.SYNOPSIS...25/315 AM.
High pressure will build into the region through the weekend and
bring a warming trend through at least Sunday. Triple digit high
temperatures will be common over the hottest valleys, foothills,
and desert between Saturday and Monday. Very warm conditions are
likely to continue Tuesday through Thursday with increased clouds
and possible monsoonal showers and thunderstorms.

.SHORT TERM (TDY-SUN)...25/934 AM.
***UPDATE***
Marine layer depth around 1500' across LA/Ventura Counties and
around 2000' north. Stratus coverage was much less than expected
this morning south of Pt Conception but solid to the north and
included a good portion of interior SLO County.
The forecast remains largely unchanged from the last few days.
We're starting a warming trend today, but it will mostly be felt
across northern interior SLO county where high pressure aloft
will be building in from the north and rapidly lowering the marine
layer depth. Slight warming expected in the south as onshore flow
is a little weaker. The warming trend will continue through
Sunday, after which temps either level off or start a slow drop.
Excessive Heat Watches in effect for all interior areas and the
Santa Clarita Valley Sunday/Monday and that still looks good. Will
likely be converting those to warnings either later today or
tomorrow. Still looks like a reasonable chance for afternoon
convection in the mountains and Antelope Valley starting around
next Tuesday. And if that easterly wave on the GFS pans out for
next Wednesday or Thursday we could see some convection and/or
showers across southern coast and valley areas. 850 dewpoints
weren't quite as high on the overnight models compared to
yesterday but ensembles still show PWs around 1.2-1.5"
***From Previous Discussion***
500 mb heights will climb about a decameter each day across the
region and bring a warming trend to the area. By Sunday when 500
mb heights climb to around 590 decameters, a hot air mass will
settle into the region away from the coast. Temperatures in the
warmest locations such as the Woodland Hills, Paso Robles, Santa
Clarita, Palmdale, and Lancaster will exceed 100 degrees. An
excessive heat watch remains in effect for the interior portions
of the area where the hottest temperatures are expected. The daily
records look on the high side for the coming days, but in some
locations, an isolated record heat values could be tied or broken.
Closer to the coast, the marine layer depth will get squished as
ridging aloft clamps down on top of the marine layer and
strengthens the marine inversion. The marine layer depth
currently near 800 feet deep at KLAX will likely thin to about 400
feet between tonight and Saturday morning, then remain around 400
feet through the weekend. In some coastal areas due to the
thinning, the marine layer stratus could become absent. Ridging
aloft will weaken the onshore flow pattern, but it should remain
in place along the coast and keep the sea breeze in play. This
will keep the warming trend along the coast somewhat moderated.
HRRR and local 3-km WRF solutions suggest a high chance of gusty
Sundowner winds developing this evening, and again on Saturday
evening. NAM-WRF KSBA-KSMX surface pressure gradients tighten to
near -4 mb tonight and -3.5 mb Saturday night. With 950 mb
temperature differences between Santa Maria and Santa Barbara,
approaching 10 degrees Celsius in combination with the gradients,
a wind advisory is being considered at this time for this evening.
The strongest winds will likely be west of Goleta and out towards
Gaviota.
.LONG TERM (MON-THU)...25/412 AM.
Ridging aloft starts to weaken and recenter north of the area
early next week. Southeast flow aloft will develop between Monday
and Tuesday and likely develop a monsoonal flow pattern over the
region. Both ECMWF and GFS solutions continue to hint at the
possibility of an easterly wave pushing beneath the ridge. This
could bring a cooler but more humid pattern and possibility of
showers and thunderstorms advancing toward the coast and valleys.
Slight chance PoPs remain in the forecast for now between Tuesday
and Thursday as GEFS and ECMWF ensemble members are waffling
between Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for possible convective
activity across the region. GEFS perturbations are the least
consistent for eastern Los Angeles County ranging from QPF amounts
on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, or any combination of the days.
Meanwhile, ECMWF members are less in indicating QPF amounts for
the same region but favor Wednesday afternoon and evening. The
forecast will remain consistent in advertising very warm
conditions continuing and the possibility of shower and
thunderstorm activity.

At 1801Z, Near KLAX, the marine layer was around 900 feet deep.
The top of the inversion was around 4400 feet with a temperature
around 23 degrees Celsius.
High confidence with desert and valley TAFs over the next
24-hours. There is low to moderate confidence with coastal TAFs.
Will go with similar stratus pattern for tonight into Sat
morning. There is a 40-50 percent chance of VFR conditions through
the period, otherwise marine clouds are expected to produce IFR
conditions.
KLAX...Low confidence in the 18z TAF. There is a 40-50 percent
chance of VFR conditions through the period. There is a 20 percent
chance of east winds greater than 6 knots.
KBUR...VFR conditions are expected through the period. No wind
impacts are expected at this time.

.MARINE...25/926 AM.
Across the outer waters... Small Craft Advisory (SCA) winds will
continue this morning through Tuesday for the two southern zones
(PZZ673-676) while the northern zone (PZZ670) will increase to
SCA level gusts as well through Tuesday. There is a significant
threat of GALE FORCE winds Sunday through Monday.
Across the nearshore waters of the Central Coast...Winds will
increase to SCA level this afternoon and evening hours and once
again during the afternoon and evenings Saturday through Monday.
Across the inner waters south of Point Conception... Winds will
increase to SCA level near Point Conception and through the
western portion of the Santa Barbara Channel late this afternoon
and evening hours. There is a 40-50% chance for this to continue
each late afternoon through evening hours through Sunday.
Otherwise, conditions will remain below SCA level from the Channel
Islands to San Mateo Point including the San Pedro Channel.
