Aside from the potential for LIFR stratus/fog in the Pine Belt
region, we should see VFR conditions prevail for the most part
through Saturday morning. Expect SHRA/TSRA to develop this
afternoon and spread quickly northwest in the deep ESE flow. Any
sub VFR conditions will be brief in association with the
convective precipitation. /EC/

.DISCUSSION...
Showers across the area are fading and temperatures tonight are
falling roughly in line with the previous forecast's diurnal
expectation. Only minor edits to the grids to better match
observations were made with overnight lows falling into the lower
to mid 70s tonight. /86/

Tonight and tomorrow:

Afternoon showers and isolated thunderstorms continue to affect the
region today. These will bring some locally heavy downpours and
gusty winds briefly for some locations before diminishing later this
evening. Another muggy night is in store for the region with
overnight lows in the 70s. All eyes will continue to be on Hurricane
Ida as it will enter the Gulf of Mexico later tonight into tomorrow
with rapid intensification occurring this weekend. However, tomorrow
will be a great day for residents to do some hurricane preparedness
before the storm hits Sunday night into early next week.
Temperatures will rise into the low 90s across the area tomorrow
with heat indices reaching around 100 to 105 degrees across western
portions of the forecast area. Will not go with a limited heat risk
for tomorrow given the plethora of tropical threats upcoming, but
residents should be aware that if they are performing any outdoor
activities, that heat stress remains somewhat of a concern.
Additionally, convection in the warm, moist airmass in place will
have a greater coverage once again tomorrow. The main concern for
the long term will be the track and impacts from Hurricane Ida,
which will be detailed below. /28/

Sunday through Friday:

Hurricane Ida continues to rapidly intensify today, and the main
concern for our forecast area through early next week will be
Hurricane Ida's impacts in our region. The consensus of
deterministic and ensemble model guidance has informed
the latest track and intensity guidance from the National Hurricane
Center. As the storm moves across the central Gulf of Mexico this
weekend, it will encounter a favorable environment for continued
growth and intensification. An area of water with high ocean heat
content, associated with the Gulf Loop Current, extends from Cuba
into the central Gulf. Also, upper-level wind patterns over the Gulf
of Mexico will reduce wind shear across the storm during that phase.
Given these factors, the National Hurricane Center forecasts
Hurricane Ida to reach Major Hurricane strength before
landfall along the Central Gulf Coast sometime Sunday afternoon or
Sunday night. After landfall, Ida is expected to push inland through
southern Louisiana and southern Mississippi while gradually
weakening. The earliest impacts in our forecast area may be felt as
early as Sunday evening, but most impacts will occur Sunday night
through Monday night as Ida curves northeast across the state of
Mississippi. Some impacts will linger into the day on Tuesday,
especially across northeastern Mississippi where Ida's weakening
circulation is expected to cross.

Hurricanes are complex storm systems, with threats for
wind, flooding rain, and tornadoes. Hurricane Ida will be no
different. Heavy rainfall with outer bands and especially the core
circulation of Ida is expected to add up into the 5-10 range along
the main axis in our area. Locally higher amounts could be possible
depending on forward speed and any banding. With a Major Hurricane
forecast at landfall, the chances for tropical storm to hurricane
fore winds have continued to trend upwards for portions of our
forecast area. A Tropical Storm Watch has been added for portions of
central and northeast Louisiana, as well as portions of southern and
central Mississippi where we have the highest confidence in
Tropical Storm force winds through the daylight hours on Monday.
Further expansion and possible upgrades to this Watch may be needed
with future forecast updates and as the Hurricane approaches. Local
residents and travelers in the region should be prepared for
possible power outages and prepare personal property for high winds.
Lastly, a Marginal Risk for tornadoes has been added for much of our
forecast area due to increased wind shear surrounding the
circulation of Ida. This risk may be further refined with future
updates as well. All local hazard products have been updated.

In Hurricane Ida's wake, more mundane (and less rainy) weather will
round out the work week. /NF/

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Saturday night through Thursday

Hurricane Ida is forecast to track northwest toward the central
Gulf Coast through this weekend and make landfall sometime Sunday
afternoon or Sunday night along the Coast. Based on the latest
forecast from the National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Ida will
likely bring high winds, heavy rainfall, and possible tornadoes
to the outlook area from Sunday Night through Tuesday. Power
outages and downed trees can be expected across portions of the
area, especially over central and northeast Louisiana as well as
portions of southern and central Mississippi. Areas of flash
flooding will also be possible due to heavy rain falling with
Hurricane Ida. Tornadoes will be possible Sunday night through
Monday night as the hurricane moves through the area.
