Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED
National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA
1151 PM PDT Thu Jun 24 2021
Updated aviation section
.SYNOPSIS...24/901 PM.
Slight warming trend through Friday with low clouds and fog over
coasts and some valleys. Significant warming starting Saturday
and peaking Sunday and Monday when triple digit highs will be
common over the hottest valleys and mountains along with an
increased risk for heat-related illnesses exist. Very warm
conditions will continue Tuesday through Thursday, with increased
clouds and possible monsoonal showers and thunderstorms
&&
.SHORT TERM (TDY-SAT)...24/908 PM.
***UPDATE***
The forecast is in good shape with no significant updates needed
this evening.
An upper level low will remain parked over San Fransisco through
tomorrow, but will continue to weaken. This will allow high
pressure to the south to push north a little, which will bring a
touch of warming and shallowing of the marine layer into Friday.
The marine layer clouds cleared out well today and are taking
their sweet time to develop this evening, but should push into
most coastal areas tonight with limited spread into any valleys.
There isn't much reason to anticipate anything different on Friday
from the full clearing on Thursday.
***From Previous Discussion***
In the meantime, expecting a similar or perhaps slightly reduced
areal coverage and depth of the stratus tonight. Weakening onshore
flow Friday along with the building ridge aloft will lead to at
least a couple degrees of warming in most areas but most
noticeable across interior SLO County where highs will be 10-15
degrees warmer than today.
Increasing northerly gradients the next couple nights will result
in some gusty Sundowner winds in southern Santa Barbara County,
particularly the western portion. Might see isolated advisory
level gusts tonight in the western foothills of the Santa Ynez
Range but more widespread Friday night so for now no wind
advisory will be posted for that area.
The Friday warming will ramp up Saturday and especially Sunday
when temperatures in the far interior areas like the Antelope
Valley and even parts of interior SLO County approach 110. An
Excessive Heat Watch will be posted for those areas, the adjacent
mountains, as well as the Santa Clarita Valley. There is expected
to be enough of an onshore push to keep a lid on temperatures in
the other coastal valleys with Woodland Hills likely topping at or
just short of 100. And there likely will still be some stratus
around for coastal areas during the night and morning and highs
there will generally stay in the 70s, except 80s several miles
inland from the beach.
.LONG TERM (SUN-WED)...24/159 PM.
High pressure remains locked in place across almost the entire
western third of the US and Canada Monday but then starts to
weaken slightly after that as a trough pushes in to British
Columbia. This by itself would likely result in some cooling
across the area, though still well above normal for inland areas.
However, on top of that it looks like monsoon moisture will start
moving in from the southeast, possibly in tandem with an easterly
wave. Models still aren't in complete agreement on the details
which is to be expected with these patterns but at least both the
GFS and ECMWF ensembles show a decent increase in PW's beginning
as early as Monday but ramping up Tuesday through Thursday. Models
also show a tropical cyclone forming off Mexico around mid week
that would also likely contribute the increasing moisture content
given the favorable upper level winds. So having at least small
precip chances in the forecast is reasonable and may need
increasing or expanding into coast and valley areas if confidence
in the easterly wave grows as we get closer.
With regard to the Excessive Heat Watch, given the weakening high
pressure aloft and possible clouds and showers temperatures
should be cooling down (though it may not feel like it with the
increasing humidity). For this reason it was decided to just go
with Sunday and Monday and wait to see how things go with the
potential monsoon flow before going any longer with it. There is a
chance another day or two could be added, especially if the
moisture increase doesn't pan out.

.AVIATION...25/0650Z.
At 06Z, the marine layer depth was around 1000 feet deep at KLAX.
The inversion top was around 1600 feet with a temperature around
16 degrees Celsius. There was another inversion up to around 4900
feet.
Low-to-moderate confidence in the current forecast. IFR to MVFR
conditions will along the Central Coast will become more
widespread over coastal and lower valleys terminals through 14Z.
There is a moderate (30-40 percent) chance of LIFR conditions at
Central Coast terminals between 10Z and 14Z. VFR conditions should
develop between 15Z and 17Z.
KLAX...IFR to MVFR coniditions will spread in as early as 08Z, or
as late as 13Z. Conditions should improve to MVFR no later than
16Z, then VFR conditions should around 17Z. Any easterly winds
will remain less than 7 knots.
KBUR...VFR conditions are expected through the period. No wind
impacts are expected at this time. There is a 10 percent chance of
MVFR visibilities affected the terminal between 13Z and 15Z.
&&
.MARINE...24/837 PM.
Patchy fog, locally dense with visibility under one mile, will
continue into next week. The poorest visibility and most widely
spread conditions will occur in the overnight and morning hours.
Across the outer waters... Winds will increase to Small Craft
Advisory (SCA) level during the afternoon and evening hours
tonight through Tuesday. Otherwise, conditions will remain below
SCA level.
Across the nearshore waters of the Central Coast... Winds will
likely increase to SCA level during the afternoon and evening
hours Saturday through Monday. Otherwise, conditions will remain
below SCA level.
Across the inner waters south of Point Conception... Winds will
increase to SCA level near Point Conception and through the Santa
Barbara Channel during the afternoon and evening hours Friday
through Sunday. Otherwise and elsewhere, conditions will remain
below SCA level.
&&
.BEACHES...24/839 PM.
An elevated long-period south swell and higher than normal
astronomical tides will continue to result in minor tidal
overflows and beach erosion tonight across Los Angeles and
Ventura County beaches. There will be some pooling of water around
high tide and there may be minor flooding of beach parking lots.
In addition, there will be dangerous rip currents along these
beaches, especially south-facing shores, this evening.
The swell will diminish by Friday but high tides will still reach
around 7 feet which may lead to continued minor overflow.
&&
.LOX WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
CA...Excessive Heat Watch in effect from Sunday morning through
Monday evening for zones 37-38-51>54-59-88. (See LAXNPWLOX).

for zones 40-41. (See LAXCFWLOX).
PZ...Small Craft Advisory in effect until 5 AM PDT Friday for

&&
.HAZARD POTENTIAL OUTLOOK (SAT-WED).
A hot air mass will settle into the region over the weekend.
Hot temperatures are for inland areas Sunday and Monday at least
and remain above normal the rest of the week. This will likely
bring heat-related illness concerns to interior sections.
Monsoonal moisture could bring showers and thunderstorms to the
mountains and Antelope Valley Tuesday through Thursday.
