region. Periods of rain showers persist through Monday followed by
an even colder air mass resulting in the potential for higher

clouds this afternoon with temperatures generally in the 50s in
wake of the passing weather system that brought rain to much of
the region during the past 24 hours. That precipitation has come
to an end with a lull likely to continue through at least the
remainder of the afternoon. That said, a few isolated showers
cannot be ruled out especially over the North Bay this afternoon.

to the continued moist west to northwest flow aloft.
The lastest hi-res forecast models all indicate precipitation will
begin to increase across the North Bay after sunset and through late
tonight. This is in response to a southward digging mid/upper level
trough that will push a frontal boundary across the remainder of the
San Francisco Bay Area and Central Coast on Christmas Day. Periods
of moderate to potentially brief heavy rain will be possible along
the frontal boundary due to much stronger forcing aloft.
Additionally, there is the potential for thunderstorms late Saturday
morning into the afternoon as the boundary progresses southward
across the region. Any convection that does develop will also have
the potential to produce small hail given the much colder, unstable
air mass aloft. In wake of the frontal boundary, widely scattered
rain showers are likely to continue Saturday night into Sunday
morning.
The broad mid/upper level trough will then dig deeper into the
Pacific Northwest and northern California on Sunday. This will drive
another short-wave disturbance across our region resulting in an
uptick in rain showers Sunday night into Monday morning.
Additionally, a much colder air mass will advect into the region
from Monday into Tuesday morning bringing snow levels down to below
1,000 feet in many areas. However, precipitation will likely be on
the decrease during this timeframe. With 1000-500 MB thickness
values dropping to 530-540 dam and 850 MB temperatures falling below
0 deg C, cannot rule out light snow accumulations over the region's
higher ridges and peaks. If the colder air mass and precipitation
align, might even see a mix of snow/rain in portions of the North
Bay and East Bay Valleys by Tuesday morning. Some of the ensembles
also show this at places such as KSTS. That said, the greater impact
to the region will be the much colder overnight temperatures from
Tuesday morning beyond with most locations dropping into the 30s,
even near the coast. Upper 20s will be common in the region's
coldest interior spots, especially if conditions dry/clear earlier
than expected. At this time, temperatures look to moderate slightly
by late next week. This pattern will be worth monitoring in the
coming days as we focus in on the details regarding timing of
coldest air and any associated precipitation. Stay tuned...

.AVIATION...as of 9:44 AM PST Friday...For the 18z TAFs.
Mix of VFR and MVFR as clouds clear out and cigs lift in the
post-frontal environment. NW/W winds around 10-15 kts gusting up
to 20 kts across the area and likely to persist through the
afternoon. Mid and low-level clouds move in ahead of another cold
front this evening into tonight. Winds will slow down briefly and
become more southerly ahead of this front as well. As the front
approaches Friday night, MVFR cigs, VCSH, and southerly winds
increasing to 12-15 kts expected. Moderate to potentially heavier
rain expected in the North Bay ~09-11z, then in the SF Bay
~14-15z, then Monterey Bay ~17-18z Saturday associated with the
FROPA.
Vicinity of KSFO...VFR with low clouds scattering out. Breezy onshore
winds this afternoon through evening around 10-15 kts. Winds turn
southerly tonight ahead of incoming cold front early Saturday
morning. Rain returns with the front, which is expected to reach
SFO/OAK around 14-15z, but VCSH and -RA possible before this
during the morning hours. MVFR cigs to return early Saturday with
this rain.
KSFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay...Rain has exited the area but MVFR cigs and VCSH
lingering. Breezy onshore winds around 10-15 kts this afternoon
with cigs lifting and VFR prevailing. Rain returns towards the
end of the TAF period along with MVFR cigs and southerly winds.

.MARINE...as of 08:48 AM PST Friday...Just isolated showers
possible through this morning. Winds will briefly be from the
northwest behind the front this morning as well, before returning
to the southwest Christmas Eve ahead of the next front with
chances of more rain. Gusty winds along the boundaries will create
steep waves hazardous for smalled vessels. This rainy pattern
will continue into next week.
