.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)

A busy weather period the next 24 hours will continue to unfold with
cloudy, cool, and rainy conditions for several areas...
Current MSAS Analysis shows a cold front draped across the southern
fringe of the Upper Peninsula from ne to sw, and a warm front
advancing northward on the backside of this cold front. This warm
front extends further to the sw where the surface low currently over
KS continues to advance slowly toward the western Great Lakes as of
8Z this morning. Isentropic lift/ascent, water vapor moisture
advection from the warm conveyor belt portion of jet stream, and
interacting frontal boundaries are resulting in light rain showers
occurring over the cwa.
Prior to the onset of cloud cover over the Keweenaw and western tier
of Upper Michigan, the mostly clear skies allowed temperatures to
drop below freezing behind the cold front...into the upper 20s. The
northward advancing cloud deck has assisted with an increase in
surface temperatures overnight back to observations above the
freezing mark. This should assist with precipitation staying as
rainfall as WAA aloft will keep the precipitation as rain, but can't
rule out a narrow window of rain/snow mix this morning where
localized areas have colder temperatures below freezing realized.
Cloud cover, wind direction, and rain showers will cause highly
varying surface temperatures from this morning through afternoon
across Upper Michigan. East winds will shift to northeasterly
winds... so areas nearest Lake Superior adjacent to nearby shoreline
areas will see winds on the order of 10 to 20mph by afternoon. This
cool onshore flow will limit afternoon high temperatures in those
areas. Further inland however, warm air advection will occur, where
850mb temperatures will warm from 3C to 6C, especially in the east
half. This will allow warmer daytime highs into potentially the
lower to mid 50s to occur across interior Upper Michigan as a warm
front lifts into the area. As this warm front lifts north of the
region and becomes somewhat stationary, a brief period of reduced
rain shower activity will occur this afternoon until early evening.
The abundant moisture associated with the surface low will advect
further into the region late this evening into the overnight hours.
The weather system will become occluded in the process of moving
from the Central Rolling Plains this morning to the northeast toward
the western Great Lakes. Surface low placement will likely be near
the WI/MN southern state border by Wednesday morning. As the surface
low slowly tracks to the northeast, rain showers will become
prevalent, with several areas across Upper Michigan seeing up to a
half inch of liquid precipitation. Additionally, the upslope nature
of the e/ene wind direction off the lakes will cause patchy fog to
develop also tonight into Wednesday morning. This could cause some
sharp reductions in visibility for those commuting Wednesday
morning. Overall, the area will receive some much needed moisture
between today and Wednesday.
.LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Monday)

The main focus for the long term period will be the surface low
lifting northward from the Central Plains, which model consensus has
reaching central Upper Michigan late Wednesday and then lifting ne
of Lake Superior late Wednesday night. This low will bring much
needed rainfall to the area late tonight into Wednesday.
Precipitation from the system could total as much as a half inch
central and east to nearly three-quarters of an inch to the west.
Expect rain to taper to scattered light rain showers changing to
light snow showers Wed night as colder air wraps in behind the
system as it lifts off to the ne. Any snow accumulation behind the
system Wed night will be minimal (inch or less) and confined to
mainly the far western U.P.
Another shortwave will approach the Upper Great Lakes late Thursday
into Friday and deterministic models are coming into general
agreement on the track of the low which consensus has tracking
through the Detroit area on Friday. With this track, light pcpn from
the system would either brush the far east and southeast portions of
the cwa or stay completely east of the area Thu night into Fri. At
any rate, no more than current slight chc pops are warranted.
As Friday's shortwave moves east late in the day there will be
another shortwave and associated cold front which will be moving
through the area late Saturday and Saturday night, which will bring
another chance of pcpn mostly in the form of light snow showers
Saturday afternoon and evening and probably a shot of some light nw
flow LES later Sat night into Sunday with a push of CAA and h85
temps lowering to -14 to -15C behind front.
The weekend shortwave will move east late Sun night/early Monday
with a prominent mid-level ridge and associated sfc high pressure
building into the area on Monday with dry conditions. Deterministic
models show significant differences on timing/strength of next
shortwave and associated front from the west. The 00z GFS and
Canadian models are more aggressive displacing the mid-level ridge
with next shortwave and moving the associated front through the area
Mon night/early Tue with another round of mixed pcpn. The 00Z ECMWF
indicates prominent ridging will persist over area longer due to a
blocking low over New England and is weaker and much more delayed
with the frontal boundary bringing maybe some scattered mixed pcpn
into the area late Tue night.
As for temperatures, readings will still be above average on
Wednesday with highs in the 40s to lower 50s in the warm sector of
the approaching Plains system and then cool down perhaps slightly
below average with CAA behind the system Thursday and Friday with
readings in the 30s to lower 40s. Temps will rebound mostly into the
40s on Saturday before lowering back down into the 30s to lower 40s
on Sunday behind the weekend frontal system.

Low cigs anticipated by this afternoon for all terminals with the
oncoming weather system and extended rain showers likely today into
Wednesday. VFR/MVFR flight conditions will fluctuate at IWD this
morning until more persistent rain showers lower cigs to MVFR/IFR
for IWD by this afternoon. IFR/LIFR can be expected for CMX and SAW
throughout the period as rain showers and east to northeast winds
are expected of 12 knots or less.

Wind gusts will be below 20 knots through mid-afternoon today. As a
low pressure system moves northeast from the Central Rolling Plains
throughout today, this will result in winds veering around to NE and
increasing to 20-30 kts, greatest over the western third of the
lake. Low-end gales of 35-40 kts over the west half late tonight
through Wednesday evening are anticipated. Winds will decrease to 20-
30 kts from the N-NW Wednesday night behind the low which lifts ne
of the lake. Winds become lighter and N-NE on Thu before increasing
NE to 25 knots Thu night into Friday as another system tracks from
the southern Plains into the Great Lakes. A new weather system
tracks through the area during the weekend, resulting in possible N-
NW gales on Sunday of 35-40 kts as CAA occurs behind a cold front.
