.AVIATION...
VFR conditions will generally prevail through the period. Isolated
showers and thunderstorms could affect a few of the terminals this
afternoon, but probability of a storm moving over any individual
site is fairly low, so have included VCTS during the most likely
timing and will have to handle any direct impacts with short-term
amendments. Outside of any thunderstorm impacts, winds will
generally be light. A couple hours of lower visibility due to fog
will be possible at KMCB around daybreak Thursday. Another day of
generally VFR conditions with scattered showers and storms is on
tap for Thursday.

.PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 332 AM CDT Wed Jul 28 2021/

SHORT TERM (Today through Friday) Heat advisory will remain today
and since heat build up in the body is cumulative, longer breaks and
less exposure may be necessary during the hottest part of the day.
The main hope for cooling will be thunderstorm development but this
may develop later in the day. PW values move up today from the 1.5"
to around 2.2" by mid to late afternoon which will provide the depth
of moisture necessary for the higher precip numbers. Rain rates
could be high is some of this activity today with 2 to 4 inch per
hour rates possible. Accompanying this will be vectors for storm
motion and propagation being 180 from each other causing these
storms to rain out in areas they develop over which could take an
hour or two. The next thing will be strong downburst winds and
even though the risk of severe wx is low one or two isolated
severe thunderstorms with damaging straight line winds could
develop today as there will be some mid level dry air in place
helping boost wet microburst numbers. Precip numbers have been
kept elevated a bit as we go into the evening hours as some of
this activity should linger into the "after-dark" hours. PW values
should remain around 2.0 to 2.2" through Thursday which should
get sh/ts activity started a bit earlier by Thursday providing
some cloud cover for some areas and could alter heat index values
just a bit. But we will have to see if this continues to look to
be the case. PW values drop back into the 1.7" area by Friday
which will bring the strong insolation back and the heat will be
back again but there is a hint of lake and cbrz boundaries
becoming a bit more of a focus for thunderstorms.

LONG TERM (Saturday through Tuesday)...
Upper level ridge will continue to remain in place over the Plains
and Rockies over the weekend. Meanwhile a deepening longwave trough
is beginning to unfold over the northeast Atlantic states. As for
our area...we will ride on the eastern side of the western ridge
bringing subsidence thus another hot weekend ahead. Convection
could fire along the western side of the trough over the weekend.
The best chances for showers and thunderstorms would be in the far
eastern zones including the Mississippi coast and any development
would be late afternoon and continue into the evening hours along
the northerly upper stream flow on the right side of the upper
ridge. Heat indexes will continue to top over 105 through the
weekend until the ridge finally breaks down early next week. Pattern
change likely by Monday as the eastern conus longwave trough expands
and digs westward on Monday. The trough will bring a backdoor cold
front down from the northeast on Monday and Tuesday. POPS will
increase above 70 percent as a result especially by Tuesday.
Unsettled pattern with temperatures returning to near average for
Monday and Tuesday.

MARINE...

Typical Summer like conditions over the northern gulf waters. Winds
will be light causing quite miserable conditions. Thunderstorms will
be a little harder to come by until Thursday and maybe Friday as PW
values increase causing convective temps to drop toward water temps
which also causes a more diurnal effect in sh/ts distribution. This
is very normal for this time of year and brings with it our
nocturnal thunderstorms with highest numbers and percentages
during the hours around sunrise.
