Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Marquette MI
437 AM EST Sun Dec 19 2021
.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 353 AM EST SUN DEC 19 2021
LES ongoing early this morning has been tapering off for portions
of areas within the NW to WNW wind belts, and will continue to be
the trend as the day gets underway. WAA will take over with Srly
to SWrly winds prevailing for the latter half of the day, ensuring
the cutting off of LES.
Low pressure system traversing far northern Ontario later today
into tonight will bring with it the local chances for additional
precip. There will be two distinctive areas in terms of driving
forces for precip: the Lake Michigan side, and then the northern
into eastern portions of the U.P. Starting with the former,
fetching off Lake Michigan under the WAA regime looks to open up
the opportunity for precip chances entering into Schoolcraft and
Luce counties later today. Then for the latter, precip chances
enter into the western U.P. tonight, grazing across the Keweenaw
Peninsula and Lake Superior shoreline before making its way into
the eastern U.P. Generally, snow is expected as the dominant
precip type, but with said WAA, enough warm nosing aloft could
allow for mixed precip types near and along the Lake Michigan
shoreline into the far east. Elsewhere, expect any snow that falls
to be fairly wet with low SLRs. Overall though, any accumulations
will be light, if at all; much of the area is accounted for
via flurries mention.
Highs today remain near normal for mid-December, ranging from the
mid 20s in the interior to around 30 along the lakeshores. Expect
a non-diurnal temperature curve early tonight before CAA starts
making its way back into Upper Michigan late tonight. Lows should
eventually drop into the upper teens in portions of the interior
west, but remaining elevated, in the 20s to around the 30 degree
mark in the central and east.
.LONG TERM...(Monday through Saturday)
Issued at 312 AM EST SUN DEC 19 2021
The past few runs of the guidance suite hasn't really resulted in
any noticeable changes in the forecast for this extended package.
Overall, no big impactful systems are expected to move through the
Upper Great Lakes through the coming week, but there could be an
overachieving clipper system that could produce some advisory level
snow Tuesday.
A low pressure progressing through Ontario and into Quebec early
Monday will drop a cold front through the region by afternoon.
Moisture is limited, and the little forcing that's accompanying the
front will largely stay north of the forecast area. With that said
though, the eastern portions in our region could see some light snow
before more widespread lake effect showers develop across the
northwest wind belts. Given the limited surface moisture though, I
don't suspect much in the way of snow accumulations in the short
window between the cyclonic flow ending and the building ridge.
This ridge is expected to move into the region overnight Monday.
Coupled with a colder airmass aloft and light winds, expecting a
good radiational cooling night. Lows in the west half look to dip
into the single digits, maybe even below zero in some of the
traditional colder spots, and low teens in the east and by the
lakeshores. This high pressure will continue eastward through
Tuesday morning followed by a quickly moving low through the region
for the remainder of the day. This clipper looks to be the best shot
we have in this forecast package for some more widespread snow and
is something to watch in the coming forecast packages. Generally 1
to 3 inches looks possible among the 0z deterministic suite, but I
suspect snow ratios may be higher then expected given the decent
residence time within the DGZ. This could equate to higher snow
amounts. This potential is also backed up by SREF plumes across the
region. Guidance is suggesting some lake enhancement off Lake
Michigan could also aid snow production, and winter headlines may
end up being needed. Lake effect snow looks to follow the system's
cold front through at least mid day Wednesday, with it gradually
ending from west to east with the next high building in.
From there, guidance begins to diverge some, but initial thinking is
another shortwave passing to the north of Lake Superior may support
some light snow Thursday. Initial thoughts for the Christmas weekend
do include an opportunity for widespread snow as a system moves into
the Great Lakes region. However, given the obvious spread among the
GEFS and GEPS members, confidence is low at the moment.

.AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Sunday night)
Issued at 1211 AM EST SUN DEC 19 2021
Expect MVFR conditions at KIWD and KCMX in light -shsn and lake
clouds to improve to VFR by late morning as winds back from
northwest to southwest and push lake effect showers offshore.
Expect VFR conditions through the period at KSAW.
&&
.MARINE...(For the 4 AM Lake Superior forecast issuance)
Issued at 427 AM EST SUN DEC 19 2021
SW winds will be on the increase today across the lake, eventually
ramping up to gales tonight. Gales should top out around 40 knots.
There will then be a brief reprieve in the gales early Monday
before WNWrly gales emerge for the later half of Monday, mainly
across the east half of the Great Lake of Superior. By early
Tuesday, the winds will have slackened to below 25 knots, but
again, only a brief reprieve as a few NW gale-force gusts look to
be possible overnight Tuesday. Once those drop off below 25 knots
by midday Wednesday, conditions across the lake look to be
somewhat benign wind-wise until next weekend.
