Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Baltimore MD/Washington DC
1025 AM EST Fri Feb 12 2021
.SYNOPSIS...
An area of low pressure sliding by to our south will bring
wintry precipitation Saturday into Saturday night. A brief lull
in wintry precipitation may occur behind this system and into
early next week as high pressure builds over the region.
Another, potentially stronger, system will impact our region by
Tuesday.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
A layer of moisture is lingering in the atmosphere a few
thousand feet above the surface, resulting in widespread clouds.
Despite dew point depressions of 5 to 10 degrees at the surface,
light upglide may result in these clouds squeezing out a few
flurries, with perhaps (very) patchy freezing drizzle for some
of the higher ridges.
Clouds will not budge tonight, keeping low temperatures in the
mid 20s for most (teens to low 20s on the higher ridges out
west). Meanwhile, could start to see some overrunning
precipitation ahead of the next approaching low pressure system,
which will be moving towards us form the southeast. Precip would
likely fall in the form of some light snow/sleet or freezing
rain. Temps aloft may support some snow early on, but amounts
will be negligible.
&&
.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
For Saturday, the next winter storm arrives, with low pressure
sliding by to our southeast. Precipitation falling on the
northwest side of the low will fall through an above freezing
layer and into sub-freezing surface air. Guidance has continued
to trend downwards in terms of QPF totals, so have come down a
bit since the previous forecast. That being said, conditions
will be favorable (temps in the upper 20s to near 30 and a 10-15
mph breeze) for some decent accretion rates. Taking all of this
into account, have come up with a pretty wide swath of 0.1 to
0.2 inches of accretion along/east of the Blue Ridge, and an
area closer to (perhaps exceeding) a quarter inch along and east
of I-95. As said before, trends have been coming down in terms
of moisture availability, but still on track for the Winter
Storm Watch area to get a decent icing event. An upgrade to a
Winter Storm Warning may bee needed on subsequent updates, but
at this time, do not have the confidence to do so given the
recent trends.
The bulk of the freezing rain moves on out of here by daybreak
Sunday, leaving a mostly dry day with highs in the upper 30s to
low 40s. There could be a peak of sunshine Sunday afternoon as
well, but don't expect much.
&&
.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Active pattern will continue into next week as several shortwaves
enhance general longwave troughing over the CONUS. The storm track
will remain fairly similar with a large blocking ridge over the
Atlantic. While temperatures will be below normal (at least for
highs), the center of the Arctic airmass will remain over the
nation's mid section. This high will weaken and moderate as it
translates toward eastern Canada next week.
It's now looking like Monday will be less of a respite, with models
coming into agreement on the right entrance of the upper jet and
isentropic lift producing light precipitation, especially
northwestern parts of the CWA. While some wintry mix can't be ruled
out anywhere, it would be most plausible in these same areas
(northern Shenandoah Valley/Potomac Highlands) where surface
temperatures will also be colder. The main shortwave still looks to
arrive Monday night. Thermal profiles differ between models, but
with northerly surface winds reinforcing cold air while warm
advection commences aloft, expect a mixed bag of precip types. Am
noting more potential for eventual plain rain in southeastern
areas with 00Z guidance.
After this system departs on Tuesday, ridging will expand and likely
keep Tuesday night and Wednesday dry, though not sure if we'll
totally clear cloud cover. The next low pressure system will track
northeastward from the deep south Wednesday night into Thursday.
Suppose if this system ends up slower, there's a better chance some
areas could escape wintry weather, but with overnight lows
near/below freezing, this will be another system to watch.
Ensembles show high probabilities of at least a half inch of QPF
with this system.
&&
.AVIATION /16Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Lower clouds will move back in this afternoon ahead of the next
winter storm threat, which arrives Saturday into Saturday
night. Expect MVFR to IFR CIGs as we head into tonight. However,
BWI and MTN may be a little slower to lower CIGs this evening,
and may occur closer to the end of the TAF period.
Sub-VFR conditions are likely Saturday into Saturday Night,
with freezing rain occurring at most if not all of the
terminals. This system then moves out of the region by Sunday
morning, bringing a return to dry conditions to the region.
MVFR or lower conditions will be possible Monday as northerly winds
keep low level moisture in place. A weak system could bring a light
wintry mix, especially MRB. Wintry mix is more likely areawide
Monday night into Tuesday morning along with IFR conditions.
&&
.MARINE...
Subtle changes made to the marine forecast today into tonight.
Some gusty winds being observed in the Chesapeake Bay and lower
tidal Potomac. Winds will gradually taper off through tonight,
but may remain gusty in our far southern marine zones. Gusts
will be marginal at best, but close enough to keep the SCA up at
this time. The SCA could need to be extended at a later time,
but confidence too low at this point to do so. Borderline SCA
winds may even last trough Saturday, before tapering off into
Sunday.
Northerly winds continue Monday and Tuesday. SCA conditions could
occur at times depending on the strength of passing low pressure,
but wind speeds are uncertain at this time.
