.SYNOPSIS...A seasonable weather pattern will continue today and
into the weekend. A well established marine layer will keep
conditions mild near the coast and bay while interior areas will
be seasonably warm. Expect night and morning low clouds followed
by sunny afternoons. An incoming trough will arrive later Sunday
into Monday and usher in cooler temperatures inland for next week
with little change along the coast.

.DISCUSSION...as of 01:10 PM PDT Thursday...GOES-WEST imagery
this afternoon is capturing some lingering marine stratus along
the immediate coast with a shallow return-signature past the
Golden Gate. Despite the earlier clearing temps across the CWA and
particularly over the interior are only running a couple of
degrees warmer than this time 24 hours ago owing to a 1500 ft
marine layer; latest Fort Ord/Bodega Bay profilers have held a
steady depth since the overnight hours as the axis of the mid-
level ridge continues to shift east towards the lee of the Sierra.
As such, rinse and repeat with regards to max temps today, with
cool 50s/60s along the coast and 80s/90s farther inland. Will see
a return of the stratus this evening. Overnight temps will remain
relatively mild in the hills and mountains (mid 50s with low 60s F
at the highest North Bay peaks) while the rest of the region will
start their Friday morning with temps in the low-to-mid 50s F.
The anticyclonic flow with respect to our region, in conjunction
with lowering mid-level heights to our north and west, will help to
promote a steady stratiform environment along the coast tonight and
into tomorrow. As such, looking at widespread max temps (upper 50s
- mid 60s F) at the coast, (60s - low 70s F) bay shoreline, and (70s
- low 80s F) inland valleys. These max temps will be met for the
remainder of the week. Will still observe upper 80s to mid 90s in
the far interior hills and mountains through Sunday as the air mass
becomes more zonal over us ahead of an approaching trough.
The latest EC, GFS, and Canadian members are all suggesting a zonal
mid-level interface will quickly be replaced with a deepening trough
along 140W between starting early next week(Mon/Tues). As such, have
made minor tweaks adjustments to our max temperatures for inland
locations (e.g. Concord, Livermore, North Bay Mountains) in the
extended forecast (out to 8 days) to account for a greater
onshore influence. This cooler air mass will help to greatly cool
off not only our hottest inland spots but also much of the Central
Valley as the members are suggesting a troughing signature that
will help to promote a more June Gloom-like environment along the
coast.
Do want to emphasize that this upcoming trough in the extended is
currently progged to carry nearly non-existent moisture-returns,
with the exception being the possibility for some light coastal
drizzle. These sort of dry trough passages are typical for this time
of the year. Nonetheless these environments help greatly in reducing
fire weather concerns owing to the high relative humidities that
will develop under the marine layer; these tend to range between
1500- 2000 ft in depth. As for the longer-range outlook, EC
Weeklies hint at a negative PNA index for much of June. This is a
promising return given that negative indices are heavily
correlated with troughing and suggests we may be in for a more
promising June-Gloom setup. May recall that last year's June Gloom
was very limited in its scope over long stretches of the coast so
are hopeful that this signal verifies this month. Stay tuned.

.AVIATION...as of 10:50 AM PDT Thursday...For the 18z TAFs. Stratus
remains thick on the coast but is failing to filter too far into
the SF Bay. The stratus is dominating the Monterey Bay which kept
the Monterey Bay adjacent terminals in MVFR while the rest of the
region turned to VFR. Stratus in that area will continue to thin
into the afternoon, leading to VFR. Westerly winds will be breezy
and gusty into the evening before weakening into the night. Wind
aloft over North Bay terminals will remain strong, leading to
concerns for LLWS overnight. Stratus moves inland in the late
night leading to MVFR for SF Bay terminals and IFR around the
Monterey Bay and at STS. Cloud cover looks to thin in the mid to
late morning Friday. This will lead into another afternoon of VFR.
Vicinity of KSFO...VFR with westerly winds around 18 kts and 24 kt gusts
this afternoon decreasing slightly into the night and becoming
less gusty in the late night. Expect VFR though until the late
night and early morning as stratus filters into the area, causing
MVFR. Cloud cover thins into the late morning as winds build. This
will lead into VFR for Friday afternoon with another batch of
gusty westerly winds.
SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals...Stratus lingers in the Monterey Bay, but
retreats from the terminals into the afternoon, leading to VFR.
Expect mild to moderate westerly winds through the day. The
stratus moves inland in the evening leading to IFR overnight which
looks to last through most of Friday morning.

northern outer waters remain moderately gusty and these stronger
winds will slowly extend southward into tonight. Winds down the
Big Sur Coast south of Point Sur will also increase this
afternoon and evening as a coastal jet develops. These stronger
winds will generate steep to very steep waves and create
hazardous seas for smaller vessels which will continue through
much of the weekend. Weak, mixed northwest and southerly swells
continue through the waters. By the weekend, the swells will be
weak enough, that the seas will be mostly comprised of wind driven
waves.
