.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 353 AM EST SUN DEC 19 2021

LES ongoing early this morning has been tapering off for portions
of areas within the NW to WNW wind belts, and will continue to be
the trend as the day gets underway. WAA will take over with Srly
to SWrly winds prevailing for the latter half of the day, ensuring
the cutting off of LES.

Low pressure system traversing far northern Ontario later today
into tonight will bring with it the local chances for additional
precip. There will be two distinctive areas in terms of driving
forces for precip: the Lake Michigan side, and then the northern
into eastern portions of the U.P. Starting with the former,
fetching off Lake Michigan under the WAA regime looks to open up
the opportunity for precip chances entering into Schoolcraft and
Luce counties later today. Then for the latter, precip chances
enter into the western U.P. tonight, grazing across the Keweenaw
Peninsula and Lake Superior shoreline before making its way into
the eastern U.P. Generally, snow is expected as the dominant
precip type, but with said WAA, enough warm nosing aloft could
allow for mixed precip types near and along the Lake Michigan
shoreline into the far east. Elsewhere, expect any snow that falls
to be fairly wet with low SLRs. Overall though, any accumulations
will be light, if at all; much of the area is accounted for
via flurries mention.

Highs today remain near normal for mid-December, ranging from the
mid 20s in the interior to around 30 along the lakeshores. Expect
a non-diurnal temperature curve early tonight before CAA starts
making its way back into Upper Michigan late tonight. Lows should
eventually drop into the upper teens in portions of the interior
west, but remaining elevated, in the 20s to around the 30 degree
mark in the central and east.

.LONG TERM...(Monday night through Sunday)

Upper air pattern will consist of a 500 mb low off the west coast
and a broad and flat trough across the northern U.S. 00z Tue. A
shortwave moves into the upper Great Lakes later on Tue. Deeper
moisture and dynamics move in on Tue and move out Tue night.
Did not make many changes to the going forecast except lingered some
pops in for lake effect snow showers Tue night into Wed.

In the extended, the GFS and ECMWF show a 500 mb trough on the west
coast 12z Thu with a shortwave in the upper Great Lakes region.
Troughing moves into the Rockies 12z Fri with a shortwave affecting
the upper Great Lakes 12z Sat. Troughing moves onto the west coast
12z Sun. Active and fast pattern will continue with weak systems
passing through the area for this forecast period. Temperatures will
be above normal for this forecast period.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Monday afternoon)

VFR conditions will persist through this evening at all terminals.
As a low pressure system approaches and passes to the north of Lake
Superior tonight, a period of LLWS is possible at all terminals. As
an associated cold front crosses the UP behind the low, LLWS will
come to an end with gusty conditions prevailing through Monday
afternoon. Conditions will fall into MVFR behind the cold front,
with light snow chances at CMX and SAW. There could be a small
window of -fzdz at CMX late tonight, early tomorrow morning.

SW winds will be on the increase today across the lake, eventually
ramping up to gales tonight. Gales should top out around 40 knots.
There will then be a brief reprieve in the gales early Monday
before WNWrly gales emerge for the later half of Monday, mainly
across the east half of the Great Lake of Superior. By early
Tuesday, the winds will have slackened to below 25 knots, but
again, only a brief reprieve as a few NW gale-force gusts look to
be possible overnight Tuesday. Once those drop off below 25 knots
by midday Wednesday, conditions across the lake look to be
somewhat benign wind-wise until next weekend.
