.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Tuesday)
Issued at 408 PM EST MON NOV 29 2021

This Evening...
Current synoptic setup consists of an area of low pressure
centered over southern Minnesota and a very weak upper wave
dropping into the upper Great Lakes Region. Light snow continues
to drift across the forecast area at this time with the best
isentropic lift focused over the WI/MI border. That isentropic
lift does, however, start to quickly wane by this evening.
Nonetheless, expect an additional quick 1 to 2 inches along the
border through the evening hours with snow quickly ending over the
far western counties.

Tonight...
Snow will continue to taper off from west to east with a
minimal lake effect threat over the Keweenaw Peninsula early Tuesday
morning.  Decent cold advection from a passing cold front will
especially affect the usual cold areas with overnight lows dipping
into the teens over the higher elevations.

Tuesday...
Weak subsidence will keep conditions dry late in the short term
period. But, the main focus for Tuesday will be the uptick in
northwest winds. Sustained speeds will top off in the 15 to 20 kt
range over land, while the lake winds will reach gale warning
criteria. Expect sustained speeds of 20 to 25 kts with gusts up to
35 kts.

.LONG TERM...(Tuesday night through Monday)
Issued at 358 PM EST MON NOV 29 2021

Not much has changed in the extended period with a prolonged period
of clippers embedded within WNW flow aloft. Each clipper brings a
narrow swath of generally light synoptic snow to the area and
some light LES behind each system. Temperatures warm above
seasonal normals on Wednesday into Thursday before trending below
normal late Thursday through the weekend.

Starting at 00z Wednesday, gusty NW winds will be decreasing with
some lingering LES showers also coming to an end across the east.
WAA moves in ahead of the next clipper system with snow showers
developing by 12z across the west. WAA continues and spreads east
across the entire CWA on Wednesday with temperatures likely to
warm above freezing. It is possible that the boundary layer
inversion ends up being sharper than currently modeled if there is
some fresh snowfall Wednesday morning, but p-type should
transition to rain by Wednesday afternoon. WAA continues overnight
as a ~990mb surface low tracks across Ontario. As a result, temps
may struggle to cool below freezing, especially in the downslope
areas near Lake Superior.

The cold front associated with the Ontario low moves through during
the day on Thursday returning temperatures to near or below normal
values. NWerly gales and some LES are possible on Thursday into
Thursday night, especially across the east. Dry mid-levels and
shallow inversion heights should limit LES impacts. Friday looks
mostly dry, but WAA ahead of the next clipper may spread light
snow across the area by Saturday morning. Considerable uncertainty
exists with the low pressure track, but the post-frontal LES
environment looks favorable on Saturday. Much taller inversion and
lake-850 mb delta-Ts increasing toward 20C suggest potential for
a more moderate period of LES. A surface ridge axis moves overhead
Saturday night, which should bring a gradual end to LES. Ensemble
spread increases considerably on Sunday with ensemble means
indicating potential for a Central Plains trough developing early
next week.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Tuesday afternoon)
Issued at 100 PM EST MON NOV 29 2021
Considerable variation across the TAF sites is occurring this
afternoon as snow spreads from west to east across the forecast
area.  CMX has briefly improved to VFR at this time, whereas IWD is
still at IFR levels with light snow.  Elsewhere, expect conditions
to deteriorate at SAW over the next several hours as that swath of
snow infiltrates the area.  Expect snow to quickly taper off through
the evening hours.  Nonetheless, persistent MVFR/IFR conditions are
expected to return to all TAF sites by this evening, continuing
through the night. Meanwhile, winds through the period will start
out southeasterly, veering to the northwest through the course of
the TAF period. Sustained speeds will generally be in the 5 to 10 kt
range, increasing to 12 to 16 kts with gusts to 24 kts at IWD late
in the period.

.MARINE...(For the 4 PM Lake Superior forecast issuance)

Southwest winds will stay below 20 kts until veering to the west and
increasing early Tuesday morning behind a cold front.  Winds will
eventually shift to the northwest on Tuesday, becoming strong by
late afternoon and evening especially over the eastern half.  As a
result, a gale warning is in effect for the eastern half on Tuesday
as sustained speeds top off near 30 kts with gale force gusts up to
35 to 40 kts.  Winds will finally fall below 35 kts on Tuesday
evening with little impact on Tuesday night.  Wednesday, expect
southwest winds of 25 to 30 kts before decreasing and veering to the
north/northwest from Thursday through Friday. Wind gusts will
increase to 25 kts again on Saturday from the northwest.
