.SYNOPSIS...The atmospheric river (AR) that has bringing Western
Washington all the moisture the last few days will gradually be
slipping southward through tonight and tomorrow. The Puget Sound
Convergence Zone will also be setting up as the AR slips south. A
drier Wednesday is expected, but rain and mountain snow is
expected to make its return Wednesday night. It is currently
looking like the weather should settle down a bit by the weekend.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...As of 0200 PM satellite
imagery shows the AR that has been giving the Western Washington
area plenty of precipitation gradually making its way south. But
we anticipate some lingering scattered showers in the area through
Tuesday.
Additionally, we are expecting some post frontal gusty winds
through the rest of today. While the fastest winds will be over
the waters, areas near the waters could see higher wind speeds
compared to more inland locations. Currently a wind advisory has
been issued for the area around Admiralty Inlet.
Going back to the precipitation talk: the Puget Sound Convergence
Zone is going to be setting up this afternoon. This will bring
some additional rainfall to the lowland area and additional
mountain snow. The high resolution models are suggesting that the
PSCZ will initially be directed towards Stevens Pass before going
southward towards Snoqualmie Pass early Tuesday. Based on the
general wind flow pattern it is quite possible that the zone
oscillates a bit between these two Cascade passes during the
overnight and into Tuesday. With the snow levels continuing to
drop down to around 2000 feet by this evening the precipitation
from the PSCZ will be in the form of snow up at the mountain
passes. Between now and Tuesday morning 18-24 inches of new snow
is expected at the passes. With snowfall rates expected to be on
average 1-2 inches per hour. As a shortwave makes its way through
the area early Tuesday morning. As this wave traverses Western
Washington it will create some unstable atmospheric conditions,
first along the coast and then by mid morning east of the Puget
Sound and the Northern Inland waters. Some sun breaks are expected
Tuesday morning which will allow for some daytime heating,
further increasing the instability. As a result, we expect some
scattered convective cells to be popping up in the area tomorrow.
Some of these may be strong enough to produce heavy rain, small
hail and lighting.
Once that wave moves through Tuesday afternoon things will be
drying out and we are expecting a mostly dry Wednesday.
Thursday will be the return to wetter weather. With another system
making its way through Western Washington. Temperatures will be a
bit cooler during this time so there is a chance of some rain snow
mixes at lower elevations during the night/early morning hours.
Snow levels are expected to be around 1000 feet. Depending on the
rate of precipitation some cold air could be pulled down to lower
elevations to see this more wintery precipitation.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...Ensembles are suggesting that
a ridge could extend eastward over Western Washington towards the
end of the week. Which would result in some drier conditions,
however we are expecting some weak shortwaves to also be passing
through. Which could bring a little more lowland rain and mountain
snow over the weekend. Right now the driest day looks to be
Saturday. But as we all know a lot can change between then and
now.

.AVIATION...A frontal system over the area will shift inland this
evening with westerly flow aloft. Low level onshore flow will
follow the front tonight with the flow aloft becoming northwest. A
Puget Sound Convergence Zone is likely tonight behind the front.
It will become slightly unstable over the area on Tuesday. Low
clouds will gradually lift and break up this afternoon and evening
as a front moves inland.
KSEA...Low clouds should break up this afternoon and evening
behind the front. Southwest winds 10-20 knots with higher gusts.

.MARINE...A frontal system over the area will shift inland this
evening with small craft advisory strength winds all waters.
Onshore flow will follow the front tonight into Tuesday. Gale
force west winds are expected in the Central Strait of Juan de
Fuca and East Entrance tonight and Tuesday.
Onshore flow will weaken and turn weakly offshore Tuesday night
and Wednesday as high pressure moves over the area. A second
vigorous frontal system will move through the area Wednesday
night and Thursday. This system will likely bring another round
of gale force winds to most waters. Onshore flow behind the front
on Friday will ease on Saturday.
West swell 10-15 feet over the Coastal Waters and West Entrance
Strait of Juan de Fuca will briefly subside below 10 feet later
Wednesday but then another large westerly swell train will arrive
Thursday.

.HYDROLOGY...As the rain associated with the atmospheric river
continues to move through the area, some area rivers have responded
and have risen to minor flood stage, particularly in King and
Lewis Counties. Lower snow levels have limited more widespread
flooding, keeping more of the high elevation precipitation as
snow, rather than rain. A Flood Watch for King and Lewis Counties
is in effect through Tuesday afternoon. Additionally, there are
multiple flood warnings in effect. These include the Skokomish
River near Potlatch, Tolt River near Carnation, Snoqualmie River
near Carnation, and the Newaukum River near Chehalis. Updates to
the river forecast will be provided as the rivers respond to
additional precipitation.
