.SHORT TERM...(Today through Friday)...

Unfortunately model agreement and consistency continues to be very
poor given that the potential snow will begin tonight, and this
leads to low forecast confidence and the potential for significant
changes to the forecast as the event draws nearer. Models
generally agree that a closed H5 low will track across the region
with a surface low tracking by to our south, although the exact
track varies from run to run and between models. Precipitation
will begin moving into southern areas later today, then spread
north and northeast before diminishing from west to east on
Friday. Thermal profiles suggest that much of the precipitation
will be rain at least early on in the lower elevations, although
the freezing levels and strength of a warm nose aloft again vary
significantly in the models. Also complicating the forecast is the
existence of low level downslope flow coming across the mountains
for a significant portion of the event, but indications are still
unclear if it will be strong enough to have much effect on
thermal profiles and precip amounts. The other complicating factor
is the steep lapse rates under the upper low. Cannot rule out
some very weak elevated instability at least briefly, which would
certainly affect precipitation amounts.

Confidence has risen that we will reach warning criteria for snow
in the higher elevations of the mountains from Blount county north
to Johnson, so will upgrade the watch to a warning for these
areas. Further south will keep the watch for now given lower
confidence. Areas such as the Plateau and SW VA look to have a
better chance for much of the precipitation to be snow, but right
now precipitation amounts look lower there with some models
suggesting little precipitation at all. We may end up needing a
winter weather advisory for portions of the valley, Plateau, and
SW VA, but forecast confidence does not warrant an advisory yet so
plan to issue an SPS for now and let the day shift take one more
look at it before the precipitation begins.

.LONG TERM...(Friday night through Wednesday night)...
By Friday night, the area will be on the tail-end of the upper level
low as its lifts northeast. Moisture will likely stick around across
the high terrain with areas of flurries or light snow showers. Any
additional accumulations will be very light. Much cooler
temperatures are expected with highs on Saturday remaining in the
30's to low 40's with extensive cloud cover. Dry weather will
continue through the remainder of the weekend as high pressure at
the surface moves into the Ohio Valley. Temperatures will remain
below normal.

Late Sunday night...a southern stream disturbance digs into the
southern plains and will lift northeast on Monday. Precipitation
will develop to the south and lift north Monday afternoon. There is
still uncertainty with this system regarding the track of the
surface low, any potential deformation zone, and the thermal
profile. At this point, the forecast will feature chance PoPs with
rain or snow. Temperatures below normal will persist through
Tuesday underneath cyclonic flow aloft.

MVFR cigs at TRI to start should be short-lived. Once these have
moved out, will see an increase in high clouds that will lower by
later in the period, with some rain moving into at least CHA late
in the period and perhaps as far north as TYS. VFR conditions can
be expected at TYS entire period and TRI once the early lower
clouds exit. At CHA conditions will be VFR before lowering as the
rain moves in, with IFR likely by the very end of the period with
low cigs and rain/fog. Winds will generally be from the north and
northeast and less than 10 kts.
