.SYNOPSIS...A seasonable weather pattern will persist over the
region into the upcoming weekend with periods of night/morning low
clouds. Temperatures will be at or above normal across the interior
while onshore flow continues to maintain cooler conditions near
the coast. A cooling trend is forecast for the interior early
next week.
&&
.DISCUSSION...As of 9:00 PM PDT Wednesday...Although an upper
ridge remained centered over Central California today, the cooling
trend that began yesterday continued today, as onshore flow
continued to increase. High temperatures today were generally 3-6
degrees cooler than yesterday. The exception were the valleys
farthest inland where very warm to hot conditions persisted. For
example, the high in Pinnacles National Park was 100 both
yesterday and today.
Little change is forecast through the end of the week as the ridge
is forecast to move very slowly eastward. Would expect continued
gradual cooling over the next few days as the ridge axis shifts a
bit farther to the east. However, most guidance points to a brief
increase in temperatures on Thursday, especially across the North
Bay, as north-to-south pressure gradients increase modestly and
limit onshore flow to some extent. This should also mean earlier
clearing of low clouds/fog in the North Bay tomorrow. Elsewhere,
expect little change as a 1500-feet deep marine layer continues to
spread into most coastal valleys during the night and morning
hours.
From Previous Discussion...Forecast ensembles finally indicate a
break in the ridge aloft early next week as a mid/upper level
trough drops southward into the Pacific Northwest. This should
allow for cooling across the interior as well as cooling and
moistening conditions in the region's higher elevations.
Meanwhile, not expecting much change near the coast which will
continue to be dominated by the summertime marine layer.

.AVIATION...as of 10:42 PM PDT Wednesday...For the 06z TAFs. Cigs
are hovering right around the 1000 ft mark, making for widespread
IFR/MVFR conditions, with localized LIFR conditions for coastal
terminals. As it often does, expect the cloud cover through the
evening as the breezy onshore winds subside. Models hinting at a
later clearing, so the TAFs were knocked back to the 18/19Z hour,
but there is uncertainty for exact timing of the switch to VFR
tomorrow afternoon. Breezy onshore winds, with coastal gaps
expected to have the strongest winds. The marine will move in once
again tomorrow night after 06Z for a return to IFR/MVFR
conditions.
Vicinity of KSFO...IFR expected through the night. As the ceilings
are just under 1000 ft, there are chances for intermittent times
of MVFR conditions, but should be short lived. Will monitor if
cigs lower after 12Z, but confidence decreased so lower cigs were
removed from the TAF. Winds are onshore and breezy and will slowly
reduce through the night. Cigs should lift and break up after
17Z. Winds will increase Thursday afternoon with winds up to 20
kts and an occasional stronger gust up to 25 kts. Clouds return to
the SF Bay Thursday night, late. Chance for a return to IFR
conditions expected at KSFO.
SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals...Another night in LIFR conditions around
the Bay with times at VLIFR. Conditions will not improve until 17Z
Thursday, with clouds remaining longer at coastal terminals like
KMRY. Brief clearing Thursday afternoon with breezy onshore winds.
But a return to IFR/LIFR conditions on Thursday night.

.MARINE...as of 08:52 PM PDT Wednesday...Gusty northwest winds
over the coastal waters north of Point Reyes will persist and
spread a bit farther to the south by Thursday night. These winds
will generate steep to very steep waves and create hazardous seas
for smaller vessels. Though the seas remain predominately wind
driven, mixed northwest and southerly swells will move through the
waters.
