AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION

.SHORT TERM (Today through Tomorrow)...

Currently have rain moving across the eastern Tennessee Valley as
the trough continues to swing through the eastern  half of the
country. There is another round of light precipitation moving across
Middle Tennessee and expect that to move through the forecast area
tonight and could bring some light precipitation, including possibly
snow. Latest high resolution models have backed off on precipitation
overnight when temperatures drop below freezing in the higher
elevation overnight. But if enough moisture gets caught on this side
of the mountains usually the low level jet is able to squeeze it out
along the topography. Have stuck relatively close to the WPC
forecast for snowfall with a dusting across parts of southwest
Virginia and slowly increasing totals up to around 3 inches at the
very tops of the mountains. Since the chance of precipitation is
somewhat low and the area that is most likely going to see moderate
accumulating snow is generally above 3,000 feet will hold off on any
sort of winter weather advisory. Other mountainous weather will be
the breezy conditions overnight as the low level winds out of the
northwest pushes into the area. Model soundings show wind speeds of
around 40-50 knots at 850mb, so with the northwest orientation the
mountain wave winds are more likely on the North Carolina side of
the mountains, but with winds that strong we should still see
advisory criteria winds up in the mountains of Tennessee.

The more widespread winter impact will be the near/below freezing
temperatures expected tonight (and especially tomorrow night). The
forecast for tonight calls for temperatures near or just above
freezing across the entire forecast area. Instead of trying to play
cute with which specific counties might freeze and which might not,
have played it safe and gone with a freeze warning across the entire
area (outside of the mountains). Think at least some part of every
county will get below freezing tonight, and with this being the
first time temperatures have gotten this cold since many of the
local plants have started growing, wanted to play it on the safe
side. Just for reference the last time each of the climate sites got
below freezing:

 KTYS - March 9 (31)
 KTRI - March 29 (32)

Trying to forecast the frost potential is much trickier because the
winds should remain somewhat breezy overnight, which should inhibit
frost formation... But have put in some patchy frost in the river
valleys and other low lying areas that might miss out on the
winds... Am not super confident on frost forming even in these
locations, but again wanted to play it "better safe than sorry."

Tomorrow should be a quiet weather day, except for the cold weather
with highs only expected to be in the 40's, but some sunshine should
hopefully warm the spirits.

.Long Term (Thursday night through Wednesday)...

The main message for the long term is the unseasonably cold
temperatures for Thursday night and Friday night. The coldest night
will be Thursday with lows ranging from the low-to-mid 20s. Lows
Thursday night will drop to near record lows for the date. TRI is
likely to break its record, which is 27, the forecast low is 24.
Records at CHA and TYS (25 and 24 respectively) should be safe but
will get within a couple degrees. A few degrees warmer on Friday
night with lows in the mid-to-upper 20s. These lows will be roughly
15 to 18 degrees below normal. A freeze watch is in effect for
Thursday night.

The rest of the forecast is dry with warming temps. High pressure
begins to build back in on Friday and moreso over the weekend. Highs
on Friday will range from the mid 40s to near 50. Our biggest warmup
comes over the weekend as heights rise with the advancing high.
Highs on Saturday back around 60 and into the mid 60s by Sunday.

Temps continue to climb through the rest of the week due to ridging
in place. We are quickly back into the low-to-mid 70s by Tuesday and
mid-to-upper 70s by Wednesday. Our next system comes at the end of
the period as a front approaches. The best chances for rain look
like it will come just after this long term period.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for portions of southwest North
Carolina...east Tennessee and southwest Virginia.

.DAY ONE...This Afternoon and Tonight

A cold airmass will move into the area tonight with a light
accumulation of snow across higher elevations by Thursday morning.
Northwest winds will bring in unseasonably low wind chill
temperatures by late tonight with 20s lower elevations and teens
higher elevations. A wind advisory is in effect for the southern
Appalachian Mountains tonight into tomorrow for winds over 30
mph.

A freeze warning is in effect tonight for the entire eastern
Tennessee Valley. Temperatures are expected to get near or just
below freezing early tomorrow morning.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Tuesday

A cold airmass will be remain over the region Thursday through
Friday night. Below freezing temperatures are expected over the
northern part of East Tennessee and southwest Virginia Thursday
morning. Much colder temperatures with a hard freeze over all but
the extreme southern Tennessee Valley will occur Friday morning.
Saturday morning lows will again be below freezing but slightly
warmer than Friday morning.
