.SYNOPSIS...A strong frontal system will bring rain, windy
conditions and heavy mountain snow tonight and Saturday. A cool
upper trough will be over the area for most of next week for
showers and low snow levels.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...A frontal system - warm
front this evening, cold front Saturday morning - will bring
rain, windy conditions and heavy mountain snow. In addition, a
couple of rivers could see minor flooding. See the hydrology
section below for more details.
The coast and interior north of Everett could see southerly high
winds (gusts 50-60 mph) tonight with advisory strength winds
(gusts 45-50 mph) most other areas. Winds should peak early
Saturday morning then taper on Saturday but it will remain
blustery through the day. Local power outages are certainly
possible.
The Cascades and Olympics look to pick up 1.5-3' of new snow
tonight through Saturday night above 2000-3000 feet. Snow levels
will pop up to 3500-4500 feet for a period tonight and Saturday
morning so Snoqualmie Pass will probably see snow turn over to
rain then turn back to snow again Saturday afternoon but higher
elevations should stay all snow. There was also some worry about
freezing rain at Snoqualmie Pass tonight but it's already 33
degrees at the pass this evening so freezing rain is not looking
too likely at this point.
A cool upper trough will settle over the area Sunday and Monday.
Showers will continue with low snow levels (1000-1500 feet for the
most part). An isolated thunderstorm is possible near the coast
Sunday but the pattern does not look especially convective.
Temperatures will be a few degrees below normal with highs mostly
40-45 and lows in the lower to mid 30s. 16
.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...Previous
discussion...Alright, we are going to have to discuss this
potential for the lowlands to see some snow in the coming week. I
think the most important thing to note here is that the
probability of seeing snow is still low. The upper level pattern
will continue to provide some moisture to the area throughout the
week. But none of this is expected to be rather strong as the main
batch of moisture and energy from the trough is well to our
south. With this moderate but persistent supply of moisture and
colder temperatures it is certainly reasonable for the lowlands to
see some snow. At this time ensembles and deterministic models
have all latched onto this potential of snow occuring. What is
varying greatly is accumulations. As of right now the most
probable solution is that some lowland areas could see an
occasional trace of snow mostly during overnight hours.

tonight and Saturday with full southerly gales. Periods of blustery
winds will occur over the weekend as somewhat organized bands of
showers move through but by late in the weekend gradients will
become fairly light as a large low pressure trough along the West
Coast weakens into early next week. Seas will build to 14 to 18 feet
over the weekend then subside again early next week. 19

.HYDROLOGY...Two to four inches of precipitation over the
mountains tonight through Sunday morning will allow area rivers to
rise, especially the Skokomish River in Mason County and rivers
across Grays Harbor, Thurston, and Lewis Counties. Rivers will
primarily respond as snow levels remain in the 3000 ft range across
the Cascades and 4000 ft across the Olympics tonight and early
Saturday morning. These conditions appear to sufficient to cause the
Skokomish River to crest around moderate flood stage Saturday
morning/afternoon and the Newaukum River near Chehalis to crest
around minor flood stage Saturday afternoon/evening. Lower snow
levels on Saturday should bring an end to the river flood threat fir
this event. No additional river flooding expected in the next 7
days.
