.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure briefly builds in from the north today. A dynamic
storm system will approach from the south tonight, with a warm
front lifting through the area overnight. Then a cold front will
push through the forecast area tomorrow. After another brief
period of high pressure another strong storm system will move
through the region Thursday into Friday. High pressure then
builds over the area this weekend.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
As of 300 AM Mon...Majority of steady rain has now pushed off
the coast, as low pressure pulls away. Areas of light showers
and drizzle will persist overnight as low clouds remain locked
in place. Some patchy fog is also likely to develop given the
moist low levels of the atmosphere. Temperatures should remain
nearly steady in the upper 30s to low 40s.

High pressure will build in at the surface today, however with
warm southwesterly flow aloft, the low level inversion will
remain strong over most of the area, leading to continued
widespread low clouds and cold air damming. Temperatures are not
expected to move much through the day over the coastal plain,
with highs mostly in the low 40s. Closer to the coast, a few
peaks of sun, could allow for slightly more warming, and expect
highs in the upper 40s to around 50. Given the moist low levels,
and continued warm air advection aloft, patchy drizzle or widely
scattered light showers are possible today, with the best
chances being over the coastal plain.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 AM TUESDAY/...
As of 310 AM Mon...Deep longwave trough over the
central US will consolidate as the upper ridge strengthens over
the eastern Atlantic tonight. This will result in a westward
shift of the storm track from recent days, with low pressure
developing over the northern Gulf of Mexico and Deep South
today. This low will then track up the east coast, just west of
the I-95 corridor, with a warm front extending eastward, which
will lift through the area tonight.

The main concern overnight continues to be the threat of severe
weather behind this warm front, as rapid warm advection is
expected to develop with temperatures rising 20 or more degrees
over the span of 6-9 hours. This will bring in rich moisture and
the potential for instability on the order of 1000-1500 J/kg.
Strong dynamics will also be present in the form of 0-6 km shear
60+ kts, and SRH values 300+ m/s2, which will favor supercell
development. This will of course to lead to the threat for all
severe hazards, including damaging wind gusts, hail, and
isolated tornadoes. The two big questions that are unknown at
this time, which will determine the scope and magnitude of the
severe threat tonight, will be the degree of warming across the
area, and how far inland the low level inversion will dissipate
because of this warming.

Shower activity will increase late in the evening from west to
east, with a possible broken line of convection forming and
moving across the area overnight into early Tuesday morning.
Have increasing PoPs overnight, coming up to categorical for a
several hour period early Tuesday morning.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 4 AM Mon...A cold front will push offshore Tuesday morning,
followed by high pressure building in through Wednesday. A strong
frontal system will impact the area Thursday and Friday. High
pressure returns this weekend into early next week.

Tuesday through Wednesday...Guidance has generally sped up the
frontal progression for Tuesday morning with the primary band of
prefrontal moisture now pushing off the Outer Banks around sunrise,
the initial cold front pushing through mid-to-late morning, and a
reinforcing/backdoor cold front Tuesday evening. A few light showers
are possible with the initial front, justifying low end chance POPs
lingering through late Tuesday morning, but dry conditions expected
thereafter. Temperature advection will be modest behind the initial
front, but drier low level air and subsidence aloft will allow skies
to clear by Tuesday afternoon, with temps remaining well above
normal through the day. Stronger CAA arrives with the evening
backdoor front as high pressure building over the Northeast begins
to ridge down the Eastern Seaboard. This ridging will continue to
dominate Wednesday.

Wednesday Night through Friday...A strong shortwave rounding the
base of the broad upper troughing over the eastern US will lift
across the region Thursday and Friday. Developing surface low
pressure associated with this feature will cross the deep south
Wednesday night and Thursday, prompting WAA to begin locally. The
dissipation of the inland wedge during this time is and will likely
remaining uncertain, as guidance is notoriously poor with this
process, but overrunning precip should begin Wednesday night as
strong low level WAA occurs under strengthening mid-level height
falls/broad lift.

The surface low will continue to strengthen as it lifts along the I-
95 corridor Thursday night and Friday. Eastern NC will be squarely
in the warm sector during this time, continuing the chance for
showers and thunderstorms. A strong (60-65 kt) LLJ on the eastern
side of the low will bring very strong low level shear and the
potential for thunderstorm organization/severe weather late Thursday
into Friday as the main line of prefrontal storms crosses the area.
Additionally, sustained winds could be strong, especially along the
coast, and elevated water levels along the northern shores of area
waterways are possible. Winds are expected to subside and the severe
weather and precip chances will end as the cold front crosses the
area later Friday.

Saturday through Monday...High pressure builds in through the
weekend, passing offshore early next week. This will bring a more
settled period with steadily moderating temps.

.AVIATION /08Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Short Term /through Tuesday Morning/...
As of 400 AM Mon...IFR/LIFR conditions are expected to persist
through the TAF period as the low level inversion remains in
place behind a departing area of low pressure. Ceilings should
remain steady around 400-600 ft, with patchy fog between 2-4
miles expected overnight and into tomorrow morning. Visibilities
will improve during the day tomorrow, but low stratus will not
budge. Late this afternoon a few breaks in the clouds are
possible east of the coastal plain, however ceilings are
expected to remain broken or greater. Thereafter, overcast
ceilings return this evening, with fog returning as warm air
advection increases ahead of a warm front. Showers, with some
thunderstorms possible will move into the airspace from the SW
overnight into Tuesday morning, with continued IFR/LIFR
conditions likely.

Long Term /Tuesday through Saturday/...
As of 4 AM Mon...VFR prevails Tuesday. High pressure ridges in
from the north Tuesday night and Wednesday, with moisture
overriding this wedge bringing the potential for reduced
ceilings at times through midweek. The next frontal system
impacts the area Thursday and Friday, bringing the threat for
periods of flight restrictions for both visibility (in showers
and thunderstorms) and lower ceilings.

.MARINE...
Short Term /Today and Tonight/...
As of 400 AM Mon...Small craft conditions continue for the
coastal waters and Pamlico and Albemarle Sounds as winds
continue at N 20-25 kts, with seas 6-9 ft. Winds will subside
later this morning to 15-20 kts, however seas will remain at or
above 6 feet across the coastal waters through the afternoon,
with winds calming further to 5-15 kts.

A strong warm front will approach from the SW this evening, with
winds strengthening rapidly behind it. As a result the Small
craft advisories have been extended for the coastal waters
through the extent of this system, ending Wednesday night. Winds
early tonight increase to S 15-25 kts, and then strengthen
further to SSW 20-30 kts overnight, with seas building to 5-9
ft.

Long Term /Tuesday through Saturday/...
As of 4 AM Mon...Breezy to gusty southerly winds Tuesday morning
become more WSW and gradually subside as a cold front crosses the
waters midday Tuesday. Then, Tuesday evening, a backdoor cold front
crosses the waters, with winds becoming north and possibly surging
to 20-25 kt for several hours. High pressure ridging inland
continues moderate to breezy winds Wednesday and Wednesday night.
Then, a developing low over the Deep South on Thursday will prompt
winds to become southerly, with a strong LLJ bringing gusty to
strong winds Thursday night into Friday as the low passes just
inland, with Gales possible when winds are the strongest Friday
morning.

Seas remain elevated, around 5-8 ft Tuesday before beginning to
subside as southerly swell wanes Tuesday night and Wednesday. SCAs
for the combination of breezy to gusty winds and 6+ ft seas continue
for the coastal waters through Wednesday. Seas begin to increase
again Thursday as southerly windswell quickly builds, with seas
peaking at 8-10+ ft Friday morning.

Hi-res guidance indicates that sea fog is possible Tuesday morning
as a warm and humid airmass is in place ahead of a cold front that
will cross the waters midday. However, breezy S to SW winds during
this time will likely br strong enough to preclude any significant
fog impacts and coverage, and fog has been left out of the official
forecast for now.
