No major changes to the forecast for this update as the Bootleg
Fire is burning with a fair amount of intensity this morning. We
expect a lot of smoke to fill into the atmosphere over the next
few days given with how much intensity this fire is currently
burning. Therefore, there might be periods of low visibility
down to 6 miles or so over sections of Oregon and northern
California.

.DISCUSSION.../Issued 556 AM PDT Wed Jul 7 2021/
Southwest flow remains over the forecast area this morning at jet
stream level due to a positively tilted low pressure system
centered off of the West Coast. Yesterday's shortwave trough that
pushed through the area has brought a stronger push of marine air
inland this morning to past Roseburg and approaching the western
edge of the Jack Fire near Steamboat. Expectations are for the
marine layer to gradually recede this morning into the afternoon
before making a second lesser run at the coast and Umpqua Basin
tonight into Thursday morning.
For areas inland from the Umpqua Basin and east of the coast
range it's expected to be cooler the next couple of days, but not
by much. This afternoon and evening winds are not expected to be
as strong as they were yesterday. However, it will remain dry and
gusty enough for Red Flag Warning conditions for about a 4 hour
period in portions Modoc County, so a Red Flag Warning has been
issued for there. Elsewhere, such as in the Rogue Valley,
conditions are expected to be close to, but not quite to Red Flag
Warning thresholds.
Friday through early next week the trough offshore is expected to
lift northward as high pressure expands westward from the Desert
Southwest. While exact temperatures will continue to be refined,
it's a safe bet to say we'll be up near calendar records again.
Therefore, the Excessive Heat Watch for the Friday through Monday
period that was issued during the day yesterday continues. The
models indicate minor fluctuations in the heat each day, but the
theme will continue to be hot and very dry.
Ensembles suggest a cool down around mid-month as westerly flow
from the eastern Pacific increases. How much of a cool down we see
will be dependent on the southern extent of an upper level trough
moving southeastward along the northwestern coast of North
America. The range of possibilities appears to be a cool down
that's between calendar day normals and 10 degrees above normal.
Currently, the forecast continues to look dry except for a little
light rain and drizzle along and near the coast.

.AVIATION...For the 07/12Z TAF Cycle...IFR/LIFR conditions along the
coast and MVFR cigs in the Umpqua Basin will persist through this
morning. Conditions will clear to VFR in the Umpqua Basin by late
morning, and stratus will burn back to the beaches during the
morning, with conditions expected to continue improving through the
afternoon. Conditions near and along shore should become mainly VFR,
although stratus will redevelop this evening with LIFR and IFR
pushing from the waters back into the coastal valleys tonight.
Over the remainder of the area...expect VFR conditions, except areas
of MVFR vsbys in wildfire smoke and haze across portions of
southeast Siskiyou County, southern Klamath, and Modoc counties, but
especially from far eastern Douglas County across northern and
eastern Klamath County and Lake County. Additionally, expect gusty
winds across the region this afternoon and evening, though slightly

.MARINE...Updated 200 AM PDT Wednesday 7 July 2021...Relatively calm
conditions will continue through this morning. The thermal trough
redevelops today with gusty north winds and steep wind-driven seas
returning by this afternoon south of Cape Blanco. Steep seas and
advisory conditions will then spread to the north Thursday. Seas
will remain steep Friday into Saturday morning with the strongest
winds and highest seas expected south of Cape Blanco. Gales and very
steep seas are possible during the weekend into early next week as

.FIRE WEATHER...Updated 445 AM PDT Wednesday, 7 July 2021... With
ongoing hotter and drier than normal conditions it will not take
much to push weather conditions to Red Flag Warning levels over the
coming week.
For today, winds do look as if they will be lighter than they were
Tuesday afternoon and evening. However, with single digit RHs
expected across the Modoc, late afternoon and evening gusts of 20 to
25 mph will push conditions into RFW criteria. For other areas,
especially the Rogue Valley of Jackson County, we'll be right on the
cusp of RFW conditions, but wind gusts are unlikely to reach or
surpass the gusts to 20mph+ needed for a RFW and minimum RHs are
likely to be around the critical 15%. Guidance indicates Haines 5-6
conditions there, as well.
Going into Thursday, 5 to 14% Min RHs with a stronger west to east
pressure gradient are likely to push conditions east of the Cascades
to RFW levels. Overnight the Fire Weather Watch for Wind/RH for
portions of 624, 284, and 285 for Thursday afternoon and evening was
expanded some due to growing confidence in very low RHs and
continued confidence in gusty winds for that time period.
Friday into the weekend the upper level trough that we've been on
the east side of early-mid week will lift northward as high pressure
in the desert southwest expands westward. This will result in
another round of heat that will be near daily record highs. A
general northerly flow across the area will result in lots of Min
RHs in the upper single digits to lower teens along with breezy
afternoon and evening winds. Light to moderate easterly flow
overnight into the morning hours over NorCal and SW Oregon is also
likely to result in only poor to moderate RH recoveries across much
of the area, especially NorCal and from the Cascades westward.
