Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 747 PM EDT Mon Oct 4 2021 .SYNOPSIS... A cold front will slowly push southward and weaken as it moves through the region tonight. High pressure will settle near our area later Tuesday. The high combined with a closed upper level low will keep a persistent onshore flow across the region through the rest of the week. Another system may impact the region over the weekend. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY/... Wave of showers and thunderstorms that affected the region late this afternoon through early this evening has largely moved out of the region, and some scattered showers remain. Back door cold front can be seen on KDIX radar, and is passing from northeast from southwest and is in northeast Philadelphia county, across northwest Burlington county, and across Ocean county. Latest surface obs showing northeast winds behind the front and south winds ahead of it. This back door cold front will continue to track to the southwest going through the overnight. Broad troughing will to our west will be closing off across the lower Mississippi Valley late tonight through Tuesday. This will leave the region in an area of weak mid-level flow, but with a few areas of vorticity maxima moving through overnight (albeit subtle). Meanwhile, ridging will build to the northwest. At the surface, weak low pressure will move offshore as high pressure builds in from the north. A vorticity maxima located upstream will pass across the area late this evening and early overnight (9 PM to 3 AM or so). With modest elevated instability still in place, this will likely bring another round of heavy showers and possibly some thunderstorms into the area during this period. The SPC has introduced a Marginal Risk for most of our forecast area, and some very isolated instances of minor wind damage may be possible with this activity. The heavy nature of the rain could pose a localized flooding threat as well. As the backdoor front pushes through the area overnight, low clouds will move into the area in its wake and winds will shift from southwesterly to northeasterly. Areas of drizzle and/or fog will be possible behind the front as well. Lows are expected to be generally in the low to mid 60s with mid 50s across the far north. On Tuesday, the near surface inversion in the wake of the front should prove difficult to mix out through much of the morning and a mostly cloudy day is expected once again. There will be a 20-30% chance of showers, mainly favoring the western and southern zones which are more likely to mix out the shallow stable layer sooner (and thus have higher instability). Some thunder is possible as well. Highs will range from the mid 60s north to mid 70s across the Philly metro to low 80s across our southern Delmarva zones. The wind will remain from the north around 5-10 mph. && .SHORT TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/... The upper level trough digs down into the Mississippi Valley Tuesday night and cuts off through Wednesday. As we move towards Wednesday night the low starts to lift to the north as it opens up. The ridge axis across the Carolinas pushes northward into the Mid-Atlantic as we get sandwiched between the closed low to the west and another trough well to the east of the region. At the surface, high pressure will shift to the south from eastern Canada, settling over the region. With the high to the north, we will have a continued easterly flow across the region. Cloudy skies and drizzle or light showers are possible. Not much in the way of lift around so likely see more drizzle than showers as the persistent easterly flow continues. With the low levels remaining saturated, we can also expect fog to develop though the coverage and density is uncertain at this time. && .LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/... The closed upper low starts to open up and moves into the Ohio Valley around Friday. The low becomes more of a trough as we head into the weekend. At the surface, high pressure will remain nearby, keeping the easterly flow across the region through Friday. Another round of fog will be possible as winds go light at night and we have ample moisture across the area. For the most part, conditions look to remain dry though we could start to see some showers make their way back into the region later Friday. The high starts to push towards the northeast towards the weekend but we are unlikely to lose its influence across the Mid-Atlantic. The high settles to our northeast through the weekend but an inverted ridge noses down across the Mid-Atlantic, keeping the easterly flow across the region. With a tighter gradient though, winds will pick up especially along the coast for Saturday and Sunday. There will be increased chances for rain through the weekend as the remnant of the upper low/trough crosses into our area with its deep plume of moisture. Some timing differences on when the plume and energy arrive though most agree that we should see rain on Saturday. Models are still showing signs of a a low developing offshore over the weekend. However, there are significant differences in timing and location and until these issues are resolved, it is hard to say how much of an influence it may have for our forecast area. && .AVIATION /00Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/... The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas. Tonight...IFR to LIFR ceilings developing from north to south behind a backdoor cold front. Winds will concomitantly shift to the northeast around 5 kts. An additional round and showers is possible after 03Z which may result in VSBY restrictions, then patchy fog and drizzle should keep VSBY low through the remainder of the night. High confidence on IFR occurring, but low confidence on the exact timing and details. Tuesday...Initially IFR restrictions will slowly improve to MVFR after 15Z. Winds northeasterly around 5-10 kts. Slight chance of showers, mainly for ILG and MIV. High confidence. Outlook... Tuesday through Friday...Periods of MVFR or lower conditions likely as we become entrenched in a prolonged period of easterly flow. Expect low ceilings and visibility restrictions in fog, rain, and drizzle, with the lowest conditions most likely during the overnight hours. East to northeast winds for Wednesday and Thursday becoming southeast on Friday. Wind speeds will generally be around 5 to 10 knots during the day and light and variable overnight. Moderate confidence with low confidence on timing and extent of sub-VFR conditions. Saturday...VFR with MVFR or lower possible in rain. Easterly winds around 10 to 15 knots with higher gust possible during the afternoon. Moderate confidence. && .MARINE... Sub-advisory conditions expected through Tuesday. Southwesterly winds around 10-15 kts will become northeasterly late tonight through Tuesday morning. Some gusts up to 20 kts possible. Seas 2-4 feet. Scattered showers and thunderstorms overnight. Outlook... Tuesday through Friday...Building seas in a prolonged easterly flow but expect them to stay just below 5 feet at this time. Mainly east to northeast winds around 10 to 20 knots.
