.SYNOPSIS...Onshore winds continuing with a few spots cooler than
on Saturday otherwise little additional daytime warming today and
Monday. However, Tuesday daytime highs will be warm to hot mainly
inland, with warmer to hotter temperatures developing Wednesday
and Thursday as high pressure strengthens over California. Hot
temperatures mainly inland again on Friday while some cooling
returns to the immediate coast.

.DISCUSSION...as of 08:50 PM PDT Sunday... Another pleasant
evening was seen tonight across the central CA coast. An upper
level low to our north is dragging the remains of a weaker front
through the northern outer waters. CAM's have trended down with
the chances of anything more than a trace of rain falling in the
higher terrain and coast line of Sonoma county for tonight.
Another push of marine stratus for tonight, with patchy fog
possible in and around the Monterey Bay area Monday morning.
The forecast is on track with the mid week hot temperatures for
the hills and inland locations. A surface high looks to build over
the ocean to our west Tuesday morning, which will bring back
stronger northerly winds over the waters. We are not only
watching the evolving heat for this next week, but will monitor
winds to see if any of these stronger gusts will make it onshore.
Drier air moves in Tuesday, so we could see some short lived fire
weather conditions Wednesday afternoon.

.PREV DISCUSSION...as of 01:15 PM PDT Sunday...GOES-WEST Geocolor
Imagery shows a series of gravity wave clouds coming ashore along
the SF Peninsula and streaming into the Monterey Bay this
afternoon, with light NW onshore flow evident regionwide and
particularly along the immediate coast. Onshore NW flow is keeping
the wind-facing coastline in the low 60s while places like Santa
Cruz and the SF Bay Shoreline are hovering in the 70s F. By
contrast, warmer temperatures are rampant across the interior.
Widespread 80s F and are both being observed in some of our far
interior sites as the warm June sun and the lack of marine layer
influence enhances some of the afternoon heating. This will become
a more pronounced theme in the coming days. As for tonight,
looking at another return of the marine stratus and another mild
night with widespread upper 50s and some low 60s along the Delta
and some of our highest peaks.
No matter how you slice it, the mid-level synoptic setup that the
EC, Canadian, and GFS ensemble members have been signaling for the
past several days has changed only slightly in the latest cluster
analyses. Following the departure of the offshore mid-level trough
that introduced a good coating of low-level moisture-returns to
the coast and bays, the building mid-level ridge over the
4-corners region will begin its expansion westward into California
starting early Tuesday of this week. Our neighboring offices to
the east are on track to receive the bulk of the heat event, with
temps in the Central Valley forecast to peak out in the 110s F at
some of their hottest locations. As for our neck of the woods,
the warming trend will begin by Tuesday and will be pronounced in
our interior locations (e.g. the Diablo Range, East Bay interior
valleys, East Bay Mountains, North Bay interior valleys, North Bay
Mountains, San Benito County, and the Santa Lucia Range) as the
high pressure steadily increases through the middle of the week.
Have made some minor adjustments to temps to account for a
slightly more westward centering of the mid-level ridge on the
latest EC and GFS deterministic solutions, but the trend remains
the same for our CWA: heating begins on Tuesday with widespread
80s and low 90s F during the day and mild overnight temps in the
upper 50s to low 60s F. The poor overnight temperature recoveries
will be a recurring theme for much of next week as the high
pressure system impedes the progression of W/NW flow that would
otherwise help to cool the interior off. As such, expect dry and
hotter temperatures during the day and little overnight
temperature recovery for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.
Temperatures across the interior are on track to peak on Thursday,
with widespread 90s and low 100s F for max temps and some of our
hottest locations (e.g. Pinnacles, Lake Berryessa, etc) getting
into the 105-100 F range. Will continue to evaluate heat risk for
these locations but for now are trending towards a heat event for
much of our interior. Should note that while our temperatures are
not forecast to be as hot as what our eastern neighbors in the
Central Valley are on track for, they will still be running 10-15
degrees above average for this time of the year.
Notice how we left out the SF Peninsula, SF Bay Shoreline, and
the coastal Monterey Bay and northern Salinas Valley all out of
the heat conversation. Higher-res/mid-range solutions continue to
trend on a potent W/NW onshore flow all along the coast. As tends
to be be the case with these mid-level ridge setups, the hot air
over the central valley will help to support the development of a
thermal low at the surface level. This synoptic feature will allow
for the development of an onshore gradient between our Pacific
coastline and the interior, which in turn will help to promote
a sea breeze and a marine boundary layer that, should it hold
together, will act as our natural AC. As tends to be the case with
these setups, are looking at the potential for some very sharp
temperature gradients within a mere miles between the coast and
some inland spots (e.g. 60s F in SF vs 80s F in the East Bay, 70s
F in Santa Cruz vs 90s F in the Santa Cruz Mountains). Will wait
on the next model runs to reassess this setup, but for now the
synoptic setup that both the ensemble members and deterministic
solutions signal for our region is one that will likely keep this
upcoming week's heat event confined to the interior.
The upper-level ridge is progged to begin breaking down by Friday,
with a more zonal environment developing through the weekend. This
will translate into a cooling trend but should note that the
interior will likely take some time to return to seasonal
temperatures given the ridge-dominated environment through the
early part of the following week. Given the latest ECMWF weeklies,
the outlook for the second half of June, as tends to be the case
for this time of the year, is bone dry.

.AVIATION...as of 5:28 PM PDT Sunday...Expect MVFR and IFR for some
into the night as stratus moves inland. Areas around the Monterey
Bay look to see another batch of fog developing in the late night
with LIFR conditions. Cloud cover begins to thin in the mid to
late morning leading into another afternoon of widespread VFR with
breezy westerly winds.
Vicinity of KSFO...Expect MVFR to turn to IFR as CIGs fall to
around 700 ft AGL in the late night. These lowered CIGs persist
until cloud cover begins to thin in the mid morning, leading back
into VFR as cloud cover becomes scattered. Expect a mostly clear
afternoon for Monday with westerly winds peaking around 17 kts
along with 25 kt gusts.
SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals...IFR looks to turn to LIFR as CIGs fall
below 500 ft in the late night with building fog. Lowered ceilings
look to last into the mid to late morning before going VFR for
Monday afternoon.

.MARINE...as of 11:03 PM PDT Sunday...Light winds across the
coastal waters this evening, with some breezy northwest winds
along the Big Sur coast south of Point Sur. A passing cold front
will bring a slight chance for a few showers north of Point Reyes
this evening. Patchy dense fog will be possible overnight into the
morning. Behind the front high pressure will build in leading to
increasing northwest winds through midweek. The increasing winds
will result in steeper wind waves, fresh swell, and hazardous
conditions to smaller craft.
