.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Tuesday)

WV imagery and RAP analysis indicated a broad mid/upper level
trough through the Rockies and a downstream ridge over the eastern
CONUS resulting in southwest flow toward the northern Great
Lakes. A shortwave trough from near James Bay to the MN arrowhead
was lifting off to the northeast. At the surface, a weak front
extended from eastern Upper Michigan into north central WI while
high pressure building from MN into western Upper Michigan was
bringing mostly clear skies.
Tonight, WAA and 285k-290k isentropic ascent will increase overnight
along and north of a slowly advancing 850 mb front and nearly
stationary surface frontal boundary over northern WI. Light
rainfall amounts of a tenth of an inch or less are expected given
the modest moisture inflow and availability. With min temps in the
mid to upper 30s, no freezing pcpn is expected.
Tuesday, the rain band into central Upper Michigan will lift
northward during the morning with a lull in the pcpn until rain
increases again toward the late afternoon as isentropic lift and
stronger moisture transport moves in as the mid level and sfc
advance toward southwest IA. Temps will remain above average with
highs in the lower 50s south and east. However, northeast winds will
keep readings in the lower 40s near Lake Superior.
.LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Monday)

The main focus for the long term period will be the surface low
lifting northward from the Central Plains, which model consensus has
reaching central Upper Michigan late Wednesday and then lifting ne
of Lake Superior late Wednesday night. This low will bring much
needed rainfall to the area late tonight into Wednesday.
Precipitation from the system could total as much as a half inch
central and east to nearly three-quarters of an inch to the west.
Expect rain to taper to scattered light rain showers changing to
light snow showers Wed night as colder air wraps in behind the
system as it lifts off to the ne. Any snow accumulation behind the
system Wed night will be minimal (inch or less) and confined to
mainly the far western U.P.
Another shortwave will approach the Upper Great Lakes late Thursday
into Friday and deterministic models are coming into general
agreement on the track of the low which consensus has tracking
through the Detroit area on Friday. With this track, light pcpn from
the system would either brush the far east and southeast portions of
the cwa or stay completely east of the area Thu night into Fri. At
any rate, no more than current slight chc pops are warranted.
As Friday's shortwave moves east late in the day there will be
another shortwave and associated cold front which will be moving
through the area late Saturday and Saturday night, which will bring
another chance of pcpn mostly in the form of light snow showers
Saturday afternoon and evening and probably a shot of some light nw
flow LES later Sat night into Sunday with a push of CAA and h85
temps lowering to -14 to -15C behind front.
The weekend shortwave will move east late Sun night/early Monday
with a prominent mid-level ridge and associated sfc high pressure
building into the area on Monday with dry conditions. Deterministic
models show significant differences on timing/strength of next
shortwave and associated front from the west. The 00z GFS and
Canadian models are more aggressive displacing the mid-level ridge
with next shortwave and moving the associated front through the area
Mon night/early Tue with another round of mixed pcpn. The 00Z ECMWF
indicates prominent ridging will persist over area longer due to a
blocking low over New England and is weaker and much more delayed
with the frontal boundary bringing maybe some scattered mixed pcpn
into the area late Tue night.
As for temperatures, readings will still be above average on
Wednesday with highs in the 40s to lower 50s in the warm sector of
the approaching Plains system and then cool down perhaps slightly
below average with CAA behind the system Thursday and Friday with
readings in the 30s to lower 40s. Temps will rebound mostly into the
40s on Saturday before lowering back down into the 30s to lower 40s
on Sunday behind the weekend frontal system.

deteriorating to IFR on Tue morning with some pcpn moving in and

further to LIFR/VLIFR on Tue with northeast upslope flow with rain
and fog at SAW.

Light and variable winds of 15 knots or less expected across the
lake into this evening as weak high pressure builds into the
area. By Tuesday, a low pressure system moving northeast from the
Central Plains will result in winds veering around to NE and
increasing to 20-30 kts, greatest over the western third of the
lake. NE winds may even reach low-end gale force gusts over the
west end late Tuesday and Tuesday night before slowing diminishing
and backing northerly on Wed as the low lifts over the lake. N-NW
increase again to 25-30 knots on Wed night behind the low which
lifts ne of the lake. Winds become lighter and N-NE on Thu before
increasing NE to 25 knots Thu night into Friday as another system
tracks from the southern Plains into the Great Lakes.
