.SYNOPSIS...An unsettled pattern continues with rain showers
persisting into this evening. Additional intermittent periods of
rain are possible into early next week with colder temperatures
thereafter.

.DISCUSSION...as of 08:33 PM PST Thursday...We have had some
steady rain across the area today which cause some street flooding
near Millbrae and in other parts of the Bay Area, as well as some
localized flooding in low lying locations of the North Bay.
Preliminary 72 hour rain amounts so far have totaled to:
2 - 3 inches in the North Bay
3 - 4 inches in the coastal mountains of the Bay Area
1 - 2.5 inches around the East Bay hills
0.5 to 1.5 inches around the South Bay
2 - 4 inches in the Santa Cruz mountains
1 - 2 inches around Monterey Bay and the higher terrain of San
Benito4 - 6 inches along the Big Sur coast and around the Santa
Lucia range
There is still some lingering CAPE of around 100 j/Kg which has
allowed some light rain showers to form in the North Bay this
evening. More rain is forecasted for The Bay Area and south later
tonight, however totals should be mild. The next round of
precipitation is forecasted to arrive Christmas. Amounts are
forecasted to be less than today (Thursday), so impacts will be
minimal.

.PREV DISCUSSION...as of 01:50 PM PST Thursday...
Today through Friday:
A positively tilted upper trough was located across the eastern
Pacific this morning with a focused moisture plume extending from
the eastern tropical Pacific towards the central and southern
California coast. Surface low pressure extended from the northeast
pacific along the International Border, with a quasi-stationary
frontal zone extending southwest towards the far northern California
coast. Showers were ongoing across our area this morning within a
warm advection regime located along and ahead of a prefrontal
trough. Light to moderate rain was occurring with these showers,
with briefly heavier downpours occurring at times.
Mesoscale analysis revealed an axis of instability on the leading
edge of the prefrontal trough with most unstable CAPE (Convective
Available Potential Energy -- or a measure approximating the
robustness of a thunderstorm updraft should one form) ranging from
around 100 J/kg around Monterey Bay to over 500 J/kg over the
Pacific waters. This was juxtaposed with effective shear on the
order of 20-35 kt, granted this was lagging behind the greatest
instability. Shallow convection was noted well offshore over the
Pacific with cores occasionally deepening enough for sporadic
lightning production.
For today into Friday expect the western trough to gradually
deamplify as a basal shortwave treks through SoCal. An associated
cold front is forecast to sweep through our area during the first
half of Friday. Shower chances will continue today, with the
greatest potential for higher rain rates remaining generally south
of the Golden Gate. Can't rule out the possibility of a brief
thunderstorm or two as well as lapse rates steepen with the
approaching thermal trough. That said convective cores should remain
shallow in nature with only sporadic (at best) lightning production.
While highly uncertain, there remains a conditional risk for gusty
thunderstorm winds and/or a brief landfalling waterspout this
afternoon in advance of the prefrontal trough. Showers will
gradually decrease from north to south through this evening, with
another batch of showers possibly impacting areas south of the
Golden Gate overnight into Friday morning. Then look for a break in
the precipitation for most areas during the afternoon to early
evening hours on Friday.
With high rain rates being transient in nature widespread hydrologic
issues are not anticipated into tonight. However the combination of
saturated soils and briefly heavy rainfall suggest that the
following impacts are possible:
* Minor flooding of roadways, highway ramps, and poorly draining
areas
* Rapid rises on rivers, creeks, and streams
* Potential for isolated shallow landslides
* A few felled trees are possible
* Slower commute times are likely
Rain rates overall appear low enough to preclude significant issues
with area wildfire burn scars. However we will monitor this today
just in case a rogue heaver band of rain should impact one of these
hydrologically sensitive areas.
Temperatures should remain mild with highs in the upper 50s to lower
60s and lows in the 40s to around 50.
Friday night through Christmas Day:
Troughing deepens along the west coast as phased jet energy
translates through the region. Surface low pressure will trek
through Washington as an associated cold front pushes through our
area during the first half of Christmas Day. Another round of rain
showers are likely from this system with rain amounts averaging 0.25
to 0.75 inches. As usual, the coastal ranges should pick up a bit
more, on the order of 1.0 to 2.0 inches. Temperatures should
remain seasonal with lows ranging from the mid 30s (southern
interior valleys) to the mid and upper 40s (elsewhere).
Sunday through Thursday:
Our active pattern should continue as another shortwave digs south
within the mean western trough early in the week. This should bring
another wet period on Monday into Tuesday as a cold front pushes
through. Cold temperatures and decreasing snow levels suggest some
potential for lower elevation snow, but more time is needed to fine
tune the details on this. Otherwise look for colder temperatures for
mid to late week with frost and freezing temps likely in the valleys.

.AVIATION...as of 09:48 PM PST Thursday...For the 06z TAFs. The
next round of rain is arriving to the Bay Area. It will push
through during the overnight hours. There is a chance for
isolated weak thunderstorms over the ocean, but there is low
confidence in it coming onshore. Winds will remain southerly
before switching to northwesterly behind the front. Heaviest rain
should be between 08Z and 11z around the San Francisco Bay, and
extending to around 14Z for the Monterey Bay and points southward.
Lingering showery activity can be expected behind the front.
Chances for VFR conditions after 20Z are still possible for Friday
afternoon. By Friday evening, winds will switch back to the south,
with chances to increase above 10 knots. Chances for rain along
the next boundary for Friday night into Saturday morning, though
outside this TAF package is expected.
Vicinity of SFO...Rain is expected overnight. Mostly light rain,
but periods of more moderate rain are possible, especially between
08 and 11Z. Lingering showers can be expected with low cigs and
vis into Friday morning. Models are indicating a chance for VFR
Friday afternoon. Winds are out of the south and will remain that
way through the night, but switch to the northwest early Friday
morning. By Friday night, the chances for rain again increase as
the winds increase and return to the south.
KSFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals...IFR conditions are possible for cigs in
the early part of the night, but by Friday morning, reduced
conditions for cigs and vis are expected as the next round of rain
showers moves through. Mostly light rain expected, but periods of
moderate rain is possible. Winds will be out of the south, but
switch to the northwest late Friday morning. Stronger gusts are
possible along the immediate coastline. Limited window of VFR is
possible Friday afternoon, as cigs start to lower late in the TAF
period for the next round of rain on Saturday

.MARINE...as of 08:35 PM PST Thursday...Showers have returned
over the waters and are possible through the overnight hours,
expecting it to taper off Friday afternoon. Winds will briefing be
from the northwest behind the front early Friday, before
returning to the southwest Friday night ahead of the next front
with chances of more rain. Gusty winds along the boundaries will
create steep waves hazardous for smalled vessels. This rainy
pattern is expected to continue into next week.
