Area Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM (Tonight through Tuesday Night)...A surge of drier
mid-level air will advect into the southern and eastern portions
of the forecast area tonight into tomorrow as a region of
increased subsidence aloft pushes in from the east. This area of
negative vorticity will be associated with a very weak region of
increased heights aloft between a departing vort lobe moving into
Texas and a weak inverted trough axis moving into the eastern Gulf
from Florida. As a result, a fairly sharp moisture gradient will
be in place with higher precipitable water values of around 2.1
inches along the Atchafalaya Basin and into Southwest Mississippi,
and lower precipitable water values around 1.5 inches along the
Louisiana and Mississippi coasts. POP values reflect this moisture
gradient with likely coverage in the north and west of the CWA and
slight chance coverage along the coasts. Temperatures will remain
fairly warm and a heat advisory has been reissued for much of the
area tomorrow. It does look like the highest heat index values
should occur in the late morning and early afternoon before
thunderstorm activity begins to cool down conditions in the mid to
late afternoon hours.

The subsidence aloft should weaken a bit by Tuesday, and a return
to precipitable water values over the region that are in line with
climatological averages of 2 inches is expected. Overall POP
values will be close to climatology as well ranging from 30 to 50
percent. As is the case on Monday, the convection will be largely
driven by daytime heating with convective activity peaking in the
afternoon hours and waning by late evening. Although highs should
warm back into the lower 90s, slightly drier air and slightly
lower dewpoints should keep heat index values in the more normal
for this time of year range of 100 to 105.

.LONG TERM (Wednesday through Saturday)...A deepening trough axis
across the eastern seaboard will drive a weak backdoor front into
the area from the north and east on Wednesday. This weak boundary
is expected to stall along the coast on Thursday and Friday before
completely dissipating on Saturday. A prevailing northerly flow
pattern will dominate in the mid and upper levels as the area is
sandwiched between a strong ridge to the northwest and the trough
axis to the east. This weak boundary will serve as a focal point
for convective development each day, and moisture pooling along
the boundary should also push precipitable water values up into
the 2.25 to 2.5 inch range. As a result, higher convective chances
are expected each day from Wednesday through Friday with likely
POP of around 70 percent forecast over most of the region. The
convection will remain largely diurnal with POP peaking in the
afternoon hours. Temperatures should be near average each day with
highs in the lower 90s and lows in the 70s. Fortunately, the
increased convective activity in the afternoon hours should limit
heat impacts as convective outflows temporarily reduce heat index
values.

The boundary should completely dissipate by Saturday as the strong
ridge axis to the northwest expands eastward to encompass much of
the Gulf South. Increased subsidence aloft will push some drier
air into the region and precipitable water values will decline
back to more average levels for late July. Although, some weak
capping is expected in the mid-levels, the convective temperature
should be reached each day and expect to see scattered convection
fire up in the late morning and early afternoon hours. Overall POP
is expected to be in the 30 to 50 percent range with in line with
climatology. The increase in dry mid-level air could support some
stronger wind gusts with any deeper convection that develops on
Saturday. This is supported by DCAPE values of around 1000J/KG
Saturday afternoon.

.AVIATION...The 00z TAF package will likely indicate prevailing
VFR conditions through around 18z tomorrow. After 18z, some VCTS
wording may be added at KBTR, KHDC, and KMCB where thunderstorm
development is more likely tomorrow afternoon. Lower thunderstorm
chances are expected at the remaining terminals during the
afternoon hours tomorrow.

.MARINE...A very typical Summer pattern is expected across the
coastal waters through the end of the week even as a weak boundary
stalls just north of the waters by mid-week. This pattern will see
the wind field remain light at 10 knots or less and seas remain
fairly calm at 2 feet or less through the period. Wind direction
will be dominated by the seabreeze/landbreeze cycle with light
offshore flow in the morning turning into a light onshore flow by
the afternoon hours. Thunderstorm development will be possible
each day with a threat of gusty winds and waterspouts.
Thunderstorms will be most common in the early morning hours over
the Gulf waters.

...AN AREA OF STRONG THUNDERSTORMS WILL AFFECT EAST CENTRAL JEFFERSON
AND WEST CENTRAL PLAQUEMINES PARISHES...

At 1053 AM CDT, strong thunderstorms were clustered 9 miles southwest
of Port Sulphur. The storm is nearly stationary.

Winds in excess of 30 mph are possible with this storm.

Locations impacted include...
Port Sulphur.

Conditions in the atmosphere are such that weak, brief funnels may
form with these storms. These funnels are usually harmless, but on
rare occasions can briefly touch down and cause wind gusts over 50
mph. If a funnel approaches your location, move indoors.

Torrential rainfall is also occurring with this storm, and may cause

At 1139 AM CDT, strong thunderstorms were clustered near Larose. The
storm is nearly stationary.

Winds in excess of 30 mph are possible with this storm.

Locations impacted include...
Larose, Cut Off, Galliano, Lockport, Mathews, Lafitte and Raceland.

Conditions in the atmosphere are such that weak, brief funnels may
form with these storms. These funnels are usually harmless, but on
rare occasions can briefly touch down and cause wind gusts over 50
mph. If a funnel approaches your location, move indoors.

Torrential rainfall is also occurring with this storm, and may cause
localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded
roadways.

Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm.

At 1206 PM CDT, a strong thunderstorm was located 7 miles north of
Pointe A La Hache, or 13 miles northwest of Port Sulphur, moving
northwest at 10 mph.

Winds in excess of 30 mph are possible with this storm.

Locations impacted include...
Jean Lafitte, Myrtle Grove, Lafitte and Barataria.

Conditions in the atmosphere are such that weak, brief funnels may
