.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 244 AM EST MON NOV 29 2021

Upper air pattern consists of a 500 mb trough over the lower Great
Lakes this morning with a shortwave over central Saskatchewan which
will affect the area this afternoon and another that will move in
later tonight. Deeper moisture and 850-500 mb q-vector convergence
move in later this morning and move out tonight. Did keep the slower
trend of progression of pops moving in for this forecast and did
speed up tonight the exit of pops out of the west. Does not look
cold enough for lake effect pcpn to start until really late tonight
and that is pushing it as 850 mb temperatures drop to -5C late
tonight and with Lake Superior being around 5C, not really enough
for lake enhancement. With lingering moisture though, slight chance
pops in west facing upslope areas is possible and have that in.
Otherwise, did not make too many changes to the going forecast.
Looks like a 1-3 inch snow over the area with the heaviest amounts
along the WI boder and the far south.

.LONG TERM...(Monday night through Sunday)

Ridging across the west-central CONUS and troughing along the East
Coast prevails throughout the long-term period. Locally, this
results in a prolonged period of WNW flow aloft with a series of low-
amplitude clipper systems tracking across the Great Lakes region.
The three most noteworthy shortwaves bring synoptic scale precip to
our area Monday afternoon through Tuesday morning, Wednesday into
Thursday, and then again on Friday. Overall, temperatures trend
above normal by Tuesday with near normal precipitation.

Light synoptic scale snow should be ongoing (especially east half)
at 00Z Tuesday associated with WAA ahead of the surface low tracking
east across the CWA. There may be some lake-enhancement off Lake MI
in the SW wind snow belts with inversion heights around 5kft and
lake-850mb delta-Ts between 16-18C. However, any SW lake effect
should be transient as winds quickly back WNWerly behind the surface
low. There may be a brief lull in snowfall Tuesday morning between
synoptic and lake effect precip regimes when a period of fzdz is
possible, especially for higher elevations favored by upslope NW
flow. CAA intensifies behind a secondary cold front with inversion
heights increasing to ~6kft (west) and ~8kft (east) as 850 mb
temperatures cool to around -10C by midday Tuesday. This more
favorable LES environment may only persist for 4-8 hours at any one
location until mid-level drying and subsidence brings an end to LES
from west to east by Tuesday evening.

A more dynamic trough approaches our CWA Wednesday morning as an
impressive 160+ knot jet streak noses onto the Northern Plains.
NAEFS guidance indicates an impressive plume of Pacific moisture
with integrated water vapor transport values exceeding the 90th
percentile across our CWA for Wednesday into Thursday. Considerable
model spread remains with regard to precip onset timing and surface
low track/evolution. Faster precip onset is preferred at this time
considering the fast flow aloft advecting a seasonably rich plume of
moisture into the CWA. Operational 12z guidance (especially the 12z
GFS) indicates two shortwaves embedded within the broader trough.
The 12z GEFS supports this idea with a surface low cluster (>1000mb)
near our western border at 12z Wednesday and a deeper secondary
surface low (<1000 mb) tracking east across the Upper Great Lakes
between 00z and 12z Thursday.

Irrespective of the exact surface low track/evolution, precip begins
as WAA increases across our area on Wednesday. Precip is expected to
begin as snow, but WAA may be sufficient for p-types to mix with or
completely transition to rain by Wednesday afternoon. Snow once
again becomes the dominant p-type by Thursday morning as CAA spreads
across the CWA. Substantial model differences exist with the
magnitude of cold air behind the system with 850 mb temps around -7C
on Euro vs -16C on GFS with the Canadian in the middle. Taking the
middle of the road approach suggests light LES should be expected
for the NW wind snow belts on Thursday.

The active weather patterns continues into this weekend as another
low-amplitude NW flow system tracks through the Upper Great Lakes on
Friday and a deeper system could move through late next weekend.
Considering the number of systems moving through between now and
then, discussion of potential impacts is an exercise in futility.

.AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Monday night)

Sfc high pres ridge will move across Upper MI overnight thru the
morning hrs. As the ridge passes, winds will back to the sw to s,
bringing an end to lake effect stratocu/MVFR cigs streaming off of
Lake Superior. Clearing to VFR has already occurred at IWD. Expect
MVFR cigs to clear out at CMX mid morning and at SAW prior to
daybreak. During the day today, the next disturbance will approach,
spreading a swath of -sn from w to e across Upper MI. All terminals
should see conditions fall quickly to IFR soon after the snow
begins. The snow should arrive at IWD by late morning, at CMX early
aftn and at SAW mid aftn. Although the snow will end during the
evening, IFR conditions will largely persist due to low cigs
lingering after the snow ends. However, CMX may improve to low MVFR.

The wind stays below 20 knots into tonight before increasing to the
west to 30 knots late tonight behind a cold front. Northwesterly
winds to 30 knots with gale force gusts to 35 to 40 knots are
expected on Tue, especially across the eastern half and will go with
a gale warning. Southwest winds increase to 20 knots for Wednesday
then veer northwesterly 25 to 30 knots for Thursday before falling
below 20 knots Thursday night into Friday.

...WET, DENSE SNOW EXPECTED ON MONDAY...

Wet, dense snow is expected to accumulate across much of Upper
Michigan Monday into Monday evening. The snow will begin over far
western Upper Michigan by late morning and will spread east
across central Upper Michigan through the afternoon hours,
reaching Newberry toward sunset. A couple to a few inches of snow
accumulation is anticipated, potentially causing hazardous travel,
notably within any areas of moderate snow that occurs. Motorists
should be aware of the deteriorating conditions from west to east
throughout the day on Monday into Monday evening and plan
accordingly. Please allow for extra time to reach destinations and
leave plenty of space between vehicles. Those shoveling should
also be aware of the added exertion due to the wetness of the snow
expected.

Light to occasionally moderate snow is expected to accumulate
along the Wisconsin border today. The snow will begin over far
western Upper Michigan by late morning and will last into the late
afternoon. Up to 3 inches of snow is expected by late afternoon,
potentially causing hazardous travel. Motorists should be aware
that the roads will become slippery by late this morning and
should drive accordingly. Please allow for extra time to reach
destinations and leave plenty of space between vehicles.
