Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A Bermuda high will continue to shift farther offshore today,
which will allow a cold front to approach the region. The front
will cross the area tonight. High pressure will gradually build
back into the region for the weekend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY/...
A cold front that is currently draped across the Lower Great
Lakes will make its way slowly southeastward today into tonight.
Showers and a few thunderstorms will likely develop over the
Appalachians and along the Mason-Dixon region this afternoon.
As we approach sunset and carry on into this evening, these
showers and any thunderstorms could be joined by additional
showers and stronger thunderstorms that develop due to daytime
heating and increasing wind shear. A few storms may produce
gusty to damaging winds, mainly this afternoon and evening
(roughly 2 PM to 10 PM) over portions of northern Virginia to
central Maryland.

As the cold front pushes through the region later this evening
and overnight, much drier and noticeably cooler air will rush in
across the region from the northwest. Upslope rain showers could
be attributed to these strong northwest flow later tonight
through Friday. Temperatures and dewpoint temperatures will
drop consistently throughout tonight with frontal passage. While
dewpoint temperatures are expected to plummet throughout the
day on Friday, temperatures will have a slow drop throughout the
day. Cold air advection will supersede daytime heating where
the high temperatures on Friday may very well occur after
midnight tonight. Hence, this would be the scenario of the high
temperature for the day occurring around midnight and the low
temperature occurring prior to midnight the following day. Highs
Friday may be 65 to 70 degrees around midnight. Lows Friday may
be 45 to 50 degrees around midnight Saturday.

A bigger story for Friday, along with the temperatures, will be
very strong winds behind the frontal passage all day Friday and
Friday evening. We could encounter frequent sustained northwest
winds of 20 to 35 mph with gusts 45 to 60 mph. This magnitude
of wind could bring down small branches and blow loose objects
around. Will be evaluating the need for upgrades to the High
Wind Watch (to High Wind Warnings) or additions of Wind
Advisories.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
Strong northwest winds will gradually diminish Friday night,
mainly after midnight as temperatures fall through the 40s into
the 30s in many places. Some middle to upper 20s possible in the
west Friday night and early Saturday morning.

More seasonable temperatures, mostly sunny skies during the day
and mainly clear skies at night, and light southwest winds are
expected Saturday and Saturday night. High pressure will be in
control.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
To finish out the weekend, split flow regimes a fixture in the
forecast. A closed low hung up across south Texas should finally
begin to eject toward the northeast in response to lowering heights
across the Desert Southwest. The influence of this ejecting trough
from the Southern Plains will become more apparent on Monday. Until
that occurs, a marked warming trend is expected to take shape as
winds turn southwesterly around the western Atlantic anticyclone.
Forecast 850-mb temperatures jump up by as much as 10C from Saturday
into Sunday. Consequently, given deep boundary layer mixing, low 80s
should become quite commonplace.

By Monday, the mentioned system across the Lone Star state will
attain a more progressive mode as the closed low evolves into more
of an open wave. The 00Z GFS/ECMWF solutions support fairly healthy
vertical wind shear with 0-6 km values around 40 to 50 knots.
However, instability appears to be rather scant which would mitigate
any organized thunderstorm potential. Lift from the approaching
trough should spread showers through the region on Monday.
Prevailing south-southwesterly winds will keep temperatures up,
generally close to Sunday numbers.

While still many days away, Tuesday presents a potential for better
thunderstorm coverage. Progressive flow across the middle of the
country will carry a shortwave from the Southern High Plains to the
Tennessee Valley. GEFS ensembles depict quite a bit of instability
with values ranging from 1,000 to 2,500 J/kg depending on the
member. Southwesterly flow aloft should provide enough lift to spawn
showers and thunderstorms, but details are fuzzy this far in time.
Persistent low-level warm advection will keep dew points up along
with continued mild temperatures in the low to mid 80s.

A cold front is forecast to eventually cross the region by the
middle of next week. Based on the difference in the global
ensembles, confidence is low in timing this out. Until this frontal
passage occurs, expect daily chances for showers and thunderstorms.
Wednesday's highs are expected to drop down into the mid/upper 70s.
A quick look at the ensemble spread shows a range of possibilities
from the 60s to the mid 80s so uncertainty is high as mentioned.
Overnight lows will remain mild through at least the first half of
the week.

.AVIATION /15Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
VFR conditions for the most part through midday today. MVFR
ceilings could unfold this afternoon with showers and a few
gusty thunderstorms developing near any of the terminals.

A cold front will approach and cross the terminals tonight.
Gusty southwest winds will pick back up today, before blasting
in from the northwest across the terminals behind frontal
passage late tonight through Friday evening. Wind gusts could
exceed 30 to 40 knots.

Mainly VFR expected Saturday and Saturday night. NW wind gusts
of 20-30 kt psbl Sat.

VFR conditions are likely on Sunday along with a turn to
southwesterly winds. Given the chance for some showers and perhaps a
thunderstorm, some reduction to sub-VFR ceilings/visibility are
possible on Monday. Winds should pick up a bit with southwesterly
gusts up to 20 knots or so.

.MARINE...
Southwesterly winds will continue today due to high pressure
off the southeast coast. Small craft conditions will be a more
common today, but mixing issues will continue over the deeper
waters.

A cold front will cross the waters tonight. Showers and a few
thunderstorms will be possible along the front. SCA conditions
will also likely continue, especially after winds shift to the
northwest. Two surges of strong winds are expected: one Friday
morning behind the front, and another late Friday afternoon/evening
behind a secondary front. Gale to perhaps storm force winds are
possible through Friday night.

A gusty northwesterly wind will likely persist through at least the
first half of Saturday behind a departing cold front. The wind
should abate Saturday night as high pressure moves across, then may
increase a bit again late in the weekend as the high moves
offshore.

Southwesterly winds on Sunday could approach SCA levels, but
the better chance for this potential would be on Monday.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
A southerly flow will keep water levels elevated through
today. Minor tidal flooding is possible in sensitive areas like
DC SW Waterfront and the Upper Chesapeake Bay. Caution more
likely over the Upper Chesapeake Bay. Water levels will
decrease for the end of the week behind a strong cold front.

The record temperature for April 28th (Wednesday) at Dulles was
tied with a high of 88 degrees. The previous record of 88
degrees was set in 1990.
