.SYNOPSIS...27/258 AM.
High pressure aloft will persist through at least the weekend
bringing continued warmer than normal temperatures across inland
areas away from the coast. Night through morning low clouds with
patchy dense fog will continue across coastal areas and Santa Ynez
Valley mainly north of Point Conception. There is a chance for
more widespread low clouds late this weekend into next week.
&&
.SHORT TERM (TDY-SUN)...27/851 AM.
***UPDATE***
Low clouds are currently retreating from the Central Coast this
morning with a bit of patchy dense fog still lingering. Visibility
should improve shortly and there will be abundant sunshine by late
morning, except some beaches may remain cloudy through the day.
The main headline today will be heat, especially over inland
areas. A bit of offshore flow over the interior this morning will
help boost temperatures today. High temperatures will range from
the mid 90s to 105 over the valleys. Heat Advisories remain in
effect from 10am to 8pm for all the mountains, the interior SLO
valleys, as well as the San Fernando Valley. Coastal areas away
from the beaches should also warm up quite nicely thanks to weak
onshore flow and lack of morning stratus. No wind issues are
expected today. Forecast looks in good shape.
***From Previous Discussion***
Synoptically through the weekend, A weak upper level trough that
was sagging across the very northern part of California and into
the Great Basin, will be short lived as high pressure aloft
across the Eastern pacific will stretch across California and
through the SW states through Sunday leaving the troughy pattern
well to the north into OR/WA. At the lower levels, Onshore
gradients will remain fairly weak today and Saturday with some
strengthening on Sunday. Night through morning low clouds should
behave in similar fashion as the previous few days, mainly
affecting coastal areas N of Point Conception and Santa Ynez
Valley, but low clouds could flirt with L.A. County coastal areas
late tonight and Saturday night with better coastal coverage
Sunday night into Monday and possibly into the San Gabriel Valley
as well.
Highs across the San Gabriel, Santa Clarita and eastern San
Fernando Valleys will be in the upper 90s to around 101, but the
western portion of the San Fernando Valley should reach around 106
today. Also, interior SLO County, especially across the Salinas
River Valley will reach around 105 degrees today, with the Cuyama
Valley ranging in the 90s to around 100. Some of the lower
mountain elevations should reach the lower 100s as well including
Acton and Ozena. Inland coastal areas will be range from the 80s
to around 90 towards Downtown L.A. High temps should be a tad
cooler on Saturday for most coast and valleys, with little change
across the Antelope Valley. For Sunday, there will be a degree or
two of cooling across coast and valleys, while the Antelope Valley
warms up a degree or two to around 106. Latest NAM/GFS were
hinting at some mid level monsoonal flow starting to push into SE
California on Sunday and some high clouds could affect L.A. County
in the afternoon and possibly a few cu buildups across the
Eastern San Gabriels with no precip expected.
.LONG TERM (MON-THU)...27/445 AM.
A broad trough associated with an area of low pressure across the
Pacific NW will persist across Northern California and areas to
the north. This will cause H5 heights to lower as high pressure
starts to breakdown over the region through the extended period
Mon-Thu. SW flow aloft and stronger onshore flow at the lower
levels will allow for the marine layer to deepen through next week
with low clouds likely starting to reach coastal valleys. High
temps will start to trend down 3 to 5 degrees on Monday, with more
significant cooling Tuesday into Wednesday. High temps will be
5-10 degrees cooler than normal both Tue and Wed.
The forecast could get tricky by Tuesday as remnants from what is
now Tropical Storm Nora, soon to be upgraded to a hurricane, will
be pushing across Baja late Monday or Tuesday morning and
sending some deep sub-tropical moisture into Arizona and to a
lesser extent into SE California. The mid level steering flow
will be out of the south to southeast around the storm center.
Currently, the latest NBM and other ensembles keeps the western
peripheral of the moisture boundary east and south of L.A. County
Tue through Wed. We should have a better handle on the forecast
path of Nora by late this weekend. At this point with the bulk of
the moisture and the best steering flow remaining east of our
region, the forecast will be kept dry, but there is a less than 10
percent chance of storms over the far eastern LA mountains and
Antelope Valley. If this deep sub-tropical moisture does make it
into the forecast area, all bets are off in respect to the marine
layer stratus holding together as the mid level moisture generally
makes for a chaotic low cloud regime.
By Thursday, the steering mid level flow will start to shift back
to a drier SW flow and high temps should trend up a degree or two.
Stay tuned, it will be an interesting first half of the week
ahead with the outside chance that Nora could throw a curve ball
into the forecast.

.AVIATION...27/1759Z.
At 1730Z, the marine layer depth was around 600 feet deep at
KLAX. The top of the marine inversion was around 2400 feet with a
temperature near 27 degrees Celsius.
Moderate confidence overall in the 18Z TAFs. Many coastal
airfields should have low clouds and IFR/LIFR conditions sometime
tonight into Sat morning. There is also a 30%-40% chance the KSBA,
KOXR and KLGB may not have any low cigs during the period. The
timing of the onset and dissipation of any low clouds may be off

.MARINE...27/816 AM.
Moderate to high confidence in the current forecast. Higher
confidence in the forecast between Saturday and Tuesday. Less
confidence in the forecast today and tonight.
Choppy short-period seas are very likely across the coastal
waters through the weekend and into Monday. Otherwise, Small
Craft Advisory (SCA) level northwest winds will very likely to
persist through at least this afternoon for the waters
outside 10 NM northwest through southwest of the Channel Islands
and along the Central Coast. There is a good chance of SCA level
winds extending through late tonight for the waters northwest of
Point Conception. Then, winds should fall below SCA levels through
at least Tuesday.
Areas of dense fog with visibility one nautical mile or less are
possible for the northern waters and the waters west of the
Channel Island this morning, and again tonight through Saturday
morning. With the shallow marine layer depth in place, patchy
dense fog could linger through the weekend, especially during the
night through morning hours.
