The coming week will be quite an interesting one over the Medford
forecast area. High impact snow events look likely at this
time, with snow levels dropping to some of the west side valley
floors this weekend.
A cutoff low remains off the coast this evening, and a short wave
that ejected from the low is powering a surface front across the
Medford forecast area at this time. Reported precipitation thus
far has been light and most of that has fallen along the coast,
the Coast Range, and in western Siskiyou county. The heaviest
reported amounts are around 0.50 inches along the south coast.
Snow levels are 4000 to 4500 feet with some pockets to 3500 feet
in Northern California. Mt Shasta City, Black Butte Summit and
Siskiyou Summit might see around 1 inch tonight as the
dissipating front pushes farther inland.
A kicker trough will pick up the cutoff low Wednesday, and the now
combined system will approach the coast Wednesday and move onshore
Thursday. Increasing southwest flow aloft will continue to bring
ejecting short waves over the area and several fronts will move
onshore in quick succession during this interval. The greatest
impacts, primarily due to snow, look to be over higher terrain
from the Cascades west Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

The trough will move onshore Thursday into Thursday night along
with another front. This will bring colder air into the area and
snow levels will drop to 2000 to 2500 feet Thursday night into
Friday.
Some of the deterministic models show the front stalling or
slowing over the area with good low level convergence in the mid
levels late Thursday into Friday. Therefore, the snow could very
well continue until the next low pushes into the forecast area
early Friday Christmas Eve.
Long term discussion from the Tuesday afternoon AFD...Friday 24
Dec through Tuesday 28 Dec 2021. The major topics for the long
term are a possible storm late Friday into Saturday with snow
levels around 2000 feet, and a following unusually lengthy episode
of mainly low intensity snowfall Saturday night at least into
Monday with snow levels around 500 to 1000 feet.
The most noteworthy uncertainty in the long term regards the
strength of a front on Friday night/Christmas Eve that is likely to
be the strongest disturbance of several that will bring snow to our
area in the long term. There are a notable minority of ensemble
members that produce light snow with this front, but most are about
evenly split between a moderate/Advisory or strong/Warning snowfall
with the snow level around 2000 feet.
The next round of impactful snow is expected to have a relatively
modest start on Friday with light intensity focused upon the
southern Oregon Cascades from around Lake of the Woods and Prospect
northward to include the Crater Lake, Diamond Lake, and Willamette
Pass region. Friday will begin with snow levels ranging from 2000 to
3000 feet, nudging a few hundred feet higher with the warming of the
day on Christmas.
Lighter showers continue with snow levels dropping to the valley
floors by Sunday morning. The showers are then expected to become
more active with light to moderate snow accumulations possible on
and off through Monday night.

.AVIATION...22/00Z TAFs...A front will near the coast tonight
and move inland on Wednesday bringing rain and mountain snow.
Widespread MVFR cigs/vis and local IFR cigs are expected at the
coast tonight through Wednesday. Inland, areas of MVFR/IFR
conditions and terrain obscurations will increase overnight with
local IFR/LIFR cigs possible in western valleys. Also as winds aloft
increase, mountain wave turbulence is possible east of the Cascades
tonight. As the front moves inland Wednesday morning and afternoon,
expect light to moderate precipitation with widespread MVFR cigs,
areas MVFR vis and local IFR cigs. -CC

.MARINE...Updated 800 PM PST Tuesday, 21 December, 2021...Fresh
southerly swell and wind seas will maintain steep seas in the near
shore waters, and very steep and hazardous seas across the outer
waters tonight into Wednesday morning. The next front will arrive
Wednesday, producing gusty south to southwest winds near gale force,
and widespread very steep seas through Wednesday night. Another
strong front is likely Thursday night into Friday, and this will
mark a general shift in the weather pattern to a much colder one
under westerly flow. Moderate west winds are expected from Friday
onward, with seas becoming swell driven and remaining elevated in
the 12 to 15 ft range at 12 to 14 seconds during this time. -CC
