Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service New Orleans LA 1154 PM CDT Sun May 16 2021 .UPDATE... updated for 06z taf issuance. && .PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 338 PM CDT Sun May 16 2021/ SHORT TERM (Tonight through Tuesday Night)...A plume of deeper moisture will bring a sharp gradient in precipitable water values, overall instability, and rain chances to the forecast area beginning tonight and persisting through Tuesday night. Precipitable water values will generally range around 1.5 to 1.75 inches for areas west of the I-55 corridor and closer 1 to 1.25 inches for areas east of the corridor. The lowest precipitable water values will generally be over portions of coastal Mississippi where values may not exceed an inch. Another facet of the forecast through Tuesday night will be a largely difluent flow pattern in the upper levels. This difluent pattern aloft will be tied into a stalled out longwave trough axis centered over Texas and the Southern Plains, and will provide additional upper level forcing and support for convective development. That being said, the convection will be largely diurnal with POP values peaking in the afternoon hours when MLCAPE is maximized at around 1000 J/KG in our western zones. Fortunately, a lack of shear will keep any thunderstorm activity on the weaker side with only pulse convection expected. As a result, brief heavy downpours, occasional lightning strikes, and a few wind gusts up to 30 mph will be possible with the deepest convection. With the sharp moisture and instability gradient in place, POP values will range from near 60 percent along the Atchafalaya Basin to less than 20 percent along the Mississippi coast each afternoon. Persistent onshore flow of around 15 mph could also present a coastal flooding issue in our most flood prone communities beginning on Tuesday. The most impacted area for coastal flooding will be Hancock County, MS with some low lying neighborhoods likely experiencing low lying road flooding during the high tide cycle on Tuesday. A coastal flood advisory will likely be issued tomorrow for Hancock County to give ample lead time for the flooding expected flooding issues on Tuesday. LONG TERM (Wednesday through Saturday Night)...All of the medium range guidance is in good agreement that a strong upper level ridge over the eastern Gulf and Florida will begin to extend back to the west during the latter portion of the week. As subsidence in the mid and upper levels increases, mid-level moisture will decrease and capping inversion will develop as temperatures warm aloft. This will decrease overall instability and lead to less cloud and thunderstorm activity. However, the west to east moisture and instability gradient will still be in play as the strongest ridging influences will be felt across the eastern third of the forecast area through the long term period. As the ridge builds westward, POP values will gradually decrease across the entire area with only isolated to widely scattered diurnal convection expected by Saturday afternoon over the western third of the CWA. Fortunately, shear values will remain minimal and any convection will be short-lived and weak. The increase in subsidence and decrease in precipitable water values through the latter part of the week will result in less cloud development and warmer temperatures. Highs should warm from the near normal mid-80s on Wednesday into the warmer than normal upper 80s to possibly 90 on Saturday. However, the slightly drier airmass moving in will allow dewpoints to drop into the lower to middle 60s, and this will keep heat index values closer to the air temperature. At night, the combination of mainly clear skies and lower dewpoints will allow temperatures to dip into the 60s and lower 70s. Overall, a hint of a more Summer like pattern will be evident by the end of the week. AVIATION (06z)... VFR conditions will last a little while longer before dipping down to MVFR to IFR ceilings. A few sites have already gotten to MVFR. In addition, gradient winds remain a bit gusty. Showers and thunderstorms will start moving in from the west, with terminals west of I-55 having the best chances for some showers and thunderstorms. -BL MARINE...A fairly strong pressure gradient will develop over the coastal waters tomorrow and remain in place through the week. This gradient will be driven by a strengthening ridge of high pressure over the eastern Gulf and a persistent area of low pressure over the Southern Plains. As a result, southeast flow of 15 to 20 knots is expected to continue tomorrow, and this flow could further increase to small craft advisory levels of 20 to 25 knots from Tuesday through the end of the week. The combination of wind waves and swell should also push seas up to 7 to 10 feet in the open Gulf waters from Wednesday through the end of the week. Tide levels will also be higher than average along the immediate coast.
