.SYNOPSIS...
A strong cold front will progress through the area this
afternoon into this evening. High pressure will build overhead
tomorrow night into Saturday, before progressing offshore on
Sunday. Another strong cold front will move through the area
early next week, with high pressure building overhead in its
wake by the middle of the week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Current water vapor imagery shows a pronounced shortwave
progressing eastward across the northern Great Lakes. Meanwhile,
a fetch of moisture is evident from southern Texas northeastward
through the Ohio and St.Lawrence River Valleys. The combination
of moisture transport in southwesterly flow and ascent ahead of
the shortwave to our west will lead to the development of some
showers this afternoon into this evening as the system's cold
front pushes through the area. Cloud cover is gradually
overspreading the forecast area from northwest to southeast, and
showers are starting to break out within the zone of ascent
ahead of the trough. These showers will progress through the
area from west to east through the rest of the afternoon and this
evening. Along the I-95 corridor, the best chance for showers
will be between roughly 5 and 10 PM. The shower activity will
clear southern MD by around 2 AM, with gusty northwesterly winds
building in behind the front. Most locations should stay dry
through the second half of the overnight hours, but a few
upslope snow showers may be possible along the Allegheny Front.
Any accumulations should be limited to a coating. Lows overnight
will be in the 30s for most, with 20s over the higher terrain.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
The base of the upper level trough will be situated overhead
tomorrow morning, and strong cold advection will be underway at
the surface. Strong negative differential vorticity advection
as the trough progresses to our east will induce subsidence
over the area, leading to sunny skies. Conditions will be quite
blustery however, with strong northwesterly winds gusting to
around 20-30 mph throughout the day. With 850 hPa temps holding
in the -5 to -10 C range, highs will only reach into the 40s for
most, with 30s over the higher terrain. With the strong winds,
wind chills will hold in the 20s and 30s for most of the day.

High pressure will progress overhead tomorrow night, leading to
clear skies and cold conditions. Lows will be in the 20s for
most, with some lower 30s in downtown DC and Baltimore.

High pressure will slide offshore and flow aloft will become
zonal in nature on Saturday. High clouds will be on the
increase through the day, but conditions will remain dry. Winds
will become light out of the south, and temperatures will
remain below normal, with highs in the 40s to around 50 for
most.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
On Sunday a more meridional pattern sets up, as the high pressure
from over the weekend moves offshore and a strong cold front
approaches from the west.

As the cold front moves through our area late Sunday, a strong upper
trough is expected to develop to the north around the Great Lakes. A
potent vort max rounding the trough will act to deepen the trough
and tilt it in the negative. By late Monday, a closed upper low
associated with the deep upper-level trough will induce a coastal
low off the Mid-Atlantic shore. With this system exiting to the east
and high pressure building behind it, a strong pressure gradient
will be in place, potentially causing strong winds through mid-week.

The strong cold front moving through late Sunday will bring
temperatures nearly 10 degrees below normal to the region, as well
as possible upslope snow to the Allegheny Front with accumulation.
Other areas in the CWA may see rain showers, but accumulation should
be light. High temperatures will cool from the upper 40s-mid 50s on
Sunday to the upper 20s-mid 40s by Tuesday. Overnight lows will cool
from the 30s-upper 40s on Sunday to the mid-20s Monday and Tuesday,
with locally milder temps near the bay. Wednesday will see highs
approaching the 50s (40s in the mountains) and lows lingering in the
30s.

.AVIATION /19Z THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Conditions are currently VFR, with gusty south to southwesterly
winds at the terminals. Clouds will be on the increase through
the afternoon, and some showers may break out through the
evening hours. Conditions are expected to remain VFR, but a
brief period of sub-VFR conditions can't be ruled out in
association with the showers. There will be a sharp wind shift
from S/SW to W/NW this evening, but winds will continue to be
gusty overnight into tomorrow. Winds will weaken tomorrow night
as high pressure builds overhead. Continued VFR conditions are
expected on Saturday, with winds turning around to out of the
south.

Sunday starts with dry conditions before the front moving through
brings rain chances along with it. With the frontal passage, subVFR
conditions are possible Sunday night. Winds behind the front will be
gusty and out of the W/NW, but exact timing of the frontal passage
is uncertain at this time.

.MARINE...
SCAs are in effect for all water through tomorrow night. Winds
are currently out of the SSW, with gusts to around 20-25 knots.
A sharp wind shift is expected this evening as a cold front
moves across the waters. Winds will turn west to northwesterly
behind the front, but remain elevated. A brief period of Gale
conditions can't be ruled out immediately behind the front this
evening, or with a secondary pressure surge during the second
half of the overnight hours, but didn't currently have the
confidence to issue a Gale. We will continue to monitor this
potential. An SMW can't be ruled out this evening either if any
storms are able to form along the front and briefly mix higher
winds down from aloft.

The general trend tomorrow evening should be downward with the
winds as high pressure builds in from the west, but the current
SCA may need to eventually be extended a few hours further into
the overnight hours, especially over the wider waters. Lighter
southerly winds are expected on Saturday.

As a cold front moves through the area Sunday and approaches the
waters, high winds and gusts may necessitate Small Craft Advisories
on Sunday ahead of the front and Monday behind the front. Winds over
the Chesapeake Bay may approach Gale-Force criteria Monday into
Monday night, but confidence with timing is low.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
A southerly flow will cause elevated anomalies today, but the
winds should be west of south so the more likely scenario is for
water levels to reach caution stages in sensitive areas instead
of minor flooding thresholds.
