What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this excessive heat warning went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS San Francisco Bay Area, CA wrote its last area forecast discussion before this excessive heat warning went out at Jun 14, 10:45 AM PDT, 2 hours 32 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Jun 14, 10:45 AM PDT, 2 hours 32 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area
1045 AM PDT Mon Jun 14 2021

.SYNOPSIS...Monday is set up to similar to this past weekend as
an upper level trough pushes inland into the Pacific Northwest.
Warming conditions begin on Tuesday across the interior with more
robust warming from mid to late week. Look for increased heat
related risk, especially across the interior from Wednesday into
Friday with peak heating likely on Thursday. Meanwhile, onshore
flow near the coast should limit overall heat risks.

&&

.DISCUSSION...as of 09:01 AM PDT Monday...Low clouds continue to
hug the immediate Pacific Coastline, but are slowly clearing
farther inland. Conditions are expected to be mild on Monday
afternoon with temperatures in the 60s along the immediate
coastline with 70s and isolated 80s for the far interior areas.

Forecast remains on track. Warming is expected to begin on Tuesday
with Wednesday through Friday being the hottest days of the week.
Models are consistently showing peak heating on Thursday. But the
trickiest aspect to hone in on appears to be Wednesday. Onshore
winds are expected to be strong enough that to help keep coastal
areas from experiencing the heat. As the new 12Z model data comes
in, the forecast will be fine tuned. But it looks like the end of
the week will get hot for the Bay Area, especially for farther
inland areas.

&&

.PREV DISCUSSION...as of 03:44 AM PDT Monday...A mid/upper level
trough off of the Pacific Northwest coast has driven a weakening
frontal boundary southward into northern California. Ahead of this
boundary, the marine layer has deepened and allowed for low
clouds to spread well inland with patchy drizzle also being
reported along the North Bay coastline and around the San
Francisco Bay Area. Cannot rule out patchy drizzle to continue
through the morning along the coastline and in the hills with the
potential for a few hundreds of an inch to accumulate in some
areas. Otherwise, not expecting widespread measurable rainfall.

For the rest of the day, look for low clouds to dissipate over most
inland areas with temperatures warming into the 60s to lower 70s
near the coast to upper 70s or lower 80s across the interior.
Overall, weather conditions this Monday will be similar to this
weekend. A warming trend will then begin to develop on Tuesday with
more widespread upper 70s to upper 80s across the interior. This
will be a result of the exiting aforementioned trough and high
pressure strengthening over the Four Corners.

A more robust warming trend is anticipated for Wednesday into
Thursday as the high pressure over the Four Corners strengthens and
expands westward into California. The bulk of the heat is forecast
to occur across interior portions of the state such as the
Central Valley where temperatures may peak out in the 110s F.
That said, still expecting locations such as the Diablo Range, East
Bay interior valleys, East Bay Mountains, North Bay interior
valleys, North Bay Mountains, San Benito County, and the Santa Lucia
Range to see upper 90s to around 105 F by Wednesday afternoon.
Additionally, the very warm 850 mb temperatures aloft and drier, at
times offshore flow in the hills will keep very mild overnights with
temperatures only dropping into the 70s if not lower 80s from
Wednesday morning through at least Friday morning. With the peak
heating anticipated on Thursday across the interior, look for more
widespread triple digit heat for the aforementioned locations.
Ensemble guidance continues to indicate that onshore winds (albeit
light) will maintain cooler conditions near the coast through this
heat event. Regardless, look for coastal areas to reach into the 70s
both Wednesday and Thursday with some 80s possible in areas such as
Santa Cruz with drier downsloping winds. With these hot interior
temperatures and mild to down right warm overnights in the hills,
an Excessive Heat Watch will likely be needed early this week with
the Heat Advisory/Excessive Heat Warning possible by midweek.

The mid/upper level ridge is projected to weaken by Friday and allow
for onshore flow to spread a bit more inland. While this may cool
conditions by a few degrees near the coast and into adjacent
valleys, widespread 90s to around 105 F (region's hottest locations)
will again be likely. Above average temperatures are then expected
to linger into Saturday before more widespread cooling takes place
late in the weekend. These hot and dry conditions will lead to
elevated fire concerns mid/late week and will need to be monitored
in the coming days.

&&

.AVIATION...as of 10:47 AM PDT Monday...For the 18z TAFs.
Vertical Profilers along the coast are picking up on the rapid
compression of the marine layer. Most of the coastal stratus at
this point is hanging on by a thread and is scheduled for
dispersion here shortly. Expect widespread VFR this afternoon with
only a few high-based clouds overhead and some light winds along
the coast, gaps, and passes. While some stratus will return
overnight, the exiting low pressure will make way for a building
high pressure from the east that will continue to compress the
marine layer and weaken surface winds. Limited MVFR overnight as a
result at only some of the coastal terminals and SFO vicinity.
Calm/light winds will also result in some LLWS at some of the
North Bay terminals as the mid-level low departs the region from
7Z to 12Z. Widespread VFR and calm/light winds will reign supreme
across the region by tomorrow morning and through the end of the
TAF period as the surface high becomes the dominant synoptic
feature.

Vicinity of KSFO...Bodega Bay profiler is picking up on the
compression of the marine stratus late this morning as evidenced
by the thinning stratus along the SF Bay shoreline. SFO/OAK will
become VFR shortly. Onshore winds will peak out at 15-20kts with
occasional 20-25kts this afternoon but will weaken overnight as
the high pressure builds overhead. While cannot entirely rule out
some brief MVFR cigs within the vicinity (see TAF), the rapid
compression of the marine layer will result in a drier air mass
overnight and into tomorrow morning, so keeping MVFR limited in
scope and time. Will be waking up to light winds and widespread
VFR that will last through the end of the TAF period.

SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.

Monterey Bay Terminals...Lingering stratus along the SNS/MRY
terminals this morning will make way for VFR ths afternoon as the
marine layer begins to compress ahead of the building high
pressure to our east. Onshore winds will remain light (10-15kts)
across the Monterey Bay and weaken gradually overnight. While some
FEW/SCT cigs are in store for the region tonight, marine stratus
return will be limited to the immediate coast. Have added TEMPO to
MRY to account for brief MVFR cigs but given the overnight
compression and rapid buildup of the high, have kept VFR for SNS.
Expect widespread VFR tomorrow morning and through the end of the
TAF period.

&&

.MARINE...as of 10:31 AM PDT Monday...Increasing northwest winds
are expected across the waters today and tonight as high pressure
builds farther inland. The strongest winds are expected along the
Big Sur coast south of Point Sur increasing more so on Tuesday
when gale force gusts may develop. Increasing winds will generate
steep northwest waves resulting in hazardous seas conditions,
particularly for smaller vessels. Light southerly swell will
continue along with mainly wind driven northwest waves.
