.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Friday)

Although benign conditions to start this forecast period, active
weather is inbound, but even within this short-term period,
confidence remains on the lower side in terms of how it will all
ultimately end up coming to fruition. Multiple challenges,
including antecedent dry conditions and model initialization
issues, are contributing to the lack of confidence specifically
with respect to precip chances and QPF.

Leaned away from the GFS and a bit more on other model guidance
since the GFS seemed to be struggling the most with the ongoing
convection/precip upstream (primarily MN). The GFS was also more
of an outlier compared to other model guidance, keeping much of
the U.P. generally dry through tomorrow. Plus, echoes are already
appearing on radar in the west/along the WI border, although
current obs are indicating it isn't reaching the ground. But,
considering how PoPs have been far overdone as of late, this dry
scenario that the GFS is depicting can't be entirely ruled out.
So, going back to the confidence piece, have capped PoPs at no
higher than likelies, with widespread chance tonight into
tomorrow, accounting for the drier possibility, but even this
could be overdone.

As for QPF, very favorable PWATs will be/are advecting into the
region, supporting the potential for moderate to locally heavy
rainfall. In terms of how widespread these higher amounts will be,
again, that will be solely dependent on those aforementioned
PoPs. Some embedded thunder could be possible, particularly as
higher instability values advect in from the SW tomorrow.

Where there is higher confidence is in the temperatures and
dewpoints/RHs. Both lows tonight and highs tomorrow will be
moderated by cloud cover, with lows generally in the 50s most
locations, some 60s along the lakeshores, and highs tomorrow
cooler than today, ranging from the 60s into the 70s. With the
aforementioned moisture advecting in, expect humid conditions
even if it doesn't precipitate.

.LONG TERM...(Friday night through Thursday)

Forecast trends continue to suggest rain shower and thunderstorm
activity being possible for Upper Michigan of this weekend as a
upper level trough, a couple shortwaves, and surface fronts progress
through the region. Next week, dry conditions are mainly expected.
High temperatures through the period generally look to be in the 70s
and quiet pleasant, at least next week; Saturday and Sunday do look
to be warmer and humid until the cold front passes. Overnight lows
should be on the warm side this weekend, but after the warm air
advection and moist conditions exit the region, overnight temps
should fall back into the high 40s and 50s in the interior and near
60F by the lakeshores.

Starting off Friday night, continued isentropic lift and upper level
diffluence, with the passage of a shortwave toward the northwest and
surface warm front will result in continued widespread shower
activity across the region. The 12z guidance still highlights some
uncertainty in the exact timing of the frontal passage, but they
generally suggest to have the front lift through by early Saturday
morning. Rainfall should come to an end after the frontal passage.
With PWATs still expected to climb above 1.5 inches, the deep warm
layer, embedded thunderstorm potential, and frontal forcing should
be enough that some places could get some moderate to heavy
rainfall.

Saturday continues to appear to be mostly dry. Continued warm air
advection and dewpoints climbing near 70F will support growing
instability ahead of an approaching cold front. With a pronounced
cap in place over much of the region, thunderstorm activity will
depend on upstream development more closely tied to the frontal
boundary over Minnesota. Guidance right now suggests a line of
thunderstorms developing upstream and tracking eastward into
Wisconsin, and maybe parts of the western UP overnight. Some storms
could have the potential to be severe, but the general idea is for
storms to wane through the night as instability wanes. The main
boundary looks to move eastward through the region during the day on
Sunday. Expect shower activity to end after the frontal passage,
with some thunderstorm activity again being possible out ahead of
it, mainly in the east.

Following the frontal passage, some cold air advection and pressure
rises could support some gusty westerly winds, especially in the
Keweenaw, where gusts could approach 30 mph by late afternoon.

A weak secondary trough may follow early Monday, but after that,
expect high pressure to begin building in from the west. With the
high progged to dominate the region through much of next week, a
mainly dry early and mid week is expected.

Relatively benign weather conditions to start this TAF period will
deteriorate tonight as low clouds and rain showers enter into
Upper Michigan. Winds will also be on the increase with a
primarily easterly component, particularly at KCMX. There is still
ample uncertainty in terms of the specifics of just how low visbys
and ceilings will get, especially considering that there is at
least one model indicating a dry forecast for the entire period
across the U.P., with all of them struggling to adequately capture
the initial conditions/ongoing weather scenario upstream.
Should precip occur as currently anticipated, it will be on/off
type activity. Confidence in lightning occurring is even lower, so
left that mention out for this issuance.

NE winds will be on the increase tonight, with gusts approaching
30 knots in the west half, and around 25 knots in the east half.
By tomorrow, gusts everywhere across the lake could easily approach
30 knots, remaining elevated into tomorrow night. Mariners can
then anticipate a brief reprieve on Saturday with winds tapering
off to less than 20 knots before 15+ sustained winds return by
early Sunday from primarily out of the WSW to SW. Once the
responsible low moves off to the N and E and the pressure
gradient relaxes, less than 20 knot winds prevail Monday through
mid-week.

Thunderstorms will be possible late tonight in the western
portions of the lake, overspreading elsewhere tomorrow well into
the first two-thirds of the weekend. Saturday night in particular
could see the better chances for lightning and other associated
hazards impacting the lake.

to heavy rainfall will be possible Friday.

On Friday, there will be a high swim risk for the Lake Superior
beaches of Marquette County and also for the Lake Michigan
beaches of Schoolcraft County.
