DavisWhat forecasters said that day
The local office's own words before this special marine warning went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.
NWS Philadelphia/Mount Holly wrote its last area forecast discussion before this special marine warning went out at Aug 23, 3:12 PM EDT, 2 hours 27 minutes earlier.
Area forecast discussion, Aug 23, 3:12 PM EDT, 2 hours 27 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 312 PM EDT Mon Aug 23 2021 .SYNOPSIS... The remnants of Henri will move from southern New England to the adjacent offshore Atlantic waters through Tuesday. High pressure will build into the eastern U.S. Tuesday, remaining in place through much of the week. A cold front is forecast to move into the Mid-Atlantic late this week into the weekend. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY/... As the decaying Henri begins its shift eastward across southern New England in tandem with a fairly potent midlevel vorticity maximum, the cooler/drier air aloft is prompting instability showers and storms to develop generally north of the I-76/Atlantic City Expressway corridors this afternoon. With MLCAPE 1000-1500 J/kg and PWs approaching 2 inches, the most intense convective cores were capable of producing torrential downpours and some decent outflow winds. Fortunately, the storms are quickly moving, so not expecting much of an additional flood threat, though some quick ponding and nuisance urban flooding is likely. The convection is diurnally driven and will quickly diminish with the loss of daytime heating early this evening. Dry conditions should prevail from the overnight hours through Tuesday, as midlevel ridging will build in the wake of Henri. Though some minor drying of the low levels is expected tonight and Tuesday, backward trajectories are rather weak and will gradually transition back to the south. As a result, warm and rather humid conditions are expected even on Tuesday, though forecast heat indices should remain well below advisory criteria (likely low 90s north to the mid/upper 90s near/southeast of the urban corridor). Only other concern of note is the potential for patchy fog tonight, though the subtle west to northwest winds at the surface and associated lowering of dew points by a few degrees may preclude more widespread development. For now, think the potential is low enough to keep out of the forecast, but will monitor trends closely this evening to see if eventual inclusion is required. && .SHORT TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/... Temperatures will remain warm Tuesday night with most areas staying in the lower 70s. During the day Wednesday, weak mid-level ridging will depart to the east with a weak shortwave approaching from the west. PWATs Wednesday morning will be around 0.8" and the forcing for ascent with the wave is poor at best. Given this, have kept the forecast dry for Wednesday. The lower PWAT air will also allow temperatures to rise solidly into the lower 90s (with mid 90s possible in some areas). This also means that apparent temperature values will be close to heat advisory criteria. && .LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/... The long range forecast still on track with cooler air overspreading the region over the weekend. On Thursday, a weak lee side trough will remain across the region with PWATs recovering to around 1.8". Given this, it looks like the chance of precipitation returns to the region on Thursday, but doesn't appear to be overly high though given the lack of any strong synoptic scale forcing for ascent. High temperatures Thursday will again be in the low 90s with apparent temperatures near heat advisory criteria. By Friday, the upper level low that was over the Hudson Bay will begin to amplify and dive southeast over Quebec. An accompanying cold front will sweep southeast across New England and stall somewhere over New Jersey. Convection will likely be associated with the cold front, the key is just how far south the cold front makes it. Saturday into Sunday surface high pressure over New England will drift southeast towards the Gulf of Maine. Temperatures will be near normal for this time of year, with a chance of precipitation continuing through the weekend especially near the stalled front. On Monday, the stalled front will lift northward ahead of a shortwave moving across southern Ontario and Quebec. Temperatures will be warmer with a good chance for afternoon and evening convection. && .AVIATION /19Z MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/... The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas. This afternoon...Mainly VFR with scattered showers and isolated storms. There may be brief restrictions at the terminals if/when any heavier downpours develop and move through; however, their expected short duration and low confidence regarding timing precludes introduction into the TAFs. Winds generally west around 10 kt with occasional gusts to 20 kt. Moderate confidence on prevailing conditions; low confidence on precipitation. Tonight...Mainly VFR with showers dissipating rapidly after 00z. Patchy fog may develop late tonight, though confidence on coverage/duration is low. Have included mention at ABE/TTN/MIV for now. Winds becoming light and variable. Moderate confidence. Tuesday...VFR with west to northwest winds up to 10 kt. High confidence. Outlook... Tuesday night...Generally VFR conditions. Light and variable winds. High confidence. Wednesday- Wednesday night...Generally VFR conditions. Localized patchy fog at night. Winds will vary between south to southwest 5-10 knots during the day, then become light and variable overnight. Moderate confidence. Thursday- Thursday night...Generally VFR conditions. A chance of showers and thunderstorms which could temporarily lead to restrictions in visibilities. Localized patchy fog at night. Winds will vary between south to southwest 5-10 knots during the day, then become light and variable overnight. Moderate confidence. Friday- Friday night...Generally VFR conditions. A cold front will approach the terminals from the north. Showers and thunderstorms will be possible along and ahead of the cold front. Southwest winds 5-10 knots during the day, then veering from the north overnight. Low confidence on frontal timing. Saturday...VFR conditions, but MVFR in any thunderstorms. Northeast wind 5 to 10 knots. Moderate confidence. && .MARINE... Sub-advisory winds and seas are expected through Tuesday. West winds generally 5 to 15 kt through tonight will become southerly on Tuesday, possibly gusting to around 20 kt or so. Seas will generally be 2 to 4 feet. A few showers/storms may occur through early this evening, mainly on the waters adjacent to New Jersey, with gusty winds and locally higher waves in their proximity. Outlook... Tuesday night-Saturday...Conditions are expected to remain below Small Craft Advisory levels through the period. Rip Currents... The rip-current risk through this evening is in the MODERATE category. The risk for Tuesday looks to be MODERATE for NJ and LOW for DE, as offshore flow continues and surf heights remaining somewhat elevated. && .PHI WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... PA...None. NJ...None.
