which will be over central CA early
Wednesday, will shift east-northeast Wed night into Thursday,
gradually filling as it does so. This will spread very strong mid
level winds over NM Wednesday night, so high terrain areas can
expect to be windy once again. Currently, models show this jet
shifting quickly to the northeast and east Thursday, thus the
windiest conditions on Thursday afternoon will be across eastern NM.
The passage of this system and associated cold front will bring in
much cooler temperatures. High temperatures on Thursday should drop
at least 5 to 15 degrees from Wednesday's readings across western and
central NM. Unfortunately, it will also bring in even drier air, so
humidity values will remain very low.

Weaker winds on Friday, and models are hinting at a ridge developing
over the Desert Southwest over the weekend, with a back door front
potentially sliding through the plains.

.FIRE WEATHER...
...DANGEROUS AND LONG DURATION CRITICAL TO EXTREME FIRE WEATHER
CONTINUING THIS WEEKEND INTO NEXT WEEK...

Widespread critical to extreme, and locally historic fire weather
behavior today. Winds aloft will remain strong with mixing heights
of 13 to 15 thousand feet today. This will translate to strong and
high winds at the surface with gusts of 40 to 55 mph for most
locations, and potentially damaging winds over the western and
central mountains and highlands with gusts of 60 to 70 mph.
Even though temperatures will be a little lower than Saturday,
relative humidities will remain exceptionally low. Single digit
readings will occur for seven to 16 hours today into tonight.
The atmosphere will remain unstable as well. All of these factors,
as well as the persistent, long duration severe to exceptional
drought, will make today an extremely dangerous fire weather day.

Areas along and just downwind of the central mountain chain (FWZ 103
and 107) will observe intermittent high and gusty winds again
tonight, along with mountain wave activity. In addition to this wind
threat, poor to fair humidity recoveries through Monday morning are
expected. Therefore the Red Flag Warning will persist through the
night in these locations, while elsewhere Red Flag conditions will
last until 1000 pm MDT tonight.

Only a subtle reduction in winds is expected Monday, along with
slightly lower temperatures, but similar humidity trends to what
is expected today. Another day of high Haines indices and very
unstable conditions is also expected. Current Energy Release
Component’s with many fuel sources in the region are already soaring
above the 90th percentiles and many locations could reach historic
levels by day’s end Monday. Monday will be the third day in a row
of such persistent strong winds and abysmally dry conditions.

Wind speeds are not projected to be nearly as strong on Tuesday as
the low dives into CA, but still gusty and exceeding traditional
critical thresholds. Winds will then likely increase again Wednesday
into Thursday as the low ejects into the northern plains, only to be
followed by another potent and progressive upper trough into the
latter part of next week. Low level moisture will likely seep into
the eastern plains late Tuesday into Wednesday night, setting
up a dryline. This will be the only chance for any showers and
thunderstorms.
