Area forecast discussion, May 17, 9:30 PM PDT, 5 hours 24 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA
930 PM PDT Mon May 17 2021

.SYNOPSIS...17/915 PM.

Night through morning low clouds will be common over most coastal
and valley locations this week. Gusty west to northwest winds will
strengthen each day through Thursday, strongest over Santa Barbara
County, most mountains, and the Antelope Valley. Some warming
expected the next few days before another low pressure system
moves into the area and lingers through the weekend bringing
cooler temperatures and areas of drizzle or light rain.

&&

.SHORT TERM (MON-THU)...17/929 PM.

***UPDATE***

The forecast is in good shape this evening. Issued a last minute
Wind Advisory for the Antelope Valley when surface winds were
increasing late in the afternoon and mountain wave clouds were
forming over the Tehachapi's. The waves clouds continue to expand
this evening, but the surface winds have relaxed
significantly. Therefore, canceled the Wind Advisory as fast as
it was issued. Otherwise, low clouds and fog continue to expand
into the coastal and valley areas, albeit in a very disjointed
manner. The marine layer has lower significantly in the last 24
hours and now sits around 1500 feet over LAX. This lowering and
the persistent onshore flow might actually help the clouds follow
a more traditional clearing pattern, slow at the beaches and
quick in the valleys, which is different than the reverse that
happened on Monday. The NW winds are still on track to increase
each day through Thursday. Wednesday and Thursday look quite windy
in the favored areas like Santa Barbara County, most mountains,
and the Antelope Valley. Expecting Wind Advisories in those areas
by Wednesday if not by Tuesday.

***From Previous Discussion***

With weak high pressure building over the area Tue/Wed we're
expecting a slight warming trend and lowering marine layer but
only to around 2000-3000' so still plenty of overnight cloud
coverage across the coast, valleys, and lower mountain slopes.

The most impactful weather factor next couple days will be the
increasing northwest flow Tue/Wed that will generate gusty
Sundowner winds in southern Santa Barbara County as well as gusty
north to northwest winds in the I5 Corridor region and Antelope
Valley. Wind gusts to near 50 mph are possible in the most
favored areas Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. The northerly flow
over the Santa Ynez range will help boost temperatures in southern
SB County well into the 70s and possibly lower 80s by late in the
afternoon.

On Thursday another upper low will drop out of Canada and start
sliding south along the West Coast, moving into northern
California Thursday afternoon. This will lead to another round of
deepening marine layer, slower clearing, and cooler temps that
will likely continue into the weekend.

.LONG TERM (FRI-MON)...17/142 PM.

The deep trough will continue over the state Fri/Sat with the
marine layer likely pushing back up to at least 4000' and possibly
some drizzle or light rain in a lot of the same areas as last
weekend. Daytime highs will drop back into the 60s to lower 70s
most areas.

Models maintain troughing over the area Sunday/Monday but some
improvement expected as the main upper low exits to the northeast
and some warmer air moves in from the west. The ECMWF is faster
and more aggressive with the warming trend and also has some very
light offshore flow as early as Monday. Based on the upper level
pattern and time of year this seems overdone and favor a slightly
more tempered warming trend for now but will see how the pattern
evolves over the next several days.

.AVIATION...18/0132Z.

At 00Z over KLAX, the marine layer was 1800 ft deep. The top of
the inversion was at 5000 feet and 17 degrees Celsius.

Moderate confidence in the CIGS and VIS forecast. Moderate
confidence in the timing, plus or minus 3 hours. Overall expecting
CIGS to be around 500 feet lower than last night as the marine
layer shrinks some. Gusty west winds will continue over KWJF KPMD
most of the night, peaking through 04Z, then likely stronger
Tuesday after 21Z. IFR/MVFR BLDU possible.

KLAX...Moderate confidence that CIGS will prevail through at least
18Z Tue. CIGS will be lower than last night, likely around 015
tonight and lifting to around 020 Tue morning. Moderate confidence
in timing, plus or minus 2 hours. Light SE winds possible 12-18Z
Tue, moderate confidence they will stay below 8 KT.

KBUR...Moderate confidence that CIGS will form 06-09Z, and
prevail through at least 18Z Tue. Low confidence on Tue clearing
times. CIGS will be lower than last night, likely staying between
010 and 018.

.MARINE...17/922 PM.

For the Central Coast to San Nicolas Island, high confidence in
forecast with NW winds increasing to Gale on Tuesday and peaking
on Thursday with dangerously strong Gales. For the Santa Barbara
Channel, winds will increase each afternoon, with Small Craft
Advisories likely for the western portion Tuesday and Wednesday.
Eastern portions will likely see much less wind. On Thursday
however, moderate confidence that winds will fill the channel and
likely will be widespread Gale. For the Santa Monica Basin, Small
Craft Advisory conditions are possible over the far west portion
Tuesday and Wednesday, with SE winds up to 15 kt likely each
morning closer to the coast including the San Pedro Channel.
Thursday will be windy everywhere, at least Small Craft Advisory
and possibly gale. All of these increasing winds will result in
increasing short period waves, with dangerously steep seas. A
very long period south swell will fill in the area tonight.
