Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 713 PM EDT Sat Jul 3 2021 .SYNOPSIS... A strong upper level trough will move to the east of the area tonight into Sunday. Weak high pressure will slide across the region on Sunday. A warm front will lift north through the area on Monday, followed by a cold front around midweek that stalls nearby through the end of the week. The front may interact with possible remnants of tropical cyclone Elsa later in the week. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY/... This evening, the surface trough will slowly push east and begin to wash out. As this occurs, shower and thunderstorm coverage will wane. Lows will be below normal for the season, with most areas outside of the urban centers falling below 60 degrees, with even some mid 50s towards the Poconos. On Sunday, the upper level low will be slowly heading east with the back side, ageostrophic convergence, of the low finally beginning to approach the region. The reason for the slow departure, is the second low located over Ontario/ Quebec will dive south on the back side. This slow departure of the low means another day of showers ( and possibly an isolated rumble of thunder). Coverage will likely be scattered in nature, but updrafts will be much shallower as mid- level dry air rushes into the region. A warming trend will also commence on Sunday as 850 MB temperatures recover towards 12 degrees C (about 2 to 3 degrees warmer than today) with high temperatures reaching near 80 degrees. By Sunday evening, any shower development that has occurred will quickly weaken and diminish in coverage as daytime heating is lost. && .SHORT TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/... The upper level low shifts further to the north and east of our area by Sunday night and we should see things clear out pretty quickly. Some clouds may linger for a bit Sunday night but most areas should start to see clear skies develop. Overnight lows will drop into the 60s across much of the region with some places in the southern Poconos and northwest New Jersey dropping into the mid to upper 50s. A warm front will lift northward across the region on Monday and we see our flow turn back to the southwest. This will start to usher in some warmer (and more seasonable) temperatures. Daytime highs on Monday will rise into the mid to upper 80s (cooler across the north and along the immediate coast). With the southwest flow, we will also start to see moisture increase across the region once again. Dew points will rise from the more comfortable upper 50s to lower 60s from the weekend back into the mid to upper 60s on Monday. While we should remain relatively dry across the forecast area on Monday, there is the potential for a lee side trough to develop to our west. We don't have much support for storm development but could see some isolated showers or thunderstorms during the afternoon or evening, mainly confined near the Poconos. Anything that does develop will be diurnally driven and should taper off towards sunset. Light winds and mostly clear skies should lend itself to a nice summer night across the area. Overnight lows will be in the upper 60s to lower 70s with some low to mid 60s across the northern zones. && .LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/... The main story of the extended period will be a cold front dropping down into our area around midweek and the potential interactions with tropical cyclone Elsa. On Tuesday, high pressure sets up over the Atlantic and should be the main influence to our weather. The southwest flow will continue to bring warm, moist air into the region and it will start to get a bit sticky again outside. With 850mb temps back in the 18C-20C range, expect that daytime highs will be reaching into the low to mid 90s. Dew points rise back into the upper 60s to low 70s, which will cause heat index values into the upper 90s to near 100. We may need heat headlines for Tuesday and will need to monitor the trends over the next couple of days. Beyond Tuesday, there remains plenty of uncertainty as the front drops down into our area. Just how far the front makes it into our area will impact temperatures. Especially on Wednesday, when we could still have heat concerns with highs in the 90s once again. Additionally, the location of TC Elsa will need to monitored as we could potentially start to see some affects from the system. Models still don't have a great handle on these features and aside from the fact that we will very likely have showers and thunderstorms through the Wednesday/Thursday timeframe. So basically we have confidence that we will be stormy but low confidence on the location of the systems that will be impacting us. Again, this is another thing that needs to be monitored over the coming days, especially as Elsa starts to make her way towards the mainland. With the lower confidence, have stayed close to the previous forecast and introduced just a bit of the newer guidance blend. By the end of the week, another upper trough starts to dig down from Canada along with a surface cold front that may approach our area over the weekend. Definitely not what we expect to see as we head through July across the Mid-Atlantic. && .AVIATION /23Z SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/... The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas. Tonight... VFR conditions will start out this evening, before MVFR conditions return on the back side of the departing upper level low for most sites. There could even be some IFR at times overnight. Winds generally light and variable. Moderate confidence. Sunday... Any MVFR conditions from the morning will quickly lift to VFR as the boundary layer quickly mixes out. Another round of scattered showers is possible Sunday afternoon, but coverage will likely be less than Saturday. The chance of thunder also looks pretty low at this time given the entrance of mid-level dry air to sounding profiles. Winds will light and out of the west. High confidence. Outlook... Sunday night...Mainly VFR. Light and variable winds. Moderate confidence. Monday...VFR. Light and variable winds becoming southerly around 5 knots. Winds will become more southwesterly overnight.
