MVFR ceilings of between 1500 and 3000 feet will persist through
the afternoon hours at most of the terminals. Only KGPT is
expected to see prevailing VFR conditions through the afternoon
with some showers in the vicinity. The MVFR ceilings should
continue through the overnight hours at the majority of the
terminals with only KMCB dropping into IFR range around 12z
tomorrow. The rainfall should become less prevalent and have only
VCSH mention for most terminals. Another round of stratiform
rainfall should begin to develop during the late morning hours

MORNING UPDATE...After reviewing the satellite and radar trends
have adjusted POP and weather grids slightly for today and tonight.
Still have likely to categorical POP in place for today for areas
mainly along and west of the I-55 corridor including portions of
the Southshore. Rainfall has been largely stratiform today with a
few embedded thunderstorms noted mainly over metro New Orleans
this morning. Rainfall rates with these thunderstorms have been
generally been around half an inch per hour. At this time, will
hold off on issuing any flash flood watches for the area. Will
continue to monitor and will make a decision after the 12z model
guidance comes in. Any issuance would likely occur with the
afternoon full forecast package. The temperature, dewpoint, sky
cover, and wind forecast is on track at this time, and no
adjustments were made to these forecast parameters this morning.

MORNING UPDATE...Sending a quick update for the morning forecast.
Convection is already firing along an area from coastal LA just
west of the mouth of the river north along the I-55 corridor. This
appears to be located along the axis of a maximum in MLCAPE,
slightly better low level convergence mainly seen around the h925
level, increase in low level moisture also associated this
increase in h925 winds, increase in dewpoints, and deeper moisture
finally moving in with this mornings sounding already measuring
1.67" which is higher right now than what was anticipated even 12
hours ago. Cooling cloud tops can be seen around Terrebonne and
Lafourche parishes and over Terrebonne Bay. Also we have seen an
uptick in lightning.
With that we have increased PoPs to likely and categorical, not
showing 100% because there will likely still be spots that remain
dry but could probably show 80-90 over much of the area west of a
line from Boothville to Bogalusa and south of the MS/LA border.
QPF values were adjusted up some given what is starting to occur
but nothing major yet. Zones and grids will be out shortly. /CAB/

SHORT TERM...The night has been relatively quiet but forecast wise
there has been a big shift in thinking for the next 48 to 60 hours.
Moisture is still returning slowly but is returning with
dewpoints in the 60s across the region. Light rain is already
trying to slide in here from the west and there are a lot of
questions regarding rain and amount potential for the next 60 hrs.
There is a multitude of issues in the forecast for the entire week
and we will be open and honest with you, we don't really have a good
handle on the outcome in the forecast through Tuesday night. That
said we will provide you with the best forecast to our abilities but
confidence is low and bust potential is very high.
First off the one thing we are quite confident in is coastal
Flooding. Minor impacts will start today but moderate coastal
flooding could be an issue later this week. Even though the
astronomical tides are decreasing as we head towards the neap tide
in this cycle, moderate to strong onshore flow already in place
will continue through the week. This will pump the water into the
coast and the normal problematic areas like Waveland and extreme
southeast St Tammany along with the Venetian Isles area will
likely see impacts, with minor impacts starting today. With that
we have issued a Coastal Flood Adv through Tuesday but this will
likely be extended in time and possibly area as well. Tides today
will likely range around 1 to just under 1.5 feet abv normal (or
about 1- 1.5 Mow at SHBL1 and WYCM6).
Now for the less confident stuff. Actually there is really not much
change to the overall pattern forecast but some of the micro to
mesoscale features are different. Very subtle features will make or
break this forecast. Some of the CAMs and HREF guidance are in
complete odds with the Global models however even the GFS and ECMWF
have trended wetter but there is some definite placement issues of
the heaviest precip with the op models. That said the GEFS and
ECS both indicate higher QPF totals over the eastern half of the
CWA. The CMC which was the wetter ensemble yesterday is now the
driest. The 6z NBM guidance is very much in agreement with the
HREF along with WPC which hits a small area of SELA with some
heavy rain in the next 36-48 hrs. Some of the CAMs runs appear to
be a little overzealous with the QPF amounts and right now I still
have a hard time believing those however, they all are converging
on a general area with the risk of heavy rain and all seem to
suggest more so tonight and into Tuesday morning.
So quickly the pattern, the s/w ridging we had yesterday is sliding
east while a s/w trough is slowly nudging into the area. The trough
axis extends north along the KS/MO border. This does appear to be a
little deeper than anticipated the last few days and because of that
it will likely suppress the departing ridge a little more and nudge
it just a touch farther east. Second there now appears to be a
secondary impulse, which I had not seen the last few days, currently
moving into north-central TX. This is quite evident on all 3
channels of the WV. This will in a way reinforce the trough over the
region late today and tonight along with postponing the ridge
building back into the region for about 24 hours. The ridge will
become quite stout over the southeastern CONUS Tuesday night and
Wednesday and as it slides west will absolutely shut down rain
production but until that happens we will see convection. At the sfc
no real changes, high pressure has already moved east and moderate
onshore flow has commenced with periods of stronger onshore expected
over the next couple of days.
Currently there is some rather decent convection with very efficient
rain production along the upper TX coast yesterday evening and now
along the Sabine river and in the northwestern GOM. This activity is
moving very slow east and even backbuilding some, especially the
storm in the Gulf. Estimated rainfall totals are already in the 3-6
inches range with the storms along the Sabine however the storm in
the Gulf may have already dropped more than 8 while the storms along
the TX coast yesterday may have dropped more than 10 inches! That is
efficient and shows the potential of what could occur if this
activity can move into the area.
One noticeable change from previous days is the forecast for PWs.
CRP and BRO measured 1.87 and 1.84 respectively which I believe is a
little higher than forecast. Currently looking at GOES 16 PW
estimate the western half of the Gulf is abv 1.5" with much of the
western Gulf aoa 1.7" Obviously cloud cover where it is currently
raining and south of the LA coast is not allowing GOES to give a PW
estimate but just on the edge it was around 1.7-1.8. 06Z GFS appears
to have initialized a little low with the PWs and if the HRRR is
some of the other CAMs are right we could see PWs around or even
greater than 2" move into the area late today and overnight. This is
well abv what was indicated the last few days easily in the top 10th
percentile.
The other change appears to be the LL moisture. Previous guidance
suggested rather dry LL air that across the easter half of the CWA.
Now with H85 theta e values of around 330-335K (not extreme but good
enough now) are expected to pump into the region. Previous days the
eastern half of the CWA was looking like 310-320 which is extremely
low.
A few other features the next few days, upper level divergence,
still not overly impressive. At h250 and h3 the jet will be north of
the CWA and departing and this should at least provide some
divergence but not like what was in place last week. Instability, we
will be unstable with showalters values of around -2, MLCAPE of 500-
1500 this afternoon and through Tuesday night. LL winds will
increase some tonight but h85 winds of 35 to maybe 30kts isn't a
really strong LL jet. In addition there isn't any real indication of
strong LL convergence but this slightly more than subtle increase
will be accompanied by an increase in LL moisture this evening and
tonight. This looks to setup from near the mouth of the MS to the NW
of BR. It is that locations that may be where a band of showers and
thunderstorms develop tonight. With the amount of deep moisture in
place, instability to work with, and even subtle upper level support
there appears to be an increasing risk for locally heavy rain across
portions of the area, likely the southeastern half of the CWA.
However this is the first swing this direction by the models. The
trend had been to a drier forecast so there is a lot of questions
and low confidence in this forecast. Because of that we will hold
off on a Flash Flood Watch for now especially since we should still
have at least 12-18 hours before the greatest concern begins. This
will allow the day shift to reevaluate the situation and get a watch
out before the afternoon news and still likely ahead of any real
impacts. /CAB/
LONG TERM (Thursday through Sunday)...
The general pattern will feature a large, deep layer high pressure
area that will be centered over much of the eastern U.S. on
Thursday, and a shortwave trough that will likely have a cutoff low
near the south Texas coast. The influx if higher moisture content in
the atmosphere that will have occurred earlier in the week may or
may not remain over western to southern portions of the forecast
area, but regardless there should remain a chance of diurnally
driven showers and thunderstorms. Friday into Saturday...the deep
layer high pressure to the east will likely retrograde southwest and
become centered just east of the forecast area over the southeast
U.S. and northeast to north central Gulf of Mexico and central Gulf
coast region. This would suppress the rainfall even more to the west
and bring higher temperatures to the region. There are still model
timing differences on how fast the high completely dries things out
with the operational runs of the GFS now more aggressive from Friday
onward while the ECMWF keeps a bit more rain around over
western/southern portions of the forecast area through Saturday
before drying out on Sunday. Have stayed fairly close to the NBM due
to uncertainty, but bumped up the high temperatures a bit over the
weekend. 22/TD
AVIATION...12z TAF Package...VFR conditions continue for now but
look for low cigs to start to impact terminals later this morning.
There are already a bunch of low clouds but they are still abv 3500
ft for now. In addition very light shra are moving in from the west.
This activity will continue through the morning with a good chance
of heavier shra and even tsra impacting terminals along and west of
a line from MCB to NEW. Most terminals will likely continue to see
low cigs, convection, and reduced vsbys through tonight. The few
exceptions could be ASD and especially GPT as the rain may remain
just off to the west. /CAB/
MARINE...The pressure gradient remains tight and winds have been up
all night. There is no indication that they will lighten up for at
least the next 48 to possibly even 96 hrs. Because of that we have
issued a Small craft advisory for all of the open waters along with
Breton and Chandeluer Sounds. Winds at many of the platforms are
already around 20kts with higher gusts and this will continue. These
