Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 1252 PM EDT Sat May 8 2021 .SYNOPSIS... A weak area of low pressure and associated cold front will shift to our east, then weak high pressure follows for tonight into early Sunday. Low pressure is forecast to track across our area Sunday night into Monday morning, with a cold front crossing our area during Monday. Strong high pressure builds in later Tuesday and Wednesday before weakening and shifting offshore during Thursday. Low pressure moving across the southern states Thursday may then track near our region Friday. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY/... We received a few reports of small hail from the New Jersey counties of Middlesex, Monmouth and Ocean late this morning. It was associated with a band of showers that was lifting to our northeast at midday. As weak instability increases through the afternoon a few rumbles of thunder may be possible, although SPC's calibrated thunder probs from the HREF are only in the 10-20% range. So for the time being I've opted to keep thunder out of the forecast because I tend to think we're mainly looking at the potential for a few isolated moderate to heavy showers with decent updrafts that could produce pea size hail but not looking at storms that will have enough charge separation distance to produce much lightning. The NAMnest does show that the storms could eventually coalesce into a line and produce a bit of a bowing segment towards DelMarVa however I haven't quite bit on this particular solution. The activity should wane into the late afternoon as the vort max departs offshore. Expect mostly cloudy skies and highs mostly in the 50s with some areas in far southern New Jersey and Delmarva maxing out near 60 degrees. Heading into the evening hours, the mid level wave tracks well offshore and a brief period of ridging should bring quiet weather to the Mid Atlantic. Light northwest winds will eventually become westerly with neutral temp advection through the night. With clearing skies Saturday night expect temps to be on average about 3 degrees colder than this evening with temps sitting in the low 40s. Sunday starts quiet before clouds increase ahead of the next system. Guidance has continued the trend of slowing down the speed of the warm front with showers expected to move eastern PA and norther NJ beginning in the late afternoon under strong warm air advection. Highs should warm into the upper 50s to low 60s which is still some 10 degrees below normal for early May. && .SHORT TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/... The guidance remains in good agreement that the center of a closed low is just north of the Great Lakes Sunday night and Monday, then it amplifies as it gradually slides east- southeastward Monday night. Fast moving energy ejecting east- northeastward well ahead of this amplifying trough will drive surface low pressure across our area later Sunday night into Monday morning. Since the surface low is forecast to track across our area, at least a portion of the region will get into the warm sector although the northward extent of this will depend on the exact track of the surface low. This is forecast to result in temperatures rising some Sunday night, especially from the Philadelphia metro south and eastward. This will be enhanced by a 40-50 knot southwesterly low- level jet accompanying the surface low. In addition, some areas should get into the 70s Monday as long as enough sunshine can return. It looks like a period of steady rain Sunday night ends early Monday. The bulk of the rain is looking to fall across our northern zones, with much less farther south. Depending on the amplification of the incoming trough, there could be some additional shower development through the afternoon associated with the daytime heating. This may have to battle some incoming drier air though which would act to limit the development, and it appears portions of Delmarva to perhaps far southern New Jersey has the best chance given the quick movement of the system. Overall there does not appear to be much forcing remaining and therefore kept PoPs on the lower side after the initial rain early Monday morning. While some instability is possible, the window of opportunity looks to be short-lived and therefore any thunder potential may be low. Additional drying is expected to occur Monday night. && .LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/... Summary...Dry for awhile along with temperatures possibly getting to or slightly above average especially later in the week, then it may start to turn unsettled to end the week. Synoptic Overview...A large upper-level trough across eastern Canada is forecast to amplify southward across much of the eastern U.S. into Tuesday, then lift out some Wednesday. Another upper-level trough from the Plains is then forecast to shift eastward to the East Coast by Friday. At the surface, strong high pressure builds in later Tuesday although it should weaken especially into Thursday as it shifts offshore. The secondary incoming trough Thursday should result in low pressure tracking across the southern states. We may still remain protected enough from the weakening surface high despite it shifting more offshore, although some guidance has some moisture getting northward into our area Friday as the southern low may try and turn north-northeastward. For Tuesday and Wednesday...Strong high pressure builds in later Tuesday, then weakens as it shifts eastward and eventually offshore Wednesday night. This results in dry conditions but also temperatures will be on the cooler side. Although a few showers are possible Tuesday up north, the core of the upper- level trough may miss us to the north and therefore kept the forecast dry. A breezy day is expected Tuesday with a tight pressure gradient in place due to incoming strong high pressure and low pressure exiting New England. As some energy ejects out of the Plains, surface low development is forecast to take place along a frontal zone draped across the Gulf Coast states. It looks like we remain under the umbrella of high pressure and therefore a dry forecast remains for Wednesday. For Thursday and Friday...As an upper-level trough shifts eastward and arrives in our region into Friday, a surface low across the Southeast U.S. may get pulled far enough north in the form of a coastal low to give us some showers. Some guidance however shows this system cruising safely out to sea and bypassing our area. Opted to lower the PoPs especially for Thursday, then carried chance PoPs for Friday given the uncertainty. && .AVIATION /18Z SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/... The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas. This afternoon...Mainly VFR with additional showers and brief/localized restrictions possible. Northwest winds around 10 knots with gusts to 20 knots. High confidence on pattern with low to moderate confident on specific timing of restrictions. Tonight...VFR as skies clear and winds become westerly 5 to 10 kts. High confidence. Sunday...Mainly VFR. Rain in the afternoon may lead to periods of MVFR generally from the Philly terminals north and west. Southwest to south wind 5 to 10 knots. Moderate confidence. Outlook... Sunday night and Monday...A period of sub-VFR conditions probable along with some rain Sunday night and Monday morning, otherwise VFR ceilings. Southwest to southeast surface winds 5-10 knots, becoming southwest to northwest Monday 10-15 knots with gusts to 20 knots. A period of low-level wind shear possible Sunday night and early Monday morning. Moderate confidence. Tuesday...VFR. Northwest winds around 15 knots with gusts 20-25 knots. High confidence. Wednesday...VFR. Northwest wind 10-15 knots. High confidence. && .MARINE... Below SCA thresholds as winds continue to shift to the west and northwest increasing to 10 to 15 kts. Wind gusts of 20-25 kts are expected this evening generally across the southern Delaware Bay and adjacent Atlantic waters, but the higher end of the gusts will likely only be for a couple of hours and seas should be only 1-3 feet on a four to five second period thus I've opted not to issue anything at this point. Waves on our ocean waters should be 2 to 3 feet. Waves on Delaware Bay are expected to be 2 feet or less. Sunday...No marine headlines are anticipated. Outlook... Sunday night...Small Craft Advisory conditions probable as southwest winds increase and seas build. Some warmer air will be arriving ahead of a cold front, therefore the extent of the vertical mixing is a little less certain.
