.SYNOPSIS...An active weather pattern will continue through at
least the middle of next week as a series of storms move off of
the Pacific into the Pacific Northwest. After a brief break in the
more significant weather today, the next front will move into the
area this evening and overnight tonight. This system will bring
another round of lowland rain, breezy winds, and mountain snow.
Another system, very similar to Monday's, is expected Tuesday into
Wednesday. A ridge of high pressure may then develop over the
western US by the end of the week, pointing to the potential for
drier conditions.

&&

.SHORT TERM /TODAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...The current synoptic pattern
depicts cyclonic flow extending roughly from the Aleutian Islands
into the Pacific Northwest, with several noticeable shorter wave
perturbations, one south of the Gulf of Alaska and another moving
towards the WA/OR Coast. Downstream of this flow resides a split-
flow pattern, with a weak ridge of high pressure over the 4
Corners/desert SW and a more quasi-zonal flow over the southern
Canadian Prairies. At the surface, a cold front is pushing across
Washington, with high pressure over the majority of the Rockies.

Recent MRMS radar imagery continues to depict a widespread area of
stratiform precipitation pushing across the local area from Puget
Sound eastward to the Cascade crest at the time of this writing
(2AM PT). Embedded areas of locally heavy rainfall led to the
issuance of an Areal Flood Advisory earlier this evening for
urban and small stream flooding. Recent trends suggest this threat
is diminishing as the cold front continues eastward and
precipitation continues to push more into the Cascades. The
precipitation over the Cascades will be the main forecast concern
overnight tonight as snow levels will continue to fall to between
2000-2500 feet by daybreak Sunday. Heavy snowfall is expected and
will continue to cause travel impacts across both Snoqualmie and
Stevens Pass overnight tonight and into Sunday morning. Upgraded
the Winter Weather Advisory over the Central Cascades to a Winter
Storm Warning earlier this evening due to travel impacts expected
along with additional snowfall amounts of between 5-10 inches
possible. The Winter Storm Warning will also continue for the
North and South Cascades thru 10AM Sunday. In addition to the
mountain snow, several rivers are expected to remain above flood
stage (see hydro section below).

The local area will see a break in the active weather to some
extent today. The mountain snow coverage will decrease quickly
through the early morning hours as both the surface cold front and
the upper level shortwave pull east of the area, with a few
scattered showers lingering in their wake. Another shortwave
(currently located near Haida Gwaii) is expected to dive into
southern BC and near the Canada/WA border this afternoon. This is
expected to aid in the development of more widespread shower
coverage through the second half of today. This wave will quickly
pass to the E/SE this evening with a shortwave ridge developing
over the area in its wake. It would be easy to be fooled into
thinking this would provide us a break in the active weather,
however, a deepening trough over the Pacific will help push a deep
plume of Pacific moisture towards the area. The deepening of this
wave will induce sfc cyclogenesis out ahead of it, of which the
associated warm frontal portion of the system will bring the next
swath of stratiform rain into the area this evening and overnight
tonight. This system will not be as strong as yesterday's system
but will bring another round of lowland rain, breezy winds, and
mountain snow to the area. Snow levels will begin between
2000-3000ft as the precipitation starts to creep into the area
from the south. They will then rise rather quickly as the warm
front passes to between 4000-5000 ft, however, this rise may be
delayed or not as significant over portions of the Cascades and
will need to be monitored. The progressive nature of the upper
level pattern will push the cold frontal portion of the sfc
cyclone through the area rather quickly through the day on Monday.
Scattered showers can then be expected Monday evening/Monday
night with another shortwave ridge moving into the area.

Yet another frontal system carrying similar impacts to Monday's
storm will follow Tuesday afternoon thru Wednesday morning as
broad scale cyclonic flow over the North Pacific remains
relentless.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...Strong cyclonic flow
over the North Pacific will continue to influence the weather over
the Pacific Northwest as we begin the long term forecast period on
Wednesday. Tuesday's frontal system will be departing the area to
the east, with unsettled conditions persisting through most of the
day on Wednesday in the form of scattered showers. As this occurs,
interesting details lie well downstream of the region over the
North Atlantic/Greenland/E Canada vicinity. A strong ridge of high
pressure will rapidly intensify which signals the potential for a
pattern change. Usually this type of signal implies a -AO and -NAO
pattern which typically allows cold air to penetrate the US,
especially the southern US. There is indication of this
pattern/these conditions setting up during the latter half of next
week. In response, a ridge of high pressure attempt to set up
across some portion of the western US. Sifting through various
ensemble solutions suggest the ridge initially developing across
the Rockies, which may act to keep more of the deep Pacific trough
influence over Washington. This would allow for continued
unsettled conditions through the end of the week, tho there
appears to be the potential for slightly better breaks between
systems. Will keep at least a chance for precipitation through the
end of the week for now. Guidance is suggestive of the ridge
building back towards the PNW just outside of this forecast
period, with very impressive ridging continuing from Greenland
into Canada.

.AVIATION...Westerly flow will persist aloft today as the current
system exits the area to the east. Flow will then become more
west-southwesterly again tonight ahead of the next incoming system
slated to move across the Western Washington late tonight into
Monday. Radar this morning shows the current frontal system
gradually making its way into the Cascades, with the heaviest
precipitation moving east across the foothills and mountains at
this hour. Showers have started to make their way across the
Olympic Peninsula in the wake of the system and are expected to
continue across Western Washington throughout the day as a
shortwave traverses the region. Current conditions at area
terminals have primarily rebounded to VFR in the wake of the
heaviest precipitation associated with the front. However, expect
MVFR conditions to redevelop at most area terminals this morning
with additional showers expected across the region. Showers will
taper this afternoon, likely yielding another rebound to VFR
conditions. The next round of rain will approach from the south
tonight and overnight into Monday, bringing another round of
reduced visibilities and ceilings. Winds will become more
southerly and gradually pick up, becoming gusty at times late
tonight and into the overnight period.

KSEA...Current conditions VFR. Expect MVFR conditions to redevelop
across the terminal this morning as additional showers make their
way into the area throughout the morning hours. Showers will
gradually taper by afternoon for a likely return to VFR
conditions. Southeasterly winds will become more southerly and
persist at 8-12 knots. 14

.MARINE...Winds have eased across area waters tonight in the wake
of a strong frontal system. Small craft conditions will persist
across the majority of the area waters throughout the day. The
next system will approach the region late tonight and overnight
for another round of likely gales for the coastal waters and
northern inland waters. Small craft easterly winds look to develop
along the central and western Strait late tonight and into Monday
as well. Seas 18 to 22 feet will persist across the coastal waters
through this afternoon, before gradually subsiding this evening.
Additional rounds of high seas will be likely for the coastal
waters throughout the week. 14

.HYDROLOGY...Steady, moderate rainfall continues to slowly
shift off to the east early this morning. 24 hour accumulations were
3 to 5 inches across the Olympics, a half inch to over an inch in
the lowlands, and 1.5 to 3.5 inches across the Cascades. Snow levels
remained fairly low for much of the event, limiting runoff to rivers
flowing off the Cascades. As such, only a few points of concern
remaining this morning - the Tolt, the Snoqualmie, and the
Stillaguamish - which still have the potential to reach minor flood
stage.

Across the Olympic Peninsula, flood warnings continue for the
Bogachiel and Satsop rivers which will crest shortly and recede
during the day today. The Skokomish River remains above moderate
flood stage and will see additional rises this week for a prolonged
period of flooding. Further to the south, a flood warning has been
issued for the Chehalis River near Doty. Several other points along
this river will continue to be monitored.

More rainfall expected this week but shouldn't be quite as heavy as
the past 24 hours. Additional rises on area rivers are likely but
widespread flooding not expected. In addition, the landslide threat
will remain elevated for at least the next few days as ground
remains saturated. A few minor mudslides were reported last night
across the Olympic Peninsula so will keep an eye on that going
forward.

...HEAVY RAINFALL THROUGH EARLY THIS WEEK WILL LEAD TO AN INCREASED
THREAT OF LANDSLIDES IN WESTERN WASHINGTON...

Recent heavy rainfall has increased soil moisture to high levels
across western Washington. Several minor mudslides were reported on Saturday
across the Olympic Peninsula. Additional rainfall is expected
through early Wednesday. This amount of rain will put extra pressure
on soil instability, leading to an increased threat of landslides.
Areas above 4000 feet in elevation will see some of the
precipitation as snow and not be as affected.
